  1. I agree, Swapping parts in ANY EFI engine without pulling the codes is just throwing $$$ at a problem. Add in some pretty expensive sensors & you end up throwing wads of cash away & possibly not fixing the problem.
  2. When I first read "Is the residue oily or waxy" I was like WHOA oil in the water? I'm used to closed deck engines where it's almost always the opposite. But lookin' @ nekkid pics of EJ25's, I see where this'd be the 1st symptom. Why oh WHY Subaru didn't at least put bolt bosses around the cyls is a mystery. Being the proud owner of a "new" '97 Leg wagon I'm reading these forums regularly. You guys ROCK I have yet to see a question go unanswered. Even my duma$$ ramblings get a response. Now back on topic WTF would cause a waxy residue? Is it like the waxy buildup on a bald guy's head?:-\
  3. It is definately an EJ25 I looked at it funny, or remembered it wrong, not too sure which. I've got a cold & the drugs may be fogging my already *ahem* clouded mind. *yearnful sigh* Ahhhhhh the joys of a misspent youth LOL I finally got Kat alone & had my way with her... DANG she's got moves! She's not flat out quick, but she's got more stick than the bottom of a school desk! I can tell she's got a few extra pounds, but they look good on her
  4. Why not do a "faux floor" install. Make an enclosure to fit the cargo floor perfectly. You could likely get away with 3" thick, depending on your speaker choice. You could hide the amp(s) in there as well.
  5. Oh yeah, I totally agree, The SVX isn't a sports car. If these were Ferraris , then the WRX would be the 599 or 430. The b**ls out WFO racer. The SVX would be the 612 Scaglietti. Comfy, capable, but ultimately not as much car as it's little brother. It's a long distance tourer for sure.
  6. Ok then I'll be hitting the yards for a black single din cubbyhole, or filler plate. Well maybe in a week or two when it gets warmer than 30F BRRRRR Thanks for the help... AND the humor To quote Mork "Humor ARR ARRR"
  7. No it's an old school cartridge fed unit. IIRC from the paperwork in the manual it's a pioneer. It says 6 disc changer... I think. Definately NOT an indash unit. The paperwork was from SOA, it was operating instructions. I searched the car over in any well hidden, but easily accessible places... no dice.
  8. New pics added to my Photobucket account at http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v205/crazyhorse001/1to1%20cars/ The car's name is from Subies being called 'Roos. A female 'roo is a Kate... sooooo thus "Kat" Oh yeah & this is one "Kat" that likes a good bath!
  9. Oh gee thanks:dead: I know it HAD one, cause the original build sheet is still in the owner's manual. I just dunno if it STILL has one or not. The dash controls are still there. If the changer's gone I'll hunt for or make a blank plate to replace them.
  10. a compression check will determine if you need major engine work. More accurate method, albeit needing more expensive tools, is a leakdown test. A valve job is major engine work! In today's engines, something has to be MAJOR league fubar'ed to need a valve job.
  11. I'm not a fan of the new "corporate face" of Subaru. It looks like they hired the guy who styled the Pontiac Aztek. I guess after that fiasco he'd work D**N cheap huh? GREAT BIG HEAPIN KUDOS to SOA for listening to thier customers... Now maybe if we yell loud enough we'll get a new Alcyone!
  12. Where did they hide the factory CD changer in a 97 Leg wagon? I'm guessing under one of the front seats?
  13. I own that book, it's got SCADS of info in it. From concept to production the FULL story of the genesis of these amazing cars. My personal fave description of the SVX is from the '93 or '94 new car issue of Motor Trend. "A car capable of transporting 4 adults at insane velocities though mischievious weather."
  14. Go to your local hobby shop & buy a "polishing kit" ($12) & some "The Treatment" model car wax. ($8) The Polishing kit will be sanding cloths in 3200, 3400, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000, & 12000. Start with the 4k & work up to the 12k. follow that with the wax... Viola! SUPER shiny headlight lenses! (Guess what I do for fun LOL) On the cheap... get some coarse rubbing compound & a LOT of elbow grease. I don't reccommend using a dremel as it's too fast & hot for the polycarbonate. maybe a VSR cordless drill, or a cheapie single speed, with a polishing wheel. I've done this on a set of SEVERELY yellowed Ford Tempo lights. They were so bad I'd have reccommended strapping a lighter to the hood! On the SUPER cheap (&temporary) get some "Future Floor Wax" & brush it on with a paintbrush... it'll shine 'em up until it rains, then it'll need more.
  15. That'd be my son Craig, a budding "Car Guy". By the way our Leg got her name today as well she's "Kat" & she belongs to "She Who Must Be Obeyed"
  16. I took a LONG hard look @ the timing covers today, and they appear to have only one big gear on each head, motor swap maybe? I was looking cause I was smelling oil burning off the exhaust. (appears to be a valve cover leak, have the cardboard under it as we speak) I went up in to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park today, to "play in the snow". Submitted for your approval, a Subie in it's natural habitat. How cold was it up there? how's this!
  17. Hey, that's why I'm here. I wanna know what to watch for. The earlier I catch any small troubles, the easier they'll be to fix. I love Subies, & hadda do some SERIOUS convincing to get "She Who Must Be Obeyed" to look at anything but a big gas hog SUV.
  18. I can't promise it's a 2.5, but the tag on the fender says EJ25. I'll snap a pic or two of the engine while I'm takin 'em tomorrow. I'm a NOOB to the EJ series engines so I gotta go by the tags LOL Also, th LSi is only on the hatch, it MAY have been replaced... I dunno, but hey I usually end up with "oddball" cars. That may explain my love of Subies. Had an early '87 XT turbo w/late 87 bumpers! (talk about an orphan! that thing didn't interchange electronically, with ANYTHING!)
  19. +1 to what Manarius said. You didn't mention checking the tranny fluid, so I will offer the suggestion. I know I know, the NOOB is giving advice. Stupid advice @ that LOL. Having worked in a (GAH) Ford dealer for awhile you'd be suprised at the people who don't know to do this LOL I'm from the "check the easy stuff first" school of troubleshooting. Guess that makes me lazy huh?
  20. Hiya y'al I'm Paul from East Tennessee. I just bought a '97 Legacy LSi wagon today (pics tomorrow when it's daylight) It's nothing to write home about, just your basic top line Leg, well, short of the OB. It's a 114k MI EJ25 with a 4spd auto (4EAT?), Leather, CD, Moonroof, & all power acc. Being new to the EJ series, are there any weak points I can/ should address? I've owned a few EA series cars (all XT's) & I know that Subarus are for the most part bulletproof. Thanks to y'all & to http://www.xt6.net, for reccommending ya. I'm lookin forward to years of companionship with both my new acquisition, & y'all
