EA81 power steering column shaft
carfreak85 replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It should, as I've read, but I can't confirm it myself. I've got the parts to do it though. -
Pulled the Gates pulley, replaced with OEM. I'll see if I can return the Gates. Now after I get the engine back in the car and try bolting up the torque converter, we discover that I've got a cam 180* out of phase, so it all comes back apart. Oh joy... Otherwise things are going back together pretty well, though going on a two week vacation in the middle of the repair ratchets up the difficulty.

Well, that really sucks to read, but its too F**KING late for this engine, TB covers are back on and the pulley has been paid for and installed... Maybe when the TB is due for replacement we'll switch back to OEM.

OK, great progress this weekend! Got the seals replaced, heads torqued on (with zero bolt creaking!). I did notice late on Saturday that my dealership parts guy forgot to include the toothed timing belt idler pulley, so had to go with a Gates Chinese pulley from NAPA on that one. Now I just need to do some cleanup around the engine bay and drop the engine back in!

EA81 power steering column shaft
carfreak85 replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My EA81T with power steering has a rubber rag joint in the steering shaft. The EA82 w/ PS uses a u-joint instead of a rag joint. -

The rear diff bushing kits from Whiteline and TiC both have unused urethane washers that I've burgled for my EA rear diff mounts. Photos to come. -
Modified turbo exhaust pic
carfreak85 replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wonder if one engine is more worn out than the other, as I wouldn't expect an exhaust header (and a fairly stock looking one at that) to require a double down shift to climb a hill. More likely you're looking at a cracked pipe that a previous owner tried to repair... -
Very cool! Where did you pick this one up?

I've got a couple hours to mull over my course of action before I'll be in front of the heads again. Will probably throw some gorilla tape on the cam for protection, just to hedge my bets on my ham-fists slipping... That said, what does GD recommend for scratched cam snouts? Emory cloth it smooth? Any fillers, or just get it flat and pray?

I'll give the screw driver a try, but there doesn't seem to be any good way to hook the seal with the camshaft snout poking out as far as it does. Ideally I'd be prying straight across the seal's surface, but with the cam in the way, I'd have to have the screwdriver almost 45 degrees from the seal's centerline, a real recipe for damage...

CAMSHAFT SEALS!!! I hate these things... It's as if they're baked into the heads and that camshaft poking over an inch up out of the center of the seal is a real pain in the butt. I need to find the spare hook that came with the Lisle tool because I bent the original one and scored the cam snout a bit right under the lip of the seal. FAAK!

Modified turbo exhaust pic
carfreak85 replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not sure what you're trying to communicate, but my EA-turbos love having larger exhausts and manifolds. They lose some low end oomf, but they're happier at almost every RPM. -
Just wondering what happened to these people?
carfreak85 replied to Subasaurus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nope, this guy was in eastern Oregon, IIRC. Will, WJM was from GA. -
EA81 oil pump removal pics
carfreak85 replied to StallonePanerai's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've got three EA81T parts engines to rob for oil pumps if/when I need them. Although the turbo may have had a greater impact on their lives vs. a carb'd EA81 oil pump. -

I have a parts catalog for EA81s and EA82s, if you know what you need a P/N for. -
