You know, you're right. I wasn't thinking about it, but yes they are. Yeah, it is flush. I was thinking about getting a transfer punch, smack it dab in the center, and keep stepping up drill bits until the bolt is very thin/hollow, then it might just break on or the hole. Maybe I shouldn't bother? Leave well enough alone. :-p

I got the blocks off. I did break one bolt. Its flush with the head (Boo) But I can use the other two holes for the flange. Wish I didn't break that one bolt, last one too. Now I will definitely need an EA82 header for now.

If anyone has the rear quarter panels/wheel arches from a Wagon or Sedan, I need them ASAP. Starting to run out of fab time before winter... Lets make it work!

Oh no! Gave it a little too much gusto?

Yeah I agree, its easier to build the car you want, than trying to find it. Plus you can make it more personal, your own details and everything. Something you may want to find out is, if the Cams from either motors make a difference. Also, being a 1997, you might have a Phase-II EJ22, which will have the flatter style valve covers, where the spark plug goes into them, vs the top of the head. 1997 or '98 was the year for the Phase-II motor. Another thing to know, 1990-1995 EJ22 motors will have Dual-port exhaust ports, where as the 1996 to..? Will have the single port heads. The Dual port heads are more sought after, because you can swap on a Non-Turbo UEL header to give your subie more of a deep rumble. Although, someone on here makes custom Single port headers now, Mandrel bent too! 1990-94 EJ22 will be OBD-I, 1995 EJ22 will be the same exact thing, except this motor has the OBD-II harness. So this motor is kinda the "One to have" because its OBD-II and still has the older style heads/intake. As for EJ18, 1993-95 Impreza FWD will have the EJ18. If the Impreza is AWD it will most likely have the EJ22. Cheers! -Tom -

If I remember right, the SOHC Heads from an EJ18, EJ22, EJ25 are all the same, the port size is different which is what changes compression (Please correct me if I am wrong) You can also take a 2.5 block (SOHC or DOHC) and swap EJ22 heads onto that for a High-compression EJ25. The main reason the EJ25D (DOHC) has such head gasket issues is, there aren't enough bolts to hold the torque evenly over the entire head, so there is a weak spot with usually blows. As for modding, you'll find a lot of that around here too. Its where I got my start, and now I'm building up a Landcruiser. Subarus are fun, easy and cheap to build! -
Tom, thats a good thought on the o-rings. That is possible. I don't remember what the original grommets looked like when I removed them. Mick, I'm gonna try my damnedest to remove them. As I do not want them when I make my custom header, want a nice thick flange bolts straight to the block. We'll see what happens when I get some money lol.
-
I never did mention earlier, when I removed the oil pan. I found two small black plastic rings (About the diameter of a pen) I am thinking they were once rubber orings, but for what? Why were they in the oil pan, and what are they for? I noticed no issues while driving though. Also found some chunks of other matter in the oil pan, like something chunked away. Luckily it was stuck to the oil pick-up screen.
-
If you were to remove the thickness of that block, I'm pretty sure the header would hit the crossmember or something to that effect. The EA82 header is indeed longer (Has more down pipe before the 90* bend) If you look at the gap you currently have with the blocks, there isn't much space, think about the motor when it twists from torque, there may be no room for movement. If I can get my blocks off, I'd see if the header fits! I'll take pics of it, if I get them off.
-
If I remember right. The EA82 flanges will line up with the holes the Blocks used to bolt to. There are two sets of holes on each head. I will look under the Loyale, then look at the EA81 and see if there are any differences that would not make this a direct bolt on.

I'd be interested in seeing what you do to it! Dunno if I'd vote for swapping a SOHC 2.5 in place of the 2.2 - I am betting anything that 2.2 will hold up well, mine had 225,000 (And its still running with the other owner) If anything, if you want more tugging power, swap EJ18 heads onto the EJ22 block to make a higher compression motor and boost your torque. -Tom -
I may do that as a last ditch effort, cutting looks like a little more work, as you can only get to the two outer most bolt heads. I would have to hack up the spacer block in order to get at the other two. I would give the torx bits a try if I had more than $1.97 in my bank. :-p
-
Its sunny here, but cold. So I ain't doing much this weekend either, money doesn't allow progression on the Subie. Fox still has an ER27, I think you need to remate that trans with the motor it belongs to
-
I'm removing the blocks because one of the holes is stripped out, these blocks are rotted and need to come off. I have to buy some large torx bits to remove the bolts, I am thinking they are T55?

Gonna take my flywheel here (Its just down the road from me) http://www.engine-rebuilders.com/index.html

I found this post useful in your build thread. Although, I am wondering what my shop is gonna do for a step. Most likely they would just look up the specs, right? But as you mentioned, a different step can/will give you more clamping force. So since I am running all stock EA81 4WD clutch components, what step should I go with? Let them figure it out, or tell them I need this step. Would .815 work on mine, or does this only apply for an EA82 clutch?
-
Yeah, you cannot run the EA81 y-pipe without those spacer blocks, as the downpipes are shorter. An EA82 y-pipe should bolt right up as I've been told.
-
Sweet, sunday will work. I will have a fist full'o cash for ya! I'll call you when I'm headed out.
-
Yeah that'll work for me. I won't have the flywheel done till next week friday, once thats done I can put everything back together and back in.

Gonna be going up north on Oct. 6th, taking the rig on Northwoods OHV park for the 4wheelinwithfeelin event. Helps support March of Dimes. Wish I had lockers! -
Yeah, I need a header for the EA81, I'd go with an EA82 header so I can eliminate those blocks on the bottom of the heads (As one is stripped out) I need something until I build my UEL header. I wonder what shipped would run on that?

Scott might know something about cabinets, he's doing all that kinda stuff to his new place.

I can do $125. I can also lend a hand and what have ya, Just have to see when I'd be free. I'm working two jobs now, doing the ABM cleaning for full-time, and working at Target in the dock from 345am till whenever. I can swing days any time after 11am. I never sanded floors, but I can't imagine it being too hard, I catch on quick. I can probably scrub the floor, you gonna use a Single disc scrubber or something?
