  1. what exactly happened to the engine to make it "crack the head"? if it just lost a head gasket -replacing that head and gasket should have you back in good shape. if you suspect any block issues, then buying a good used block might be the best bet. get a used block and put new head gaskets on it if you want to avoid head issues in the future.

Well, I did not have any anti-freeze in the motor, straight water. A head cracked from the freeze, also blew out my intake gaskets. Some one told me that they have rarely seen a cracked subaru block.

  2. Basically sounds like the typical "Hi-crappy" carb to me! When I would first fire up my car, I would have to hold the throttle open (for about 1-2minutes) at about 2000RPM to keep it alive, and get it warmed up, then the high idle would keep from there.

About the hesitation, mine started doing that... I figured out it was the secondary jet leaking, at idle, and at highway speeds (for some damn unknown reason) and that was even after a rebuild. So you might want to check that.

I would suggest to rebuild the carb. (cheapest option compared to a Weber conversion) get it all cleaned up inside (outside too).

Also, some "bandaids" to try would be to turn up the idle speed, and mixture...

  3. The motor in my Brat froze last month, and cracked a head on an outside water jacket. I'm thinking about splitting the block to see if it is still good or what. But, i'm not sure if it is worth the time/work, if I could just buy a new motor. Any one have ideas/thoughts/experience?

  4. you know, its funny. I thought about making a comment that I was simply posting out of boredom on a night off.... and i get caught by a friggin flame. I intended no tone of condescension.

go pass your judgment somewhere else, we dont want it here.

By no means was I judging you. I was just making an off comment/observation; no harm was intended, I'm sorry.

  5. Dain']Well' date=' the cable is still too short after disconnecting it from the firewall (via a clip). I didn't mention that I had done the Carter carb. to Hi-crappy carb. conversion, which came from an '83 wag. (HAH, and now that to a Weber!). which included a new throttle cable, and peddle(from an '84 Brat) . Can't recall if the peddle was taller, or shorter; but that is the only available cable.[/quote']

I ended up modifiing a cable bracket to work.

  6. ...and when you cut the three wires on the plug, be sure to wrap them in electrical tape so they won't short out and kill the engine when your wife is driving the car. Don't ask me how I know.

Oh yeah, thanks alot dude. Hahaha, no need to tell those ;) stories, I have a pretty funny one on that page. I actually pretty much got everything figured out on it. I think I have a few more lines to cap. I deleted the EGR, I don't need emissions where I am. I ended up doing a crazy mod. to a Carter Weber throttle cable bracket. I actually just extended the height of it (I have pictures of it, not sure how to upload them). And for the choke, I had your exact idea, but I ended up just making a whole new wire with ends. thank you very much for your reply, I appreciate it. I'm not new to Subaru (or auto mechanics) but of course I don't know everything. So after all that, I figured out my head cracked from freezing, and possibly my block;and my intake gaskets blew, it sucks. didnt have a chance to tune it in (break it's hymin).

  7. I was in the middle of my Weber conversion when it suddenly dropped below freezing tempitures. I put a lamp in the motor bay to thaw it out, and keep the freeze off of it. I have a huge crack on the outside, in the front of one head. the freeze also blew out my intake gaskets. There was no water in the oil, and everything else seems to visually be ok. I'm just not sure if my block has been cracked on the inside or outside (beyond my visual check) machine shop sugested to split the block and then pressure check it. I'm wondering if anyone knows where these EA81 blocks typicaly crack when they freeze? and any other adivice about the whole cluster************ is appreciated.

  8. the throttle cable is long enough, unbolt the cable from the firewall.PCV-run the lines to your airbox. My electric choke never worked even on the hitachi.

  9. I put a brand new Weber carburator on my '82 Brat GL 1.8L. I'm not really sure how to hook up the electronic choke. I suppose I have to do some cutting and splicing? Also, what do I do with the throttle cable, the one I have seems to be too short? Last thing, what all gets capped(i've deleted most of my emissions junk)?! Pictures would be helpful, but any knowledge or advice will be greatly appreciated.
