So long GL...
crazyhorse001 replied to Heironymous Josch's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For 7 years I had a 30+ yr old car as my DD. I can relate to the tales of a "rolling resto" You CANNOT restore a car while you're driving it & do it any justice. Due to circumstances beyond my control, my Pinto is being put back into DD status. For a 30+ yr old car it does pretty well on the road, but there's just no way it'd keep up on the interstate! You CAN use an old car as a DD, you just have to REALLY love the car to do it. -

$40/hub isn't too bad, I should have mentioned that this was back in '93, and the machinist was a buddy of mine. (still is) -

I had mine done at a machine shop. It cost me $15/hub, or $60. That was pressing out the old studs & pressing in the new ones as well. I took in just the "hats". -
After carefully considering my options after my HG failure on my wife's '97 Leggy with a 2.5 phase1. I'm wondering what engines will plug & play. It'll be easier to swap engines than to go the whole HG & rebuild route. The original engine smoked a bit, and had significant piston slap. C'mon y'all, what are my options on this OBDII equipped Leggy? WITHOUT having to rewire the whole car.

my wifes xt6 has no heat, please help

You may want to check over at http://www.subaruxt.com A great bunch of folks, many of them with Xt experience since the cars were new. -
I've got a $200 gasless flux-core welder. It came from Tractor Supply. It does ok with sheetmetal work, as long as neatness doesn't count. It's got a 50% duty cycle. That works out great for sheetmetal anyways. "Tack, move, tack, move, tack" It leaves a LOT of spatter though. I repaired the floors in my Pinto with it. Next I'll repair the spare tire well in the same car.

And besides, it's fun to throw sparks with power tools!

I had the hubs on my '86 XT redrilled to 4-100mm. Then bolted on some Fitti Twist 5 spoke rims. -
Advice on buying an ’85 Subaru GL Sedan

The 3AT in my '86 XT GL-10 was a sweetheart of a tranny. Nary a whimper out of it at over 150k mi when the car was totalled. Mind you it wasn't any kind of a powerhouse, but it was a REALLY fun car to drive. Considering the PO swapped in a carb'd EA82. -

Most likely personal preference. Take the car out & drive it. Don't bother with the stereo until you get the test drive over with. Listen to the car, is it quiet? Pay attention to the car, does it drive true? Is the steering wheel centered? Does it shift crisply? Use your nose, do you smell oil burning, or antifreeze? Make sure you get the whole car up to operating temperature. Also make sure the weather is clear the day you drive it. During the drive pull into a CLEAN parking space, shut the car off, & sit for a few mins. NOW check out the stereo, wipers, and any other ancilliares. Take your time & sit there around a 1/2 hour. Before you leave, back up & take note if there are any fluids on the ground, that weren't there before you pulled in. Subies in general are known to leak a little oil. A spot or two under the valve covers isn't generally terrible. In 30 mins a dime sized spot is ok, but could use some looking into. Anything bigger than a quarter is cause for worry. ANY coolant on the ground is a bad thing. Clear water behind the passenger front tire is from the A/C & is normal. (the ac compressor runs when in defrost mode)Trans fluid spots smaller than a dime are curious, but not terrible. On the restart pay close attention to how the car turns over. It should sound just like it did cold. A dragging starter when hot could indicate some issues. These are general used car rules, with a few Subie specific pointers thrown in. -
a question... whats wrong.

IIRC The timing of an EA series motor really doesn't have anything to do with TDC Try this thread from http://www.subaruxt.com : http://subaruxt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8194&start=60 On the last page there is a pic for reference that shows where everything lines up at. -

Plexi is pretty easily formed with a heat gun. I'd think you could get a sheet of plexi, the use a heat gun to form it over the original rear window. -
There are 3 basic OBDII scanners. 1. The El-Cheapo: These scanners cost about $40. They blink the code with an led, which you read, then look up in a book. 2. The mid-range: These cost $70-$120. These have a basic one line screen that displays the code(s) in alpha-numeric order. You then look these up in a book 3. The super-scanners: These cost $199-$1200. These scanners read, and interpret the codes, giving you the code, and it's cause. They can also read ABS, Stability, chassis, Hvac. THey typically use cartridges, or can be upgraded via downloading new software. Included in these are PC, or PDA based code scanners. the best really depends on how/why you intend to use it. The average car owner can scrape by with an El-Cheapo. The more advanced owner can use the functionality of the mid-grade, as it can be used in a running diagnostic mode. The Master Tech, shop owner needs the super-scanner. They need to deal with all aspects of various cars.

Anti-freeze question:
crazyhorse001 replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Those chemicals are preservatives...No need to mummify me, I'll NEVER rot away. Now my antifreeze is known by many names, White Lightnin, Moonshine, or even plain o'l Corn Liquor.
