a tribute to ol'e brown
ivantruckman replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my wifes laughing but im serious, im thinking i can fix her just one more time. but with respect to her ive got to let her go.. Am i crazy? -
a sad day, my trusty brown 86 could no longer go on. the michigan roads have been hard on her, not only is the subframe badly rusted , but now just above the drivers side radius rod mount, has developed a crack all around the mount. the radiator pooped and the drive shaft scatterd, just too much to fix for a 2 wheel drive 4 door sedan, shes on the hoist now on life support, and i just cant come to terms with it. i know i have to make a decision to pull the plug, so im looking for a ea82 wagon with a blown engine (arent we all), maby she can donate her organs and live on.... godspeed ole brown you will be missed

1986 EA82 GL wagon blues
ivantruckman replied to skagital's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one simple thing to try is check the o2 sensor, my craptachi carb ran 100% better when i replaced the melted o2 wire, if you have a vaccume guage it can tell you a lot too -
2 gl 4x4 's for under 400 bucks each
ivantruckman replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow GD .. i dont think my car is that rusty, but ill driver till it snaps in deed. i have driven it hard on the trails. doors and all the other body lines look good, no other issues. ill have to go to the west cost and get a rust free body.. i do think nurses are hot. they seem to like subarus however, maby the'll like my lifted 85 with a desert camo scheme. it looks sexy to me anyway -
in the last two months im michigan i recently purchased two gl wagons 4x4 dual range. one for 330 bucks and one for 400 bucks , an 85 and an 86, in bolth cases the owners were women mid 30's good looking ,and bolth were professional nurses. they had taken their cars to their trusted mechanics, and bolth mechanics said that the cars were unsafe to drive.. because of rust on the frames. they also refused to even work on them. they werent even as bad as the gl sedan ive been driving for 4 years (55.000 miles ) my question is the two protruding square rails under the front of the vehicle, are these actually load bearing, my car holds perfect alighnment. the bumpers dont mount to it, the engine dosnt mount to them, nor does the transmission, they look to me to be suporting the floor pans, either way i have two awsome ea82 dual range perfect runners in my drive way now , courtesy of two hack mechanics. in my opinion

How to Install a new wire to the fuel pump
ivantruckman replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would suspect a grounding issue, if the voltage is lower than normal, corosion is usually th e suspect, i had fuel pump issues (85 gl carb) and when i cleaned the ground for the coil the car ran perfect, also dont forget to use a electrical contact grease. i live in salt country and have never had a grounding issue after i cleaned and greased a grounding point. -
Loyale wandering front end
ivantruckman replied to Pineridge's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had a ball joint on my 86 gl fail. it didnt get sloppy it dried out and got stiff, weird. just a wiggle test didnt show anything. and i did get torque steer, just like you described -
i used a grey oil resistant silicone sealant on the pump. i let it dry overnight, i glued the entire mickey gasket, i didnt gobb it all over sloppy like, 8000 miles since and 50 psi just off idle. 40 psi at idle. so far perfect. did you check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage. what is the oil pressure

chevy trucks used a 6 lug 15" wheel, (for a 1/2 ton 4x4 chevy truck). also toyota 4x4 trucks, and nissan 4x4 trucks, they have the same bolt circle as a sube (140 mm) the chevy are more available in the east, or aleast michigan, UAW country, i get allot of flak for driving a subaru, untill i kick their a@# on the trails..

GL hard to start when cold
ivantruckman replied to CornerHard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1) double check the plug gap, 2)if the car is running rich and dumping raw gas down the engine it can foul the plugs too, even if their new , 3) you can also check the intensity of the spark, you can tape the plug wire to a screw driver have somone crank the engine and see how long you can get the spark to bridge , you should be able to get atleast a 1/4 inch spark gap. 4) i purchased a new cap once and it had a small hairline crak it acted just like that. *** is it harder to start when its humid out***? good luck -

Interesting Happenings of late.......
ivantruckman replied to djbroadus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hahaha my car did the same thing, 85 wagon. i put some mud over the headlight lense to dimm it a bit, drove it for a month like that, what a fun way to drive, improvise on the fly, also had a throttle cable brake, used a tent cord and pulled it thru the firewall. -

muff;er replacment question
ivantruckman replied to crazylong127's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i always get a generic 2 " muffler and buy the adapter for it. they cost 19.95 at autoworks, if you can weld just cut off the old donut mounts and tack them on, works just marvelous i must say -
ive done it ,gd or should i say axle master, i just think its not cost effective to do just a boot, same labor and the cost for the boot is about 1/3 the cost of a whole axle. i have done it just to say i did, but i just dont have the time anymore to rebuild components .
