+1 to that, Mine looks like childs play compared to this - but I don't really call what I do "wheeling" its more like dicking around in the dirt. Looks like great fun though -Tom

I took out everything for the A/C except for the pump, I also took a video: Video was before I removed both A/C lines. Subaru Idle -Tom -
4 wheel drift is fun as hell! People always look, there were some punks with a riced out 91-93 civic sedan last year at pick'n Save in the parking lot - trying to do some sliding. Mainly reversing and gaming it in 1st again. SO Me and Mom hop in and I do a huge 4WD slide in the parking lot (Had to turn around to leave anyway, so what better way to do it eh lol) They were like WTF...... Drool. plus after I stopped the slide, I popped it into N and gave it a nice rev to show off Haha. Boxer baby!
But yea, mine was solid as hell on the road last year too (With 13" Douglas tires lol)

We only had some flurrys one day a few weeks ago, I kinda hope this isn't a bad winter (Like last year) we broke the record last you for snow fall - it was like 106" IIRC. But you gotta love driving in snow, its soooo quiet and smooth.
Aha, yea thats the same thing I've been doing with my wagon. Just to stop the rust (Keep my car around longer) I wish they would stop using salt on the roads here - but funny thing is, not all the countys use salt. Some use a beet juice mix with Aluminum cloride or something. Not Waukesha, they dump piles of salt at intersections and whatnot (HA! lame)

Winter is upon us! Dunno bout you guys in Idaho? Well not really, its been in the upper 60s all weekend and supposed to be like this for a few more days (On and off rain though)
I heard Colorado had snow already - eek! I don't like how some people drive in snow (If you can't handel your machine or get one thats capable enough - then stay home . ) Hell people get into crashes when it rains WTF? Lol. So I hear you an LegacyGirl are restoring a Brat - was it? Hows the progress?

Yep recheck the fuses as I had something simular once. Everytime you depress the brake pedel that fuse would blow (Found out that a sliced wire was grouding out under the dash) the Brake lights are not on the same fuse as the Trail lights. I'd get a multi-meter on the rear light sockets and see if you get any voltage when the pedel is pressed (Like GD stated) -Tom -
Ok, so Rod knock is off the list - cause I've put prolly over 7,000 miles on it and it always sound the same when it does start (did alot of joy riding, rustic road finding this summer) The other main time it makes this noise (Much louder and somewhat continues) is when your pushing the engine trying to do 60-65MPH on a slight up-slop on the interstate - throttle is about 3/4 depressed. I figure its not getting worse, so I have time to figure out what it is. One thing I noticed is it seems to act up more after a recent oil change, huh? Thats why I've been leaning towards a lifter. Ok, I might give this a try sometime. So retard it to about 15 BTDC and see if anything changes. As for a Rod, wouldn't you hear that just be free reving the engine to high RPMs? Maybe not sinces there theroecticly no stress on the engine. Another question since we're on the subject - Would pinging come from both Heads not just one or the other? And what are the odds of lifters or Rockers having play in them? Thanks for the extra knowledge PS: exhaust gaskets and y-pipe and mid pipe are both new (Mufflers the only thing thats old with holes, Rumble!)

GD, This is a interesting thread. I wish I knew what a ping sounded like under a load - cause I have a noise comes under a load while the RPMs are somewhat low, it also comes if you punch it when the RPMs become high (3500-4000) Would a ping sound like something has play in it (Rocker arm, lifter body) Cause I've just been thinking something has be worn over the years from the PO's and thats what this noise I have is. Could this be a ping? I've never touched the timing, so I assume its still whatever the factory set it at. Anyone have a video where I can hear the pinging? I wish I could discribe the noise I have better. (No, its not a lifter tick) sounds like slop in something in the driver side head. -Tom

The only real diffrence in the Newer EA81s - is Subaru then fitted Hydro lifters instead of the solid lifters and push rods the older style EA81 had. -Tom

Only thing I would watch is the engine years, since the EA81 was still made and available in the GL hatchbacks and Brats till '88 I beleive. The GL/DL wagons and sedans from '85 to '94 all have the EA82 engine, which isn't interchangable with the EA81 parts (Few little things, yea. but not much) So if you are looking at parts for an '87 - make sure it is a 2-door Hatchback not a wagon or coupe. -Tom

Nice shocks, Rancho makes good products (Dad/Mom had a '88 Hilux and dad added stiff rump roast Ranchos to it!) Anyway back on topic, Just had a thought pop in my head. How come no one ever took some stiff gas charged shocks and use them in the rear on a wagon? Why do you need a coilover? To me, it you can get a stiff shock there is no need for the coil spring. (Any thing I'm over looking?) -Tom

torxxx, The hinges are perfect - no play what so ever. Haha yea I have the same problem with the door seals too - a couple of those T-fasteners ripped the hole they go into (So I went the same route you did) mrblasty, Hmm thats an idea - I'll keep that on the back burner for later. The rubbers are pretty much in excellant shape - just the window needs to press against it harder or the rubber is loosing its puffyness. John, oh yea ok - Now I remember. I will look at those and see what I can do. Thanks for all the input guys, -Tom
