Its just starting to show its age again, probably from sitting.

The main deal breaker was the Tranny. I didn't want to take the chance of trying to drive it almost two hours to get it home, I also didn't want to risk burning a valve with pretty much an open head, on, I think the driver side. The motor in the car is in very good condition and I didn't want to risk any damage to it. So that was why I walked away, plus I'd probably get a lecture from my folks after seeing how the GL looked when I got rid of it, and then what it was when I brought it back (Pretty much would have been the same lecture I received when I brought that Hilux home Lol) I'd glad you will not be driving it in the Winter time as a DD, so it'll have a chance. It would be a shame to put this much work into a vehicle, only to see it in the junkyard.

I plugged everything back in, fired it up and its awesome as always! Now I have an issue. When I turn my parking/head lights on, it blows the fuse (But the Parking lights work fine when you turn them on via the switch on top of the column) Also, when I put it in reverse the Back up lights don't work but the rear gate door lock keeps clicking like its locking/unlocking. Why? Everything is hooked up correctly, there is really no way to hook it up wrong. Non of the wires are damaged, yet something is shorting to blow the fuse. Also all the power locks work normally except for the passenger front door, the power lock does not work for some reason now. Is all this tied together or do I have multiple issues going on. Ideas on how to figure this out? I'm at a loss right now. -Tom

I finished removing all the stuff that was unneeded, it does run so much better. Its amazing how much crap you don't need on these. I also replaced the remaining Vac lines and fuel lines as I went along. Now I need to get the roll pin out of the front of the carb and adjust the mixture screw. Pictures to come!

Yep the interior is 100% stock, I don't think I retro fitted anything, but was gonna swap the steering wheel with one I have, but never bought the Boss or MOMO adaptor to do it. And as for the Headlights, yep they work fine. I tried swapping in Projector style ones from ebay and they had 3 spade terminals coming off the bulb, where as the stock Highbeams only have two spades or vica verca. Just to be clear, there are no front Blinkers hooked up at the moment, so the relay is going to click very fast, but the rear blinkers still work. The exhaust Matt is talking about is from the Mid-pipe back, the Header will still work as I welded it pretty solid. The header does need to be tightened up as it was hanging when I went back to buy the car, looks like someone didn't put all the studs back or they got ripped out somehow. I Heli-coiled the exhaust studs in when I did it, so no worries about stripping the Aluminum. Also it got stuck in 4WD when I was driving it home before I turned around and said forget it. But I did get it back into 2WD. Now, I am not trying to say anything bad about anyone, I just want to be clear on whats what when I looked at it.

I will have to look thru it again, I know it involved 3 relays Lol. xbeerd drew me up a diagram of it in working order.

I am now cleaning up the stock Hitachi carb, I am removing everything that is unneeded to make it run correctly. So far I have removed: Metering Port Vacuum Control Valves And the Anti-Afterburn Valves, plumbing and silencers. Need to get some expansion plugs and vacuum caps and remove a few other things.

Thank you Ferox for posting these photos, they do really help decipher what is not needed on the carb. I've removed a few things so far as you can see below, I will need to get some Vacuum caps since I can't find the ones I had lol. I will also be using some Expansion plugs for the larger ports (Like in the Air Filter housing ect) So these must be the Metering Port Vacuum Control Valves And here are I believe to be the Anti-Afterburn Valves with plumbing and silencers? So far I think I'm headed in the right direction.

Here is the nice fitted radiator that came with the car lol.. And here is the carb after spraying it clean.

Alrighty, so here are some pictures from mine. Can someone please tell me what these items are. This one has two vac lines running two it and is on the driver side of the air filter. This one is under the air filter and next to the Thermostat housing pretty much under the throttle cable plate. This is on the passenger side and ties into the the header block, in-fact there are two of these, the other is on the driver side. I know its for emissions, but forgot what this is called. This one is above the thermostat housing on the passenger side, it has two vac lines that run to it. This is on the driver side and one of the vac lines runs to the Carb and the other runs to another unit under this one. I think these may be the Metered port control valves as they bolt to the intake, and both feed other components. Am I right? Both of these are on the passenger side firewall. And lastly, this is on the driver side closest to the valve cover. Help with any of this will be indeed wonderful! I am trying to make the Hitachi as simple as possible by following GDs old post, but the photo links are dead so I have no idea what is what. -Tom

It would be a pleasure to see the car get finished! There isn't much to do body wise. Just the rear quarter panels and wheel arches, new front fenders and the rear roll pan area and it'll be good. Possibly a new door or fix the current rear pass door. You will also need to wire in front blinkers or finish my plan of turning the corner lights in to parking lights and blinkers. Cheers, -Tom

Its running lean. If I stuff a rag into the carb while running, the idle picks up and it smooths out, and the dead spot goes away. The plugs were White so that indicates a lean situation as well. I snugged the carb mounting bolts as there was a small leak at the base, doesn't seem to be there now. I will also swap out the Fuel filter. Also, just to clarify. The cooling fan plug has two wires right? One Blue and one Yellow? The fan has the same colors, except this is the 2nd fan on the passenger side as the other fan was removed to put a ATF cooler there. I really need to get this fan working under factory operation. Also, I don't even know if the Thermo-switch is any good, it is glued into the radiator (Not a factory radiator)

I think these are indigenous to the rear disc setup only. Looks like the spindle is about 1/4" longer than the fronts. I don't think the EA81s would be much different than the EA82s.

Alright, so I am going to remove a couple unneeded things on the old Hitachi ('83 Coupe to be exact) but I do need some photos of their locations as I forgot whats what. Done some searching and I did pull up GDs old Hitachi thread, but the photo links have been broken, so no images to go with all the text. Here are the 3 things I am looking for. Anti-Afterburn Valve Thermo Vacuum Valve Metering Port Vacuum Control Valves If someone could post a photo that would really be tops! Thanks, -Tom

Even with a full tune up and spraying down the carb, it has a nice dead spot off idle. The carb is actually shinny new looking inside, the Jets (At least what I can see look mint) I suppose with 75,000 miles it should look decent. There are no pits inside the car (Good sign) I think I am going to follow GDs very old post and make the old Hitachi run the best it can for now. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/83289-you-and-your-hitachi-a-sordid-tale-of-love-hate-and-vacuum-valves/

My '92 Landcruiser: Safariwagon-II

I am hoping to take this up north close to Rhinelander to "The PipeLine" for some offroad fun this weekend. We'll see if this happens. Pictures of course! -
Thats how I put the rear bearing in (Actually used a large socket to tap on, but whatever) Good to know I won't have to press new ones in if needed. My plans are to also swap EA82 front brakes on this and if I could find a set of rear discs again I would stick them on this car (I guess they are like Gold, or unicorns now days) Put new NGK G-Powers in today, I will be getting new Cap, Rotor and wires tomorrow. I am going also dumb some Seafoam in the car and hope it'll help it run. I have a nice dead spot off idle. I want to again swap in another carb. I wasn't happy with the new Weber I stuck on the Skiwagon, so does Edelbrock make a carb that would swap in? Looking for a nice quality one that'll actually start in cooler temps.

This was the front wheel bearing though. The rear I don't have an issue changing, I did it on the Skiwagon. The front I think needs to be pressed out, and I don't have a press handy at the moment lol. I'm gonna see if I can splooge some more grease in both fronts just for giggles.

Figured out what the awful noise was while driving it home, dude told me it needed a wheel bear. After further inspection, apparently finger tightening the Axle nut, doubling the washer and chewing up the Cone washer was deemed acceptable. After I corrected it, I don't feel any roughness or play in the wheel bearing, but who wants to take a guess at how long until it fails...?

As of 7-26-14 I have bought this '83 GL 2Door Coupe locally, I couldn't resist for $900 Some info: EA81 with Hydro Lifters (Possible Calif. Spec emissions) Jatco 3AT FWD 3.700 Mileage: 75,745 The Undercarriage has some rust and a couple holes but is very fixable. Right now the plan is to get it running smooth, go thru it all, change all fluids and leave it be until Safariwagon is finished. Time for photos! When I went to pick it up. Got it home running on 18lbs of pressure on every tire lol. I've always loved the rear of these cars. Does this thing have Calif. Emissions on it? And yes, this is someones half assed attempted at replacing the radiator with one that does not have a built in ATF cooler. This will all be changed. Also working on getting some new Weather stripping. Loads more to come! -Tom

EA82 fired up for the first time in months. I hooked everything back up in a hodge podge manner just to make it to the Subaru show Aug 17th. I am far from done but will continue with the heavy cutting/welding after the show. For now I am going to finish up some minor things and get the rear of the car back on the ground, take it for a spin and make sure everything is working as it should! Haven't heard an old Subie rumble in some time now.
