  1. Get an early Impreza or Legacy and swap 99 Legacy Outback struts onto it and get some 215/70/15 tires Done. Don't mess with an older gen Loyale/GL car unless you are gonna fully 4 wheel it. If you wanna go fast on gravel the Impreza/Legacy chassis is WAAAY better.

    MIG for tacking/detail stuff and small welds. Preheated with Oxy/Act.....and then Finished with the Arc welder for that fo-sho penetration. Sticks are way cheaper than spools and gas for the MIG.
  3. EJ18s are great in the EA cars. The harness in the first gen impreza is super easy strip down too. By far the easiest harness cutdown because everything comes out as one harness no big SMJ joint and Ig. relay on the opposite side from ECU etc.like legacy.
  4. That box with the brake lines is ABS not Traction control. Traction control was not offered on any USDM models that I'm aware of. Not sure why there would be bulbs in there......sure it wasn't empty holders?

    Some of them. Some suby axles are a tad smaller splined section, but the large EA81 shafts and early EJ shafts are the same. Gonna try and make some stubby suby axles???

    Got bit more done today. Not too much....snout of front diff nearly mounted. Cutdown Legacy rear mount...welded along the bottom and inner edge and plug welded from back side. EA82 Manual steering rack not gonna work.....check out that toe.....gonna need EA81 or maybe use the shorter trooper inner tierods if they interchange......everything else has so far....... Including this.....Hybridized Trooper/EA81 outer joint and axle (inner joint coming soon....96+ rear inner male spine) Midshaft of the stubby trooper axle shown beside.
  7. OEM is best. SPFI longblock will bolt right in. The heads won't have the ports for the AAV systtem (stainless pipes) so you'll have to ditch that system. Plug the big tube at the EGR but the EGR itself can stay or use an SPFI one. Mizpah lifters will go right in. Valves are self adjusting. There is no adjustment. Mixing heads is fine, just make sure to use a Right and Left (passenger side has EGR pipe port on top) If the heads have BTV cracks it's ok as long as they are minor.
  8. The most important thing with those for PCV operation is to clear out the gunk from the baffles in the valve covers, and to a lesser extent the baffle plate and the vent at the rear of the engine. Keep all the hose ends clamped. Make sure you get the correct PCV for a turbo as well.

    EA82 with longtravel coilovers. 96+ Legacy female input diff (welded) and inner axle cups and Six lug conversion to match the front. I'm gonna build that all on it's own subframe then merge the 2 pieces to set the wheel base where I want it. Body will be a surprise. Gotta save something to post once it's done.

    Trying to keep it all independent and Subaru drivetrain. The entire driveline will be sheilded and I should have 16+" at the diffs with 33"s It should work out well, the Trooper Front axles use the same outer joint....so a hybrid Trooper/Subaru axle should bridge the gap. The stock trooper weighed way more than this buggy rig will when done. I figure Once I build the frame with the engine and T-case, then IF i want to go straight axle all I need to figure out will be the axle itself.

    Spent Halloween working on my own Frankenstein super lifted T-cased Subaru project. 86 Isuzu Trooper diesel Front frame. Cut just behind the torsion mounts. Keeping the Isuzu A-arms, knuckles, hubs, brakes. Hooking up to Subaru 4.11 Diff using hybrid Isuzu and EA81 Axles. EJ steering rack with Isuzu tierods. Nissan 720 Transfercase Here's some teaser pics. Not sure it's really what I want to do......but it's a start.
  12. FSM specs at 180 degrees are 600 rpm = 14psi, 4.2 ltrs/min 5000rpm = 43 psi, 42 ltrs/min Pump relief valve (bypass)= 71 psi Relief valve in rockers = 10 psi??? Oil pressure switch light on = 2.1 psi. or less.
  13. An 07 3.0 vehichle could have VDC In that case, the ECU will be looking for some info from the TCU and ABS computers. Probably a hack around that with dummy sensors/resistors and may not affect engine operation if just left disabled. That and throttle by wire(don't forget to get the gas pedal) are the 2 things that complicate this swap as compared to pre-2006 ECU's
  14. Sometimes auto trans cars the belt can break and engine stops with no damdage. I would suggest buying a new t-belt (your gonna need it anyhow) and install it and then do a compression test. May not have bent valves or maybe only on one side. Pistons should be fine. Not a huge deal, it's a 2.5 so the headgaskets were gonna need done anyhow sometime soon. A few more valves is no big deal.
  15. When clutch is depressed hill holder acts as a one way valve(ball valve, active only at upward angle), holding any pressure that is applied to the brake circuit. When clutch is released, a pin protrudes into the chamber and keeps the ball from blocking seat/holding presure.........press clutch, pin is pulled back, and if the nose is up, the ball rolls into the seat, locks pressure. Simple mechanism, only thing that can really fail is the seal on the pin shaft.
  16. You also need to adjust the rear shoes. They are manual adjusting. ON the back side of the backing plate, near the bottom there is a rubber cap. Pull it off and it reveals the adjuster screw. Now it's not a simple screw, it has 2 beveled sides, and those faces interact with the adjuster pins. Each 1/2 turn aligns the faces. Jack up a rear wheel. Spin the wheel and turn the adjuster screw gradually one step at a time until the shoes begin to drag and hte wheel slows spinning. Back off one turn after that. After you've done that....then bleed as per above.
  17. Great for old school EA81 and EA82 radial ball bearings. But EJ bearings it's best to get good, japanese tappered roller replacements. Pack them with good grease before install....the packing grease is barely vaseline and just there to keep them from rusting on the shelf.
  18. Trans in picture appears to be standard 88-89 GL D/R. Part time 3.9 RX trans would have lever low on the right side of the tailsection for difflock.
  19. I paid 600 for a 96 EJ22 last week. Core would have been $150 but I brought a dead EJ25d for trade when I went to pick it up. The yards are realizing they can ask more for them now as they become more rare, and the cars that are still out there are getting old and people need engines.
  20. Legacy up to 99 Impreza up to 07 Forrester up to 08 Watch out though early legacy ones have a different swaybar mount, or some have no swaybar mount but all those will fit, same length and size.
  21. I don't mind the tape. It's when people take out the bulb or cut the wire to disable it that I get peeved.
  22. Everything except the Ignition relay and fuel pump relay should tie into the intake ground.
