EA81T Wagon Woes (Pics added 4/19/05)

Do you have a pic of your hose and where is went bad? -
S'ko, could you get a larger version of that pic, and Soobmater, can you do the same for your avitar?
-
They only made the EA81T for two years, so if what you're saying is correct (That not all the turbos had the oil cooler) then it must be safe to assume that it was installed as part of the turbo upgrade (When they had a recall to install the water cooled turbos). Sound feasable? What other differences can you think of? The only other difference I can think of is that the gear ratios in the auto tranny are different from all the other non-turbo automatics. By the way, TheMixToo what year is your brat? And does your rear bumper have gold trim like the front one?

EA81T Wagon Woes (Pics added 4/19/05)

Well, the trip up to Bellingham went fine, but when I pulled off to drop my friend off, I smelled coolant. I figured it would be fine. Well the next day I had to drive about 20 blocks to the grocery store. Long story short, there is steam coming from the turbo area, but I still have all the heat sheilds and spare tire in there, no tools, no place to work, and nothing to carry water in. Hopefully my friends uncle who owns a shop will look at it for free and tell me what I need to fix. I just don't have the time to fix my car up here. GRrrrrrr!!! -
I love the little touches on the turbos. Like the lower, stiffer suspension!

Are you sure? NM, just thought about it and you're right. -
No, it won't fit very well, if at all.

Yes, the starter is mounted on the tranny facing the engine.

Oh, I've done axles before, and in WAY less than 45 minutes. I just feel like whining. You wouldn't happen to have any spare auto axles would you? -
Well after having a lot of trouble with my waterpump and finding a suitable replacement (Thanks Shawn!), my wagon needs more work. The boot on my passenger side front axle ripped open for some reason and spewed grease all over the turbo and underside of the car. I'd rather replace the whole thing than mess with a potentially bad axle. And it was behaving so well recently...

Tizzle, I saw you getting off the freeway in Mt Vernon on Friday! I was freaking out trying to figure out whos RX that was!

It will be weaker. Don't ask by how much, I don't want to look it up and calculate it. I would look into the price of a custom bent bar.

The Enkei wheels on my car weigh 8lbs a peice, how much do the Premeirs weigh?
-
I've got that box checked too! Its actually a pretty easy conversion. Really stright forward.

Thats a coupe, not a sedan. The coupes only got the turbo engine in '84. Digi-dashes only came with the Turbo-10 package. They (Digi-dashes) often go TU and can be tough to find replacements for, especially the turbo ones. Thankfully my dash is still kicken!

Its not factory. It was a dealer option that some dealer in the south west did. They are pretty rare, but only worth what you'd pay for it.

We've done a bunch of work on hybrid cars at Western and the good batterys (The ones out of the Prius) are very, VERY expensive! I say go for it. Just remember that you will drain the batteries a lot faster if you offroad with the car.

Brakes on EA81T engined Sub?
carfreak85 replied to Tee Koo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The turbos were all automatics. IIRC, any EA81 that was an auto should have ventilated rotors. The Front rotors are almost 9" in diameter as are the rear drums. Pretty small... Ea82 are over 9". -
Deadbolt Enterprises Port/Polish Turbo inside
carfreak85 replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Will, what would that job cost an average person? -
I know that some of the wheels that were originally designed for a Gen 1 car will not fit over the vented front rotors of some EA81s or any EA82s. I have not tested this, so I cannot give you an answer with 100% confidance. Again, this does not hold true for all Gen 1 wheels.

The EA81 automatic axles will only fit on the stubs from a non-turbo EA82 tranny. I also suggest getting a 1 peice driveshaft made. I also had to grind a little tab off the tranny so it wouldn't tap the tranny tunnel. If you can, drill the welds off of the 4WD shifter mount inside the car on the donor EA81 and bolt or weld it into your car. I used a glob of JB Weld with two screws through the trans tunnel that are submerged in the crap and while it is holding just fine, if I did it again, I'd use the stock mount. There is some wiring that needs to be done as well. Get in touch with me and I can help you out with that.

Lets see if we can't scrounge up a flow map for this puppy.
