Sube Restoration on Bravo
GoldDiggerRoo replied to bryanthompson's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Cool blog Bryan! Love that shot of the wagon on page 6, got a bigger version of it? I used to have a lot of photos of '60's Chrysler products during the design phaze, mostly clay models that were on this rail type system. They'd lead the cars outside into this courtyard type place with a turn table and look at/photograph them. That pic really reminds me of those -
Cleaned EGR system, what a difference!!
GoldDiggerRoo replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So..... where is the ERG on these things? (never looked for it, never cleaned it) My hatch has been having some running issues, couldn't hurt to clean it I suppose. Pics? -
Wow, I didn't even notice the front, good work!

Door Lock Swap?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Uh, I need fenders, passenger side door, hood, seats lots of other odds and ends. My cousin needs a bumper and grille. I've been looking for someone parting out a hatch in VA. Let me know, my schedule is pretty wide open, so whatever time would be good for you for me to come down will be ok, I'll be there with tools in hand. I'm always looking for a road trip anyhow..... Is it a GL, DL or standard....FWD or 4WD? -
Door Lock Swap?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually, what kind of shape is the rest of the car in? I need a fair amount of stuff for my hatch and some stuff for my cousins wagon. I wouldn't mind coming down and checking out what you've got if it's ok. -

Door Lock Swap?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, since I haven't worked since like September, I'm really diggin' a free solution, like swapping the cylinder first... will it work? If I was gonna go that far, I'd find some one on here with a complete lock set (ignition, doors, hatch) since I already have a non matching ignition switch key (I hate two keys!). If anyone is parting out a hatch and has the whole setup I'd be open to it, but if not I don't really want to dump any more money into mismatched locks if I don't have to. -
So I went out to get my laptop out of the hatch a few minutes ago and couldn't unlock the drivers door. The passenger side was fine and so was the hatch but a total no go on the drivers door. I noticed small chunks or metal in the groove on my door key a while back, so I'm guessing the cylnder is pooped out. My question is this, can I just pop off the door panels and swap the cylnder from the passenger door to the drivers side? I really don't need to open the passenger side with a key, but I do need to be able to lock and open this car because I leave most of my junk in it (i.e. IPOD, guitars, laptop). Will it work or am I gonna have to find a whole new set of locks and get in thru the passenger side all ghetto like until then?

EA81 - adding A/C pulley ?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to dfoyl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A mechaninc friend of mine taught me the trick on these. Find out what size socket fits the bolt on your crank, get a big ratchet/breaker bar, if it's long enough, place the end of it on the ground on the drivers side (if not, add a heavy pipe to make it longer) and give the engine a quick tap with the starter (ignition switch) and it should brake the bolt loose. As for putting the new pulley back on, just tap it on, put the bolt back in and torque it to spec. I've used this technique several times, it's worked even when an impact wrench wouldn't. It's really eazy, but hard to explain, but you will need a breaker bar: Here's an example of the same principle, but instead of using the ground it's using the frame of the vehicle: The engine turns clockwise (from the front) pushing down on the bar and thus breaking the bolt loose. The pulley should come off pretty easily from there, maybe a little pulling and wiggling and you're good to go! -
I don't think you can get at all the screws on a first gen with the hood shut, not for sure on that though.

Just how much is 1.8L?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
http://www.jepistons.com/ JE is the Manufacturer, sorry. I think the piston itself was for a big block ford (can't remember) but it never got used, in that case it would be an FE piston. -
I would think if I had to put one in I'd got with a '04-'05 WRX scoop. I've seen an EA81 w/ a bugeye style on in and it looked ok, but I think the latter one would work better.

Honestly, in your case.... I would get the car staight enough to mount a fender, get a hood to shut and bumper on and ride it until the body shops can have a serious go at it. I personally have bent several of these cars out of shape, and they can be far from perfect and still most all of the panels fit well and function as they should. I WOULDN't go trying to straighten the inner fender by pushing the car sideways though, let that be until the bodyman can get ahold of it. Beyond pulling out the core support a little more, I think you could likely mount everything back on as it sits now. This is my former wagon the first time I wrecked it, I pulled the front end out with a hammer and a tow rope hooked to the back of my 280Z. Here is the same car with sheetmetal put back on it. The headlight bezels themselves were all that was holding the grille in and and headlight frameworks were very creatively adjusted to get them looking right. I also had this car looking as well (with the same fender no less!) You seem like you just need something to "get you by" for now. Once you get a good hood/fender/bumper back on it really the only noticable thing is gonna be the lower valence, but who looks down there anyway. It won't be perfect, but it will serve you until a bodyshop can work on it.

Wow, I have a JE piston that I use for a change dish in my room that's about the size of two of those together. Coolness! -
ea82 O2 sensor & feedback carb mystery
GoldDiggerRoo replied to 86surfwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I totally agree I wish you luck my friend, as I too have been stung by the feedback carb, on a EA81... but that's bad enough. If I ever ran into a EA82 with the feedback I would run for the hills. BTW, not sure if it'll help, but I can follow/photograph the o2 wiring for you, it's on an '88 Hatch, but I wouldn't imagine it would be much different, but in all honestly, I'd just go webber or SPFI. -
Junkyard/Dealership Fun Before Work PICS!

How was the passenger side door and hood on that thing? I need one. If you think about it find out how much for them. Thanks -
HID lights on the GL wagon
GoldDiggerRoo replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Atleast they're not banned. When quad headlight cars first started coming out in the 50's, they were actually banned in a few states, leaving automakers to produce state specific models with single lights. -

EA swap questions
GoldDiggerRoo replied to Subaru_Mechanic's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Do you have a pic of the carb? Better yet a pic of what you need? I have a Hitachi parts carb lying around, I may have what you need. -
So I've been eyeing this Sony Stereo/Speaker combo down at the local big box, from what I remember it comes with 2 5 1/4's and 2 6x9's. The doors are no big deal, but I'm just curious if I'll have enough room to fit a 6X9 under the plastic housing, in the factory location. I haven't had the chance to pull them off and see what kind of clearance there is, since this also covers the rear shock mounts also. Anyone know if there will be room, or by chance have a pic of a hatch without the covers on?

Adding foglights, alternator questions
GoldDiggerRoo replied to foxgap's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm gonna say no here, I've got two sets on my wagon, bumper and roof, most of the time I used them is for low speed off roading or when the car is off and I'm loading somethign into it. I have a stock alternator and cheapo battery, never in the time I've used them have I ever had a problem with the battery going dead or even turning over slow. Keep in mind you have to use some common sense, like don't leave them on for hours at a time with the car off, but I've left mine on for atleast 45min with the car shut off with no issues at all.
