  1. so i got this mpfi that hasnt ran in a couple years, supposedly due to a fuel pump. so i changed the pump to a junkyard unit. now the car starts, idles for about 1-2 seconds, then dies. if i throttle it, it will rev up fast, and run out of juice even faster. if i pour gas down the throat, it will run, and rev up, untill it runs out of fuel. i pinched off the return line, after the regulator, and it does the same thing, but... theres so much fuel pressure, that doing this makes the lines leak, at the hose clamps. so it seems like i have adequate fuel pressure. and since its starting for a second, my injectors must be opening, then the computer is telling them to shut off. could this be something as stupid as a tps? andybody have anything i can try? thanks in advance
  2. napa sells an inline pump for some ford truck for 35 bucks. 50 gph, with 90 psi works on whatever you want part #2p74028 its round, so you can use a coil bracket to mount it in the stock location, cheapest one i have been able to find.
  3. ya, im keeping you in mind, but im pressed for time before the meet you should roll down to iowa next weekend.
  4. i hauled about 1200 lbs in a brat from minnesota to texas, and back. no bad results leaf springs suck and wouldnt work unless you went solid axle, which sucks alot too.
  5. so i put mobil one in this mpfi engine, that i transplanted to my 86 hatchback. it died 50 miles later. im not blaming it on mobil one, but damnit! i dont know what happened. the engine isnt dead yet, but the oil is sparkley now. the plugs look blackened, and slightly oily, not lean, like i expected. this sucks alot, because its the second junkyard motor its eaten. i know its not the cars fault, its me =[. anybody bringing an engine to the midwest meet? seriously, i need a new 1.8 with low miles. anything will do
  6. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12466&highlight=mcbrat scroll down to the diagram of the tire. im counting onthem fitting, but i have the adjustable suspension, so i can always go up an inch. and my suspension sits high for stock.
  7. mcbrat told me they are just a tad bit bigger than 185 80 13s, and i am counting on them fitting my ea81 without a lift. there are at least 2 guys runing around with ea82s stock with 27s. so seems to me they will fit. 30s fit with a 3 inch lift, but high speed bumps would rub like crazy
  8. I have never even seen a gen 3 head, but the longest runing ea82 (9.5:1 spfi) I have ever seen had gen 1 heads and it was just in need of rings, at 204k miles. it seems like if you get the heads off of a car that made it past 150k, they are good. maybe they were having trouble with the casting, and some were good, but some failed as early as 117k.
  9. second post, lube your cable, or pull it, out clean it, and lube it, worked for me. first post, you just gotta reach up behind the speedo, and shove the cable back in. if you lay in the floorboard and look up, you should see a cable hanging down, that pushes up into the back of the speedo, easy fix
  10. thats the other thing, near impossible to find. if you want a fun project, put togetherer a reely nice turbo system, with a big fmic, blow off valve, and t birt turbo. you will be left with a system with lotsa hp, quick spool up, and look alot nicer, with alot less headaches. but if you do do it, post some pics
  11. so you want to make a turbo car twce as troublesom? the last two times somebody offered up this idea, i said stuff along the lines of, this is dumb, and all that. because i think it wont work good either way you do it. so everybody called me a moron, but i have yet to see a twin turbo ea82. i dont think you wuld have room with steering and all, and if you dont wedge an intercooler in there, its useless anyway. i'll trade you a t3, or a dsm for any twin turbo setup anyday, but... there was a 3 cylinder, i believe isuzu had them, not impulse, but earlier than that. the turbo inlet was about the size of a quarter, with a tiny compressor, that is the only one smaller than a subaru i have ever seen. even the one off of a 1.6 isuzu is the same sizeas subarus mazdas/ford have the same general sized ihi turbos as subarus. or, maybe get two motorcycle turbos, made for a 750, that would fit the bill. honda and kawi both made them
  12. jf2af53b9ge117152 always wondered what this little bastard has been through, triangle/rainbow sticker on rear, with front end damage =]
  13. well, in that case i have a spfi parts car out back, with a good coil. private message me if you would like if for say 10 bucks
  14. 89, must be spfi or mpfi. my 85 mpfi system doesnt have one, as far as i know. but my 89 spfi has a coil with alot of plastic on it. what cars had this thing?
  15. ya, if its not the fpr under the hood, it must just be a pulse dampener. i dont have one on my efi converstion, and you can feel a very quick pulse, in the rubber lines, works without it though, most efi cars have it.
  16. ug, there was an airflow signal in there somewhere i got 35, 23, 24, 32, and 21. the 23 should be the air flow meter. my chiltons has different charts for spfi, xt, 85-89 mpfi, theres like 4 different charts, and its all differnet, eithere way.... what you want for that meter calebs? i got about 30 bucks i can spare before iowa. the car runs with the maf unplugged, so it could be bad and run good as far as i can tell. i blocked off the egr, so that explains that. even with these minor problems, efi rules!
  17. ok, this is on my hatch with the 85 xt mpfi engine, and fuel injection. the computer is spitting out a 35, i think, my chiltons says its a air flow meter code. i have the flapper style, and thought those were pretty tough, also, looks like im runing lean, as my exhaust is white on the inside of the head pipes.i have tried to clean the meter, and didnt do anything. to make the problem worse, i have the efi that was ONYLY on xt and early turbos. so they are rare, and i cant find one to swap. anybody familure with these, that could offer some advice on fixing my problem, or another problem that may send my computer this info, or make me run lean? it runs great till i hit the throttle wide open then it surges, and loses power, presumably pre-ignition also on a side note, mazda mafs look just like it, with the same plug in, but two more pins than the subaru, are there any others that will interchange? thanks in advance for the help
  18. look around at the flyguy sites, somewhere there is a site, that breaks it all down, brown tops, white tops, etc.
  19. and subimech85, if you hook it up wrong, it works as a vac retard. (not calling you a retard). if its in the wrong spot, it will get tons of vac at idle, and run at full advance, then when you floor it and vac goes away, it will set you back at base timing. instead of the other way around
  20. ya, thats about all you will need to keep, its not emissions, its so the car runs right. to understand it, take the disty cap off and suck on the vac line, the rotor will move a few degrees counter clockwise. it just moves the disty rotor so that the timing advances at partial, or wide open throttle. it starts at something like 10 before, and goes up to about 20 degrees when fully advanced. if you were firing at 0degrees you would make very little power. if the spark shoots off before the piston is at the top of the stroke, its kinda like raising the compression ration, because the explosion happens before the piston reaches the top. but too far before, and you slow the piston down with the explosion. thats usually a ping.
  21. 10thousand miles, while clicking is not unheard of. i have never sheared one ever, they always click, or wobble for me. junkyards!
  22. when building custom exh, where in town would have a weld in threaded 02 sensor bung/fitting thingy? napa? exh shop? i have one on my motorcycle that was 18 bucks from k&n, but was so thin, i almost burnt into the threads welding it on. anybody know the thread size?
  23. my 50 gpm/90psi efi pump, doesnt do that, and i got the stock alternator. prolly a dumb question, but do you have a small battery or something? got a gauge on that thing, to check if pressure is droping?
  24. after trial and error, i stuck the fuel pump in the stock location(under rear passenger seat, under the car) and replaced the two pieces of rubber with high pressure hose. when it was under the hood, the high pressure pump would run out of gas. should be an easy swap, just stare at that harness, it will be the toughest part, that and finding an efi y pipe, unless your ea81 has an o2 sensor. should be fairly easy, have fun.
  25. ug... it was a missing castle nut washer, not the conical one, but the flat one. rolls nice now. thanks alot everybody
