front wheel knocking and grinding
carfreak85 replied to czaray's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Like this one? I'm not finding ton of options outside of SKF. Have looked on Amazon, Grainger, McMaster-Carr, etc. Nobody has a great description. (Spoon feed me, please, oh Mighty General of Disorder ) -
front wheel knocking and grinding

@GeneralDisorder Do you have a particular brand or model of 7207 that you prefer? Looks like there are 1,000,001+ options out there, just not sure what features/specs are must-haves, nice-to-haves, etc. -
So my rear defrost wasn’t working.

You can probably disassemble that switch and clean up the contacts. I think you can still get them on RockAuto... -

Have you checked that the fuel return line to the tank blows clear? -

Alright, good to know. I was going to run the Mobil 1 Mobilith SHC 220 I had leftover from doing my WRX wheel bearings (The Mobilith is safe for nylon bearing cages). Is there a reason you prefer the Amsoil waterproof grease over their other grease applications? -
'87 RX - No Gauge Illumination?

I may have slapped and tapped, but not enough to remember. I think I'll pull the binnacle off today to check that the dimmer switch is indeed plugged in. Yes, dimmer is the thumbwheel-style switch. -

The dimmer switch setting does nothing. I'll have to double check that it's plugged in, but I'm pretty sure it is. -

Test that pressure regulator, sounds like you're dumping fuel into the engine. -

@GeneralDisorder You still stand by this recommendation, or have things changed in the last 9 years? Are the 7207's worth the extra effort, or are the 6207-2RS-C3's the way to go? I'm a little concerned that the grease in the C3's might not be as robust as the stuff I already have used for my WRX wheel bearings. -
First time driving the new RX in the dark and surprise, surprise, the gauges don't light up! Anyone have any idea why my gauge cluster would be totally dark? The gauges still work and the telltales light up for things like low range, but there is zero back lighting in the gauge cluster with the parking lamps or headlamps on. I'm not near the car at the moment, but do these lamps share a fuse with something else? Run on their own fuse? I did a search and came up with lots of results for swapping in LED bulbs. The cluster has never been removed on my watch but I did just repair the HVAC module mounts on the gauge binnacle and didn't notice any signs of suspicious activity.

These little VFs seem to hold up pretty well, I would be surprised if the seals are blown out on this car in particular. I would first look for any vacuum leaks. Inspect all the rubber hoses, hose clamps, etc. Make sure the inlet pipe from the airbox to the turbo isn't severely cracked (it was rubber once, now more like brittle plastic). Put a long screwdriver on each injector and put your ear on the other end, making sure you hear each one clicking. I forgot to take photos of the troubleshooting tree, but I'm making a note to do it today. -

Have you found the turbo supplement yet? I can try to take some photos of the troubleshooting section this evening, if I remember. -
I didn't know you sold the turbo coupe...

90 whp out of an EA81 is still pretty damn good! If a big valve made 84 chp and you figure in driveline losses a stock EA81 is putting out 63-71 whp. Given the breathing issues these engines have I'd say you're doing well, with some room still to grow that output!

Ea81 transmission swap into a Ea82

Fixed it for you... -
I don't know how your vehicle inspectors could have an issue with simply replicating the exact same style anti-roll bar mounts that Subaru themselves used. It's literally square tubing with a slot cut and hole drilled with a captive nut welded behind the hole...
-
I would just copy the EA82-style mounts. Basically, cut square stock in half, make a slot for the mounting clamp's tab, drill a hole and weld a captive nut inside, then weld that assembly to the semi-trailing arm. Wish I had a photo to share...

Make a note to your self to check back in with us in ~30k miles to let us know if there is any oil consumption from doing it "your way." -
Yes, I've done it.

Keep an eye out for the supplement on eBay, I've seen a few pop up here and there in the recent past. -
The frames and seatback upholstery are LH and RH specific, the cushions and seat-bottom upholstery are not.

I've swapped passenger side foam and upholstery to the driver's side on several cars now and it's a great way to freshen an old driver's seat. I tend to snip the hog rings, recycle them and replace them with small zip-ties to make installation simpler. If you have a nice, spare passenger's seat there is no reason not to give it a try!
