I could think of a few better things to do with a VW

Eww, why? I like a tire with nice sharp square lines. Stretched sideways give me the hebbie jebbies..

OTC Axle Install Tool
I've never found swapping axles hard, either removing or installing. Turn, Push/Pull and Wiggle and it always pops in thru the bearing. (Rear axles on the other hand is a different story) Kinda a neat tool though, its like a "Blind Hole Puller" never knew it existed, but comes in handy!

My new brat project!
Disreguard that part in my last post, I forgot you are going to run an EJ motor, so if you ran an EJ trans you wouldn't need the adaptor plate (Doh) But like you said, you would still need it for the EA trans to the EJ engine. So alls good

As you can see here, the wheel bead is sunken into the tire more, so there is more rubber sidewall to protect the rim from rocks ect. Also like this, the wheel is a 15x7 but it is a 10.5" wide tire. You can also run a 12" wide on the same 15x7 wheel.

If you put a skinny tire on a wider wheel, it willl bow or pull out the sides, a tire shop will not mount a tire that is to much narrower then the rim, as it is a lot of stress on the bead. You can mount a wider tire on a less wide rim, it will protect the bead lip more if offroading (I see this all the time on offroaders)

Finally! Back in a Subaru.
I would like to see that! I wonder how well that will fit the roof.

My new brat project!
I'm not sure about the starter placement on the newer trans, I know on my '95 4EAT is was still in the same spot as an EA82. If you go with an EJ trans, you will need a $200 adaptor plate (or possibly make your own) it has to be the correct thickness as well (1/4" or 3/8" IIRC?) Also, clutch kit is more costly for the EJ trans. WRX might have a Hydro assist, I know the first gen Turbo Legacy does. As for logical, it all depends what you'd like to spend. The 5spd D/R is probably cheaper and you have tabs on one, right? So the hunt is already taken care of. I personally would use the 5spd D/R. Anybody else?

My new brat project!
The 5spd D/R will hold up just fine, just don't be dumping the clutch and such, its not a race car. The 4spd D/R out of an EA81 could handle the power/torque, but then someone started getting careless and started dumping the clutch and doing burn outs (Blew that gearbox up pretty good) 5spd D/R is the way to go. a STi 6spd will very costly. 5spd Legacy, and then you need to figured out the AWD bs.

Ah, I understand that now. Finally got that cleared up after 2yrs! Good posts, thank you.

lift or trim the fenders?
If you were to go the XT6 route, your currant axles should work if I remember (As the XT6 is an EA82 chassis and motor with 2 extra cylinders) And I'm pretty sure the spline count is the same (23) I don't think it is (25) either way, even if thats the case, you can swap CVJ and or DOJ cups around to make it work. I agree, the 6 lug is a lot quicker and easier, plus cheaper. I know the XT6 swap stuff is costly, its like gold so I've been told Haha.

Ah, I get what your asking. I don't really have an answer for that. I guess if I were looking at wheels, I'd look at the lug seat/surface and how the spoke would interfere if at all. Somebody else will chime in.

lift or trim the fenders?
Yes, 14" Puegoet wheels. If you get all the goodies, Splindles, knuckles struts ect. you could swap in XT6 5 lug on your car, it would be all bolt on and then you could run whatever 5x100 wheel you wanted. Pretty much all 5lug Subaru wheels would work (Except for the 5x114.3 found on STi) Theres an idea

lift or trim the fenders?
They are similar in cost, finding them in 14" was hard at the time, but I guess they brought back the BFG AT in a 195/75/14? or something. But if you are going bigger then 14" rims, it'll be easier to get an offroad tire. I think BFG makes the KM2 in a small enough 15" size, I've seen it on someones wagon. I run KM2s on my 80-series Landcruiser, awesome tire in every condition!

13" diameter wheel (Stock size) 13" wide wheels! OMG.... That would be nuts on a Subaru haha.

You can stick MPFI onto the EA82 easier, given you have the intake and the ECU and some wiring. EA81 might have more options since its popular with the Aeronautical world.

lift or trim the fenders?
$700+ mounted and Bal. I went with them over the SSRs because Superswamper was back ordered.

Yes, EA81s are OHV with Pushrods. They probably make about the same power/torque being that they are both 1781cc motors. I personally think either motor is easy and cheap to maintain. Getting the correct parts for an EA81 is tuff sometimes (Just getting to old)

IMO Offset is another word for Backspacing. (At least thats what I go by) As long as you go bigger then 13", nothing will interfere with the brake system, Calipers, Rotors and or Drums will all clear. Width will be the only issue, may hit the Spring perch or Strut body, Possible rubbing on Tierod end. But you can run a pretty wide tire on these.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. Just like the old Landcruiser motors.

I was under the impression that the Cams were gear driven? I haven't taken my engine apart yet lol.. That comes later

Gears, no chain. Just like the Landcruisers. T-belts shouldn't break every 40,000. Mine were original with 110,000 on them and after being covered in oil for years lol, still holding Cracked as hell, but where holding.
