Were any 1989 GL wagon's ea82 engines carbureted?
Gloyale replied to abcus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wouldn't have been built in Indiana. They started that plant with Legacies. Gunma, Japan is were all the GL/Loyales were built. -
EJ22T after swap problems. Fuel cut at 3 to 5 lbs of boost.
Gloyale replied to Steve W.'s topic in Subaru Retrofitting
#44 could be an issue. I experienced fuel cut when the wastegate hose came disconnected on a test drive once. Try hooking it up with stock boost control and see if it runs right. IAC fuel cut is really only an idle control issue to prevent runaway idle ECU will cut fuel to #1 cylinder. -
#4 cylinder is opposite side from the turbo. And All the cylinders should see boost the same. #3 cylinder is the one actually closesest to the turbo. IDK........not nessecarily a design flaw........definately bad luck. Turbos are generally more prone to all types of failures, but espescially ring lands. It's hard to tell from one photo. But I wouldn't think that the block would be too damaged if you spoob it down right away. Pistons break and are repaired all the time. Labor intensive, but cheaper than a whole new engine.....the case doesn't need to be split.....just pull the wrist pin, put in a new piston/rings and put some heads on it.

Yes. You will need a longer one. One from a Legacy will work.

83 GL wagon Fuel pump/relay(s) diagrams
Gloyale replied to Dwayne Oxford's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Blue/blk is 12v from Ig. Yellow has 12v from key on but bulb should pulse when cranking indicating tach signal from -of coil. Black is ground. Check this by probing the Blue/black and ground on the black with the unit disconnected. It's only showing 12v when hooked up because the power is passing through on its way to ground. If for some reason the black wire is not hooked to ground that would certainly make the relay not work. Check for power on the pump wire (blue/red) while cranking. -

If you only drilled one hole, you did not get the strt centered to the large hole in the middle. -

Check the vac line to the fuel pressure regulator. Just had a similar situation and it was a cracked line o the FPR -
Toyota Inclinometer Installation

Mitusbishi Monteros, and I believe it's twin the Dodge Raider also have these gauges. IIRC, they are in a compact housing mounted to the flat top of the dash. Might be a better swap candidate.- 13 replies

Thanks....that's more helpful. I have to say, were I'm at in Oregon.....If you head into the mountains....there are still quite a few trails with mudholes and ruts. Places in the forest where groundwater springs flow or just keep an area damp. They get somewhat dried up in summer, but that can even be worse.....as that mud is thick and sticky and you can't just blast through it. If you don't have good traction you can end up stuck in a mudhole......with dry trail ahead and behind. That's why I was asking. Cool to know there won't be much mud......I will probably rock the Toyo Open Country A/Ts I was gonna use for the highway. I had though of bringing the Bighorn M/Ts on a trailer or in my buddies pickup, but sounds like I'll just go with the A/Ts'

Nope. Non-turbo MPFI was dropped for the GL-10 in 87. All 2wd non-turbo cars that year are SPFI (excluding XT) 86 2wd non-turbo GL-10 would also be SPFI 85 2wd Non-turbo GL-10 would be MPFI 85 4wd Non-turbo GL-10 would be carbed He's got an SPFI car. My suggestion would be to do a leakdown, not just a compression check. Burnt or hung up valve can still show pretty good compression.

Ea82 engines do not have adjustable vavles

Well, as you mentioned fuel is different there, so are emissions and mileage regulations. That alone could make for a drastically different tune of the engine fo EDM than USDM. It may also be a conversion issue too. Don't they typically measure in Kilowatts over there? And is that Wheel HP or Crank HP What rate do they convert from KW to HP at? And does that conform to Subaru's conversions? At any rate.......EJ22 makes 130 outta the gate w/ no turbo and EXTREMELY reliable. Cheaper and easier to get parts for too.

Uh....well that doesn't tell me much. I would assume dry and rocky......but that could be wrong. I've never been there. I don't know if there are any mudholes, streams, etc..... Maybe just a description of the conditions? Also, what about fire danger? ANy chance the area could be closed for fire season?

No. The pump will be just compressing atmosphere or whatever else is in there. You will get the excessive pressure blown out, but never evacuated.......there will still be atmospheric pressure inside. The system will be full of air......mostly nitrogen, some CO2, so O2, and a bunch of moisture......none of which will work as refrigerant. You may have mixed luck just blasting a charge in there and getting some cold to happen. But without evacuating first, the effects will be short lived, and you will likely burn out the compressor. Some things are just better to have done with the right tool. A vacuum pump and a proper manifold at a minimum. Most good A/C shops will have a machine that incorporates both, and will inject the oil too.

I am correcting myself here. There are a few valve differences according to the FSM's 85 valve length = 107.3 mm in & exhaust (this could be typo, 85 FSM is full of typos and ommisions) 86-94 valve length = 107.58 in & ex. Turbo =108.1 ex. Additionally 85 sedans, and all 86's have 51.7mm outer springs....while all others have 50.7mm outer springs Inner springs are all 50.3mm That's it. Straight from the Subaru FSM's for 85,86,87,88,89,90 L series and 87 and 89 XT. Definately not enough variation to yeild almost half an inch difference in installed height. Nor do the year changes match anything claimed by TallonX. NOt sure what books he has, but if that's the info in them......I'm glad I "can't get them"
-
What are you talking about??? The heads are the same. Performance increase in 88? Introduction of EFC in 89? Carbs were dropped in 88. SPFI or Turbo MPFI (non-turbo MPFI in the XT)....that's it. No new engine variation happened in 89. Look man.....I've been working on these cars for 15+ years. I have EVERY EA82 Factory manual, every volume, and most all of the supplements and updates. EA82 heads ALL use the same valves.

What's the traction situation like? I mean, how much mud, rocks, sand, etc? Trying to decide on a tire set for the trip.

Open all fittings, blow out all tubes with compressed air, you want to get most of the oil out. Remove the Compressor, flip it upside down and let it drain. Remove and replace the reciever drier. Replace all o-rings, perhaps skip the ones on the condensor up front, but definately @ the drier, evap core(firewall), and compressor. NOW, here's the important part........... Take it somewhere where they have a VACUUM type charging machine......not just a tank and manifold. YOU have to evacuate the system. A shop with the right machine will be able to add oil during this evacuation and charge process. Fill with correct amount of oil, and charge with r-134 One thing to consider, the R-134 wont get the evap core quite cold enough to really cycle the compressor on/off via thermostat. So the compressor will run pretty much all the time. You will want to turn it off manually occasionally to give it a break.

1/4 drive, E10 DEEP socket is what you want. I ordered 2, keep one in the shop, one in the trail tools box of the wheeler.

Would you reuse this crankshaft sprocket? (EA82)
Gloyale replied to pianobrooks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
File off any rough spots and use it. I've seen many broken crank gears like that and it's not an issue. -
No. They are a different height to the from Bearing face to Wheel mounting surface. It will work, but the castle nut will either be on too far, or not far enough.....I can't recall which way....but the EA81 and EA82 hubs are not interchangable except for emergency type use.
