  1. Get a 95 2.2 AUTO (with EGR). Resael it (cam, crank, baffle) new timing compnenet set, install, be happy! A 96,96 2.2 for instance will also work buy you'll need it's matching Ypipe.W elcome to the USMB!
  2. I downloaded the FSM from a link from a member and I had notes in the garage on the head bolt torque sequence and lbs and cam cap specs.. I haven't done one recently enough to remember what they are.
  3. I've used both. CLickers I don't think are that accurate at such low ratings. And it was after I had snapped 2 bolts not realizing there were 2 different torque settings. IIR one for the 4 beefier bolts and one for the 2 closest the cam seal. On the plus side I did get me a spiffy new set of small EZouts! Still sucked!
  4. Wow - I'm not much of an electrical guy but I'd be afraid to replace the coil connector. And I'd think that could be th eproblem as it heats up. What cylinders misfire? Same side or opposing sides?
  5. Try MAF unplugged? Remember 2 coolant sensors. One for ECU, one for dash - IIR the dash is the simple spade under #3 intake. I believe those are CRAP coil packs. I had trouble with those so then I went to used Diamond coils - and I have atelast one of those left too. Remember coil pack off a lot of 2.2's works too if you happen to have any. Heck if a member lived close you could swap parts and see which parts the problem followed. Remember - when nothing makes sense look for the stupid simple stuff! And go back to scratch and start all over again diagnosing. Good luck.
  6. Folks have reported NGK plug wires to be o.k. I still go EOM myself. Ignitors very rarely fail - infact I stopped pulling them when I'd part cars. I should have a few if you need one though. Coil pack status? Try the spray bottle test? Often when they fail due to heat the crask opens up and the water bottle spray test can help confirm.
  7. That's more than I expected you to get out of the test...
  8. Unsure how you'd kill an alternator due to no torque wrench. I've done plugs on a 2005(maybe 2006) Impreza 2.5 SOHC. Mostly the usual deal. Patience. A lot of wierd common tools. I usually use a spark plug socket with a swivel built in. I believe I usually also use the shortest extension (a Snapon like maybe 1"), various combinations. Don't be afraid to use a way long extension to actually ge tthe ratchet out of the engine bay, SOmetimes washer bottle removal helps. FYI IMO those plugs will run well past the interval. But when built there is no anti-seize used. SO use some ont eh new ones, I also use dielectric grease on the plugs/wires.
  9. If it was being driven when idler failed things aren't looking so good. Have the HG's been done? Are you thinking of keeping the car? I used to sell a "I'm feeling lucky kit" I may have one or two left over. Or most parts anyways. Often a cam sprocket wil lshater too. FOlks are in denial and need a cam sprocket. I used to sell them the idler of their choice, a used timing belt, and a cam sprocket(or 2). So they could install teh parts and figure out just how screwed they are. Personally I've never seen a DOHC have a failure and skip time and NOT have valve issues. IIR the pass side usually crashes first. If you're gonna keep the car and HG's haven't been done now if your chance...
  10. The Outback is actually much easier than on an L due to the body lift. That wee little bit of extrs space makes a difference.
  11. If you're getting parts store hoses or Dayco for instance they usually get cut to fit. The hoses shoul dbe the same though 2.5 & 2.2.
  12. I've come to realize that I can use a Mutlimeter for 2 things. To set it on 20 volts to check batteries, and a setting I have marked to check resistance on my glow plugs on my VW's. All the other settings mean nothing to me. Or more accurately picking another setting and trying to use it just leads to frustration. Wiring and headliners are 2 things I learned years ago that I do not enjoy... Infact I just picked up my 90 S10 with 37k from getting a new headliner and carpet this week. I would like to learn to rebuild starters and alternators some time, and that's as electrical as I'd like ot get. But I always have throttle bodies around so I just swap those out. And it's easy for those of us who are challanged by the multi-meter.
  13. As a side note I'm not the greatest electrical guy. I just swap the throttle body - it's easy and simple. I can have that done while I'm still trying to figure out what setting to use on the multimeter. So you may want to think of this as an option.
  14. Welcome to the USMB. You'll be awful lucky if a thermostat fixed your troubles! And an OEM thermostat is best. See if it has OEM plug wires. If not IMO start there. Also folks tend to overspend on spark plugs. Like if they are Bosch Platinums throw them as far as you can... Those cars have external cooland leaks usually so look where you park for a little fluid. Actually they usually start on drivers side between cyl 2 & 4 onto the cross member where it's difficult to see.
  15. If it makes you feel any better most 2.2 HG failures I've seen are the more traditional white smoke like most engines. Not SUbaru's perversion of HG issues.
  16. Maybe a better response later - but tight! They kinda bottom out and get tight all of a sudden. From the factory they are real tight. I've hit myself in the forehead and face many times when they finally break loose.
  17. I'm guessing that you'll have little to no takers. Unless you're a magazine/blog/whatever they have no incentive. ANd they figure if you really care to do a test you'll BUY the products to test.
  18. My only real "local" PIP went nuts a few years ago. Their prices are so high I can have items delivered from a regular JY for the same or less money. ANd they all stack the cars too close. They say they'll pull out a car you want. But that means a trip to the office. Then waiting ont eh operator who must have gone out for a beer and a smoke, etc.
  19. PM coming. I do have 2 97 complete heads from a real clean engine. Cams, caps, bolts, the whole deal if needed. If not the rest will go to Ebay. Those fine folks gave me 400k free listings until 6/23. I gotta say I'll never get 100 items listed. If anyone here knows someone who is used to Ebay or has a method to not use listings that haven't been active for over 30 days so they don't need retyped and stuff like that please PM me. I've got hundreds, maybe thousands of parts for Subaru and VW's that need listed. I was hoping to find a high school kid off for the summer or something but no luck yet.
  20. FYI I usually sell heads for close to 300 pair shipped - and a lto of that is shipping aqnd packaging. I believe the only ones on teh shelf now have teh valves out of them and the cams jsut setting in them - but I'll look tonight when I'm done outside.
  21. Lemme look tomorrow. My lift is tied up and that's what I put the engines on to tear down.
