notice: im not attacking anyone, or saying you dont know anything. i dont want a monster, or a seperate transfer case, with two drive shafts, i have one of those, its called my 4runner. im just looking at ways to run some descent mud treads, imnot worried about the frame rails getting in my way, i have a welder. again, just entertaining some ideas here. im not one of the planned mods guys, i actually do stuff, so stop trying to make me look like a baby that knows nothing.

Can you replace an ea81 with an ea82
archemitis replied to pwoens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i used the ea81 flywheel with the holes drilled out, and remarked timing marks, because it weighs a good deal less than the ea82 one. again, assuming both flywheels are the 8 7/8 inch instead of the smaller one. -
in my opinion, i dont like dual exhaust, i have tried wide open straight pipes, with mufflers, without, and just straight pipes with baffles. i think with our head design, with the shared exhaust port, they like the scavenging, of either a 2 into 1 with the y-pipe, or at least a dual with a xover pipe, like the airplane guys recommend. stock y-pipe gutted, witha glasspack, or spark arrestor muffler, set 2 feet back has worked good for me, power and sound.

Remove Engine For Clutch Replacement?
archemitis replied to FATSIORIS's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i think the subaru motor is the easiest motor in the world, to remove, and install. it weighs about 200 lbs, and faces forward, so with the radiator out, theres tons of room. i say do the engine pull. but... my cousin did do it in about 6 hours by pulling the tranny back only about 8 inches, and leaving the cvs installed. lining up the clutch with the alighment tool was tough tho, and he had to spin the flywheel to move each bolt to the bottom of the wheel, one by one. i like pullin motors =] -
id stick with the efi, for obvious reasons. i have no diagram to complete the swap, but the spfi is pretty contained, to the motor, and the wires going to the computer. you should be able to pull the harness out, and unplug if from the fusebox, give the computer, power, wire in a couple relays for the fuel pump, and ignition power, and blammo! efi.

body lifts just seem like a waste to me, unless im going big, like 31s or something. you dont gain any suspension travel, and id have the same amount of ground clearance as a guy with a 3 inch lift with 29s. I turned them, and they didnt seem much worse than [pugs. I have driven morganms rig with 29s and its not bad on gearing. especially in low range, where it matters. and that hatch aint stock under the hood Its just something I was looking at and thinking about. I dont think I need a 3/4inch lift, I might make a less involved 2 inch one. its still kinda my street car =]

open timing belt failure
archemitis replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i should pull up the pic of morganms rig burried well past the front bumper, with the timnig belts sittinin rocky mud =] i have seen a rag stick on a manifold and catch fire under a buddies hood, so at least the worst didnt happen. i run open belt on my toyota offroader too, with out problems. -

help! electric fan won't come on!
archemitis replied to bratgirl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my girlfriends hatch did the same thing. i just took the power, ran it to a switch inside the cab, and told her to watch the guage. i thought it was just power going through the thermoswitch, and power goin to the fan, no relay or anything to deal with. and usually it is the thermoswitch, you can check that with meter, at normal temp it shouldnt have any continuity, and at about 210 degrees it should close. -
youowuld need a custom intake, and two appropriately sized carburetors. i was thinkin about doing this with two harley constant velocity single barrel side draft 40mm carbs, intened to run a 1200-1500cc motorcycle, so they should flow pleanty, and can be had pretty cheaply. and a throttle cable splitter, and a carb sink tool, and....... =]

Can you replace an ea81 with an ea82
archemitis replied to pwoens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and if you do this without making more room next to the rocker covers, with a hammer, or whatever, you wouldnt be able to change head gaskets, without pulling the motor =[ but it would have 10 or so more hp =] -
Can you replace an ea81 with an ea82
archemitis replied to pwoens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it goes in almost like it ws made to. youjust have to mix and match the flywheels. if the ea81 car is a 4x it most likely has the big flywheel. so youwould use the clutch from the ea81, and the flywheel from the ea82. that is assuming they are both the larger flywheels. other than that, youjust have to do away with hill holder, or replumb it and move it. motormounts mount up, you might have to move your coil, and lengthen some wires. -
carrier bearing mounting question....
archemitis replied to monstaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would guess long bolts with an 8th inch thick piece of steel on the other side, with washers, would do the trick. -
well considering my toyota, and alot of hyundais, and alot of nissan maf sensors are identical on the outside to ours, i think it would fit. looks pretty wussy tho
-
id have to trim more, and beat down some stuff a bit more, but that thing would fit without a lift! its a toyota wheel redrilled to fit, with alot less backspacing than the pugs i run now with 25.5s. i swear its all about how much japanese steel you want to cut!

i got an insert filter for some bigars diesel, and drilled holes around it, build a metal disc, with the square hole in the middle. drilled holes in the metal, to meet up with the holes in the filter. build a gasket to go between the metal and filter, out of a rubber hose, to hold the filter away from the screws in the maf. of course painted it:brow: and turned it backwards, to suck cold air from my cowl induction style hood. works good, and could probably be built with a dremmel, or a cutoff tool. the cone filter i got was around 35 instead of the 50-60 i was finding the "cone" k&n filters marketed to honda owners.

carrier bearing mounting question....
archemitis replied to monstaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
because youd have to spend some time and make brackets and stuff.... and youd have to weld those in anyway. on morganms, we didnt even use the spacers from the 3inch lift kit. just flipped it around, and welded her in! its reely not that critical, and welding has worked well several times....unless your afraid of fire =] -
tweeked her, still big tires, 106 =]

Strictly Custom: Bumpers with 6ton Clevis's!
archemitis replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thats the one thing we were lookin at beefing up. but its still twice as thick where the clevis bolts, as where the whole bumper bolts to the unibody. and maybe stick some more cross brases in there, between the two bars. oh and a integrated skid plate, and headlight hoops, and... but hes gotta get to iowa in two days =] -
A/F gauge reads full rich, bad O2 sensor?
archemitis replied to nkx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that gets me thinking, my car ran like crap after i hooked up a faulty one of these. make sure your not sending 12 volts right to the computer through the o2 sensor wire, made me think my computer was fried. -

those look nice as hell after they are painted. -
if anybody needs any of these i could get them for about 10 bucks a piece, plus shipping. they have a 1.7/8 inner diameter, on the clamp side. they are kinda like a glass pack, thats chrome, and tapered at the end. and you can run them with or without the baffle inside. i recommend this cheap mod, and it looks cool im sitting at a harley shop right now, on the clock. bored.

tire size with pug wheels and r&r transmission
archemitis replied to wingnwing's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ea81 or ea82? i think either way you could run 27s with a good bit of trimming and hammering on an ea81 with good suspension, or on an ea82, without much work at all.
