  1. Damn I'm really starting to dislike this car. Today I decided to take her out for a spin, she started up nice, idled perfect all in all, a good start. Since she was low on fuel I took her to the closes gas station. As I got there she started sputtering like she had no fuel. Close call I thought. So I put a few gallons in, and go to start her. Nothing. After a few cranks I start smelling gas. I figured it was the lines around my fuel filter, a previous problem area, it wasn't. It was coming from my exhaust. So I decide to let her sit, and try again, no go. I decided to pull the plugs and see if i could flush out a bit. All four were covered in gas. I crank a few times, re-insert the plugs, she tried to fire once. So I went and got new plugs, tried a few tricks from the mechanic I talked to and she started! Firing unevenly (major engine rocking @sub 2k rpm). Checked my spark plug wires, all are making good contact, but still ran like crap and took a while to start every time i let it die. Wouldn't idle either. So I start to cautiously drive her home (about a quarter of a mile) she died when I had to stop on the last 100 feet. So I tried to get her moving again, no go. Completely flooded again. So, anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I'm getting real frustrated with this car. I wanna keep her but dang....anyone need a turbo parts car? :\
  2. Yeah, got to digging, the sleev around the CV is completely shot. One problem down. Did some wrenching on things, the arm from the diaphram was stuck. A small twist and it moved freely again (well as free as a hard to move diaphram gets) bolted her back up, re-attached the lines. Bam, engine is running smoother, no more black/blue exhaust and she seems to have her spunk back. Gonna go for a test drive real quick. If it seems like i'm just too stupid to try easy fixes, it's cuz i'm going forward with extreme caution. Dun wanna break anything Thanks for the help so far guys. EDIT:// She runs again, nearly PERFECT this time around. Before I had some flutter around 4500 rpms, GONE! Boost? smooth and constant! and she's a bit quieter too. Though I've made an interesting discovery (been nearly 3 or four weeks since i last touched my coupe) the knock isn't really dependant on engine speed, and increases with road speed, but the knock is persistant (regardless of rpm) while sitting /coasting. 1000 -> 5000 = constant knock when not in gear and stopped. while rolling the knock is faster. Weird.
  3. @gloyale: Sorry if I wasn't clear on the knocking, it seemed to be go by how fast i was moving. I'll see about removing the pin in a bit. @turbone: As far as I know, I currently have no cat (previously rusted off and removed by previous owner), Unless I'm mistaking my downpipe for something else.
  4. Tried pliers, under what should be near boost conditions (just a smidgen under 3k) Pushing with pliers. I can't get any motion out of it, pushing or pulling. As for the knock, that I'm not sure about, unless rod knock is conditional in flat fours. 1000 - 3000 rpms just normal driving sounds fine, more or less. The knock seems to be rpm/speed based (CV?), but sounds much closer than the engine. I'll go disconnect the hose from the diaphram and see if I can move it that way, but at this point it doesn't look like it'll work too well. EDIT:// Just tried the hose disconnect and still got nothing. I'll see if I can get it to move under low pressure (Don't have any type of pumps/compressors around me currently)
  5. I haven't really posted in a while. Mainly due to work and family issues. I think I've isolated part of my performance problem. The wastegate, I do believe it's quite stuck. I can't get it to move with the car running or not. Feels like it's cemented in place. I was wondering what my options were. Is it possible to unbolt the turbo and un-stick the waste gate myself? Or is it better to see if I can take it in and have it done? Right now money is real tight and I want to get it taken care of asap (and for as cheap as possible). For those that don't remember, some time ago my car developed a knock. It sounded like it had weight behind it and I had a drop in power. The knock sounded like it came from the tranny area and would sound off on a hard left and quiet down on a sharp right turn. Then there was the lack in power. Now I had just before that point attached a temp exhaust system (from where the cat fell off back) at which point it sounded a bit better and drove just fine from before. Sorry if I haven't given enough information or even given too much. I'm not a mechanic per se, and with turbo set up's I'm even newer. So I mostly play by ear. Thanks in advance for any help!
  6. The real issue isn't how much or how far one should take an EA82. He'll take it as far as he wants. If he doesn't want an EJ swap oh well. If he does how much work in comparison would it be to do an EJ swap as opposed to upgrading the EA? I've been thinking about a swap myself (As I knew ahead of time that the EA82 was a dead end road for performance).
  7. So far I've only heard it when in gear, and there seems to be an effect on running performance (on the way back i did baby it). It didn't seem to have as much pep as before. The noise, loss of power and oil pressure don't seem fun.
  8. I went to go for a spin today and around 1/4 the way into my trip my coupe developed a knock. Not like broken rod or anything it comes and goes depending on engine speed and turn angle at speed. If I turn left it gets pretty bad but if I jerk right it goes away. If it's knocking and I hold in the clutch, it goes away, let it back in and it comes back (if i stay in gear that is). My oil pressure has also dropped to around 30psi from the normal 45psi or so. Then there's the chatter, sounds like a bunch of talking under the hood from both sides of the engine (tick of death?) Any ideas? This is a setback as I'm swamped with bills and may end up selling this one.
  9. Finally got off my duff and sought about exhaust. Previous owners had cut the exhaust off (just ahead of the cat) and left it, which is how I've been running it. Well, the exhaust fumes on top of the wretched smell inside of the car already were gagging me (seriously nasty). So I went to the local pick-a-part and found a good condition muffler (rare items I sez) with a good bit of line still attached (they cut the cat off) Snagged that for $16. I then went and got a piece of flexible pipe (2 1/8 ID) about 18 inches long fitted one end to where my down pipe was (or whatwas left of it) then to the rest of teh exhaust. Clamped 'er down and Huzzah! She sounds a bit better (this is a temp fix, still $23 exhaust isn't too shabby) Next is the windshield, which had it's previous life set as a target for a bb gun. Do you guys think an 87-89 wagon windshield would rest on it just fine? Saw one over there and it'll cost me $11 to get. and yes, I AM cheap due to bills eating my paychecks faster than I can cash 'em.
  10. Had my coupe @97 or so on flat ground (well kinds a lumpy) in a sprint against my friends Z28. I decided to let off as he was going around 110 past me XD. At that speed, the needle was still climbing steady. So, 115-120 seems plenty feasable to me.
  11. Had an issue not that long ago in my coupe. Was going down a stretch of freeway @65 (5 over) and saw a red something (Think it was a mazda) racing up and move over (passing someone behind me and then getting back over). The only issue is that, he did this THEN slowed way down. I gained nearly a half mile distance from 400 or so gap between him and my rear-end. So he floors it and looks like he's gonna try to get the setup on me for the same maneuver. He must have been doing atleast 90 to get to me. He slowed a bit and ran next to me for a short bit (probably sizing up the next junker to slowdown). The only problem with my "junker" is it moves.....quick. I hear his auto kick down as he starts to accelerate. I decided to play his game, I dropped into fourth gear and laid into the boost. He acclerated half decent up to around 80 then I kept acclerating. I was doing 104 by the time I realised I had atleast 200ft lead on him and let off the gas. He flew by STILL trying to out run me XD, by the time he actually passed (at maybe 90?) I was already on the off ramp. Best part? 16-17 year old kid with a baseball cap (solid black type) backwards and a white tank top ahaha. Forgot to mention, mostly empty freeway takes it home.
  12. If yer near Olympia I'll sell ya my 87 GL, FT4wd turbo, insides are a little messy and rough, and it needs new exhaust, it's ugly too (kicked in door, only one major spot of rust, hood is fugly). I want to keep working on it but I just discovered $600 of debt :\
  13. I decided to go for a spin in it today. 60 miles overall, cruising at 75. No problems, ran like a champ. I'll see about new exhaust when I can afford it as I have $1000 in bills and $400 check :\
  14. So...best bet for more power is more boost, and for the long run a new engine. I like those odds! Eheh... So You guys think that .7 bar would over power my injectors? (roughly 10lbs of boost) I don't mind running a little lean either, better gas mileage is always a bonus XD
  15. Was afraid it'd be crank, Doesn't matter, still scoots faster than most cars around here. I would like to do some dyno runs, but the closest place that can run all four wants $90 a run :\
