EA81T performance page.
carfreak85 replied to Jerry DeMoss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is the wrong thread for that question. Please start a new thread in this forum or the retrofitting forum. This is a thread about factory turbocharged EA81s. Sorry if that came off rudly. -

I'm interested in what other owners think about ceramic coatings. Specifically for the combustion chamber. I know that one of the heads on my engine has a crack ala EA82T, but the subie specific repair shop said it wasn't anything to worry about. I know Swain has a coating that doesn't seem too expensive. Does anyone have any opinions on this? -

I agree that the EA81T is an under-loved power plant. Hell, it was only avalible in a very limited number of markets for perhaps the better part of two years. Sort of a Subaru performance anomaly like the SVX or GC 2.5RS. On a side note, the crossover pipe flange is identical between the EA81 and EA82 turbos except where they .bolt to the head. Downpipes are identical. Legacy turbos (VF-11) have WRX style flanges. EA81T crossover pipe houses the O2 sensor while the EA82T O2 sensor is in the downpipe. Seems as though I'm being left behind in the battle of beefy internals. All I have done so far to the engine are bolt ons: Cut bottom of the intake box + K&N panel filter SS manderal bent header 1.5" primaries, 1.75" uppie 3" DP 2.5" exhaust with Flowmaster muffler I have been stocking parts for various engine related projects that will be added shortly such as an intercooler, EBC, turbo timer, uprated turbo and RRFPR. Just need to get some additional gauges and support hardware for these mods to go on. Once I start with my turbo coupe project, I will have a spare engine to pull apart and build up. Currently I'm finishing the clear coat on a WRX hood scoop and splitter. WOW, thats some nice hardware!! How did that affect your wallet? Not trying to be rude, but I have another source for valve springs, etc. and just want to be able to compare prices. I'm also not convinced that porting is a worthwhile mod for these engines. While I am sure it would help some on a N/A engine, these little guys are not flowing enough for ports and TBs to be a restriction. Plus they are turbocharged, so much of the port work would be negated simply by having positive manifold pressure. But I'm still interested in learning more about these mods for future application. The spare tire support is non-structural, but does have a heat sheild for the turbo. That sensor is your ambient air temp sensor. HOOK IT BACK UP! -
Hawk makes pads for ea81 cars
carfreak85 replied to Jerry DeMoss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My set just came in too. Unfortunatly I'm having trouble finding quality OEM replacement rotors to go with the new pads. I should have them on once I find a suitable set of discs. Any suggestions? -

Opinions on High Quality Brake Rotors: EA81
carfreak85 replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nothing really, I just want the highest quality replacement rotors that I can find. I know we can get Brembos for the solid rotor crowd, but is there some super secret part number for the vented discs? The problem with my current ones are big fat grooves caused by a loose axle nut and rust scale that looks ugly... Plus I don't want to bed in my new Hawk HPS pads on those rotors, however old they might be. Does anyone have a prefered brand of rotors similar in quality to Brembo? In this case I'm not looking for the least expensive option, I WANT to spend money on my brakes. Anyone have the hook up on Motul RBF600 brake fluid? -
November 11th in Bremerton. Hope to see another board member out there. I don't care who you are or what you bring, and I don't bite!! We need more of this on this board!!! http://www.pnwr.org/calendar07/display.asp?EventID=1423&CalendarID=4&StyleID=2&thisMonth=11&thisDay=11&thisYear=2007&Window=Same

I saw an 08 OBS the other day and I wouldn't call that quirky, I'd call it Fugly. Now the bugeye WRXs, those are quirky looking beasts. The only car I can think of that it looks like is a European Carolla hatchback. I think we can all agree that since at least the Gen 1s, people have complained that most new 'rus were not the best to look at. As time passed however people's opinions have not changed, the weird subaru people have just come out of the wood work and started loving these old ugly cars. I like my EA81 Turbo wagon because in most places I go my car looks like nothing else (Except in Bellingham, which I'm convinced is the EA81 capitol of the world). It is also better engineered than many cars of similar vintage.

tire question on EA stock wheels.
carfreak85 replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah. That 215 tire is 8+ inches wide and unless you found some old enkeis or some other wheel that was the same 5.5" width, you still would be hard pressed to fit them on there. You would need wheels about 6.5-7.5" wide wheels for those tire sizes. -
The problem there is that they took a platform that was already a front heavy , understeering design and gave it an even grippier rear suspension. Now, what happens when you shift the chassis grip further rearward? Oh, right... MORE UNDERSTEER. Come on Subaru, put struts in the rear and give the front a double wishbone front suspension like it deserves. Edit: Just saw those STi pics. Hmmm, now I do LOVE our '07 STi, but there are things I don't like about it. The STi should be a "stripped down" version of the WRX, read: NO GPS, NO NO NO push button starter, NO god**** quad exhaust (it all goes through ONE turbo for god's sake). It looks sick, minus the clear tail lights, and if it performs as well as I hope it does, then I'm taking out a loan and buying one when it is released here, insurance costs be damned! If you couldn't tell I'm very opinionated about this. I fell in love with subarus long before the GD impreza came out and they seemed to be getting better and better. First, standard AWD in '96, 2.5RS in '98 (thats kinda what started my obsession), WRX in '02 (pitched a tent when that came out and now Mom has one), STI in '04 (Dad finally got one of those!). But now, with the WRX they fell off the wagon... But again I really like that new STi.

Was this advertised on this board? -
The EA82 carby manifold is, the factory EA82 carb isn't. More emissions garbage. Yes. Yes! Search for Delta Camshaft, they have several grinds for the EA81 these days. The SPFI EA82 pistons have 9.5:1 compression and a slightly better design from what I'm told. The EA71 pistons are only 9.0:1. After a certain point yes. I think you can get away with some VERY minor decking, but then the intake manifold will not line up. NO!!! :Flame:SMALL VALVE HEADS!!! The intake passages are already poorly designed, why make it worse? If you can get this little engine to spin fast enough, then yes. Otherwise, why would you want to adjust your valves? The engines with the larger valves were rated at 73HP @ 4800rpm and 94LB/FT @ 2400rpm. Ever thought about an EA81T?

Prepping the EA81T for a road trip
carfreak85 replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Make sure the radiator is free of debris and that the driver has plenty of snacks. -
Why the hell didn't you run a car?!!?

Tim, any progress on the coupe lately? Also, has anyone actually put the FT4WD tranny in an EA81 yet? I'd like to get to that soon, but I've never read anything about putting that specific tranny in a gen 2.

The results are up. Check them out under "Restults" then "Sports Car Spectacular". Karl and I did pretty well with a stock STi.
