  1. the mpfi snorkel will clamp right on there. i had to file some little grooves in the top flange of the carb, to give the rubber something to bite into. mine is pointed straight back with a cone filter, where the spare tire goes. you could put a hose on there and run it into the cab, on onto the roof. mine had some clearance issues when the hood closed, because i have an ea82 engine in an ea81 car. i just had to cut down the rubber coupling for an extra half inch. you gotta cram it on an ea82, or clamp it hard on an ea81carb. works good, and its cheap.
  2. oh, that dew point thing is interesting. this old timer put it to me differntly. he said it was everything working misture out of the metal. guess he was kinda right. i think my timing might still be retarded a bit, because even driving, it takes 10 minutes to get up to temp. my pvc is blocked off, and the rocker boxes breath through filters, i have no egr, at all, and no heat tube from the exhaust. that might be something to it too. just wondering in general.
  3. yup, same, egr might be the only difference. but i dont think so. air suction, might have to be blocked off, too.
  4. ok, heres why i ask, i pulled a very high mileage engine out of a spfi wagon, and stuck it into my 86 hatch. im using an ea82 hitachi, with the emissions stuff plugged. on the spfi car, when it was fuel injected, it ran kinda crappy but not real bad, on startup. now that its carbureted, it runs like crap, for about 5 minutes, almost un drivable. so i was wondering, is this happening simply because my rings and valves arent sealing like they used to, and the carburetor exagerates this? or should i screw with timing some more?
  5. giant parts washers! how could a 4 banger ever use a 4 barrel, will you have to solder all the jets closed? 4 barrels on a subaru has to be some sort of joke, concidering without a turbo, you can only get up to 150 hp tops. thats alot more cfm than you need. please explain skip
  6. man, does it ever smell funny, under that carpet. i left all lmy tar stuff in, because i couldnt get it out to save my life. even without the carpet though, its alot noisier. and i have those thick floormats, to keep my heels off of sheet metal. perty cold in minnesota. but it got rid of the smell, and looks cool.
  7. best part about getting an ej to run, is you can buy a wiring diagram, drawn up specifically for that swap. its actualy for a vw vanagon. kennedy is the name of the company, that should make things a world easier.
  8. i love my hitachis. after trying two webers, and having nothing but trouble, im gonna stick with the stockers.
  9. but seriously, i dont know if you could ever find a shop to do this for you, if you have another car to drive while you figured it out, it could be a great learning experience. spfi is very simple, and is a great system.
  10. power steering is for suckers, if you got it, take it off, and enjoy the extra horses.
  11. im in, im up for trying some of those jeep rockwalling, im not afraid to scrape along on the unibody. hopefully i'll have mpfi figured out in the hatch by then. my birthday is on the 25th, so getting work off should be no problem. hilly parts of iowa rule!
  12. best part about a subaru, is the auto headlight shut off. dont know how many friends with newer cars, i have had to jump, because they left their lights on. oh yeah DR 4X4!
  13. thats crazy. silicone or hydrolic dot 5 or 3? if you mix 5with3 it will ruin you seals, makes the rubber turn to goo. if its just hydrolic brake fluid, it should just thin you oil out a bit. sounds like a crack head idea.
  14. thats what i have been trying to tell people for years, but i always get shot down. i had one of those rs cars. impulse rs 1.6. faster than my subaru, even when my turbo looked like that. but i took a turbo from a subaru, and used the cartridge, and it worked great. thanks for posting that.
  15. with that set up, has anybody tossed a set of front and rear live axles, from a toyota, or nissan 4x? i think my 4runner has 3.90 gearing. imagine the tire sizes and articulation. i have been wondering exactly how that worked too. nice diagram
  16. i guess the t-bird, should work just about the same. they had like 3 difffernt ones, so you gotta get the biggest one, i think its off the later cars. but the big t-bird and the legacy turbo are very close. and you shouldnt have to do any balancing, just take off the exhaust housing from you old turbo, and put it on your new turbo. you never have to take any props off. toss an intercooler in there while you are going through the trouble of plumbing. beat that sube!
  17. what exactly does this thing do, i mean, i guess its like a weak top motor mount. but when i took my ea81 engine out, i bent it a little, and havent hooked it back up. i havent noticed any wierd stuff that might be caused by not having one. just wondering, what do you guys think?
  18. i bet an intercooler would make all the difference in the world. and a bigger turbo.
  19. my hatch has crazy wheel hop. i notice when i push down on the bumper, the shocks kinda pump up. at first they are soft, then they stiffen up. could this be the reason for the wheel hop, when accelerating? or could it just be cold tires?
  20. and there are always the intake manifold gaskets. they often leak. and they can cause overheating, because they relieve the 14-17lbs in the cooling system. stop leak rules in these situations.
  21. yah, not just more, but make the stock ones bigger, like the one from the battery to the body. i have 4 big ones from the engine to the body, and one 0 guage one from the block to the battery.
  22. or you can just take off that hose, that is filled with coolant all together, you dont need it. but if its leaking, i bet your adapter is sucking air too. maybe time to retighten.
  23. i tried this. got it all hooked up, power everywhere it should be, all engine stuff plugged in... then i tired to get an ignition pulse, and couldnt get it. i either had the wiring wrong, or had a faulty part. if you find a good way to do it please let me know. tell me where you put power. hopefully somebody will post a good wiring diagram, or some good advice. i ended up pulling the mpfi motor out, ans sticking in a high comp. carbureted ea82. i will try it agian when it gets warm though. good luck
  24. hrmm electric fan is on a switch, so thats off. no clutch fan, on my ea81, so im thinking its gotta be alternaotor, or water pump.
