  1. all the oil should be in the pan. but there will be some residual oil in the cam cases(like alot) just wipe it out with a rag. i got spare motors, with spare cam sases if you need one. or heck, come get a whole motor, i got too many
  2. those are 29S! and its an ea82. tuck that roll cage down a bit and tis lookin pretty neato
  3. ok, i'll be constructive now... this is as close to a snorkel as i have, and i've been through some deep stuff. http://www.xt6.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3618 theres some pics down there somewhere. im outta space on the usmb.
  4. dood, what good is a snorkel on the roof when your computer, and scary wiring is under the hood??!?!?! everyone please note: your computer is more sensetive to water than your intake.
  5. i agree, trees are alot stronger than spfi rubber.... but there is one good piece in that pic that you can use. the spfi rubber boot, and mpfi(they are hard plastic) fits right onto the carb throat, if you have a carb. then you can route the hose wherever you want, with a filter at the end... if the spfi boot slips off. take a file and file in a couple grooves, on the carb for the rubber to bite into when you clamp it. remember, your subaru wont be able to go like a submarine, so sticking it 2 feet above the hood, is overkill. but thats just me.
  6. all ea81s with 4x are a true 4x4 4wd system. when its in two wheel drive mode, all you are turning is one wheel in the front. when you switch it over to 4 wheel drive it sends power out of the rear of the tranny to the rear diff, which spins one rear wheel. so its strictly 4wd, and not awd. some of the newer subarus, mid 80s, ea82s. had a viscous center diff. and these were all wheel drive. the xt6s had a locking center diff, so they were all wheel drive, and 4wheel drive. but brats are 4x only.
  7. unless you shove an er27 in there, they always say "wheres the motor?" it looks hilarious when the motor is lowered 4 inches then it looks even smaller. the best thing about a subaru engine compartment is that its sittin in there the way a motor should. sidewinders are the worst cars to work on, i avoid those like the plague.
  8. i love pullin subaru motors. i hate rolling around on the ground. i pulled an ea82 last nite in 45 minutes. takes about 20 minutes to knock off the pp install new parts, shove her back in. pull the radiator and slide the motor forward about 8 inches. tranny way works too, and you can leave the axles connected.
  9. you guys try soap and water yet? i write on the gas tank of my motorcycle every couple weekends(for drag racing), with the same paint pens, and they wash off at the carwash.
  10. the only big problem i see is that the spfi injector is a huge bottle neck. it chokes down to about 1/3 the size of the wide open throttle body. i dont think runing the complete spfi computer for the single injector would work, you dont need any extra fuel untill you hit boost, and the spfi wouldnt know this. you could put the spfi computer on a boost activated switch, to turnon only when the car is under boost... but then it seems just as easy to wire up a fifth injector in the manifold. i think its too much complication, when all you realy need is a boost switch, a home made controll module, and a bosh cold start injector. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_extrainj.html that seems way cooler
  11. well... theres no real reason to read codes on a carb motor. the "computer" wont tell you anyting of use. its either ignition timing, burnt rings, leaky valve seals... or most likely culprit. a worn out carb. when the carbs wear out they run rich and put too much fuel into the system. and the computer doesnt know about any of that stuff. you can cheat tho. run some of that "guaranteed to pass emissions stuff" or if you ad an oxygenate to the gas, like one gallon of ethanol, to 5 gallons of fuel. if you can try it more than once, id try the ethanol. worked on an 88 hyundai excel with the same prob. also, make sure the cars hot, make sure you have the correct thermostat. if the motors cooler than it should be, emissions go up.
  12. morganm you are biassed cuz you had two, with dual exhaust. that sucked alot. i have one on my silver hatch and i cut off the end, so it looks like a stinger on a bug vw stickin out the back. i like thrush brand glasspacks better. they are only about 5 dollars more. but dont come painted red...
  13. ya, i have had the same carb on both engines. a 2xxk mile spfi, and a 120k mile carb block. same wagon. the carb block got less mileage, but i wasnt exactly testing under laboratory conditions.
  14. i bet they had turbos, they dont have throttle plates, or distributors. you cant mess with timing on diesels. have you ever seen a diesel, or are you just talkin out your internet educated rump roast? also this topic has been popin up since 1999 and the general consensus was that we will never see one in the us. short of a forklift or something off the wall like that.
  15. i guess the only time its gonna be easier to do it from underneath(tranny) is if your car is turboed. otherwise its easier to slide the motor forward a few inches, after you remove the radiator. you dont even have to pull the motor all the way out.
  16. if i was out even 50 bucks id be ***************ing... hoopygl must have more money than brains.
  17. my ea81 with 4speed has an 8 7/8 inch flywheel stock alot of them came with the bigger one. but you have to look. you need an adapter plate, and some new holes in your flywheel, to run that motor on that tranny.
  18. i think 5 mpg is an under estimation. more like7 from carb block to spfi block. in my experience.
  19. i can attest to the 9.5:1 gettin the best mileage of all of the subarus i have ever owned. even the one with 200k miles on it got 30 mpg. i would not want to run any motor with less than 9:1 compression without a turbo. slow, and lower mpg. the only time high compression makes mileage worse, is when you put your foot into it. if you could stand to drive a 10.5:1 ea82 like a grandma, youd get crazy mileage.
  20. 6 inch lift coupled with 27 inch tires, and an underpowered motor? doesnt sound too ultimate. note my avitar.
  21. drag racing is cooler than offroad, rallyx and street racing all put together.
