  1. Junkyards around here would be hit or miss, as i live in the rust belt, and i have never seen one that wasnt all rusted around the lock bolts where it bolts to the bottom of the shift lever. I probably could just buy the lever and cable assembly from one of the local yards, but if i have to adjust it at all, it will probably snap by those two bolts.
  2. I would prefer not to use ebay, as i have lost money buying on there in the past, but thank you for the lnk and the help.
  3. I was just wondering if asnyone knew of a place online i could get a new shift cable for a 1999 legacy l wagon, with an automatic. I have searched all my usual places, and so far noone lists one, and i know the stealership is going to want a fortune. I changed the trans in it, and when i went to take it for a test drive, the cable snapped, so now im on a hunt for one. Either send me links if anyone knows of a place, or let me know if you might have one hanging around you want to sell.
  4. Where i live in NY, that would be a steal for that price. I have seen Imprezas and Legacy's in much worse shape around here for over 3k, and most of those need not only body work but mechanical work as well. The impreza in the pics they want 2300 for, and the legacy is listed for almost 3k.
  5. I know how they come out and go back in, i have taken a few of these transmission's apart, and put them back together, i just have never swapped front diff's from one to another.
  6. I work on mainly 94 to 99 automatic wagons, and everyone i have ever done an engine swap in, which is up to 7 this year alone, they were all EGR cars. I have never seen an automatic non egr car from those years.
  7. All automatic EJ22 cars are EGR, at least from 95 to 99.
  8. Actually, i dont have any money at all in either of those transmissions, because i got the car from a guy who was getting the divorce for 25 dollars, and then drove it for 8 months with the trans acting up, and the other trans i had given to me from a guy who needed a little advice swapping his EJ25 for an EJ22.
  9. I found that the front diff doesn't use a gasket, but where the pump mates up to the front of the trans does, and that was the gasket i needed. If you look at this diagram, it is part number 318, but to get it, you have to buy the entire gasket set, at a cost of around $200 shipped. http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/mm5/graphics/Catalog-pdf/EC8.pdf
  10. Both of them have the spin on filters, so i know they are both phase 2 transmissions, but i have heard that the gear ratios are different in the EJ22 cars, and the EJ25 cars, which is why im pretty sure all i have to swap is the front diff, but i didn't want to spend the time messing with it if there were other internal differences.
  11. The transmission is already out, because the pump went bad, so i was going to just swap the pump, but then i found out i need the gasket between the pump and the trans, which is extremely pricey, so i figured since i already have both trans out, and sitting side by side, if there were no other differences than the front diff's, i could just swap diff's between the EJ22 trans, and the EJ25 trans, but i want to make sure that is the only difference between the two of them.
  12. I found that gasket, from macko transmission, but its kind of pricey, and the trans im working on, the condition is unknown, so im thinking of just swapping it completely.
  13. I have a 1999 Legacy L wagon with an EJ22, with an automatic, and the transmission is going in it. The yards told me that i would have to get the trans from a 99 EJ22 only legacy, or a 99 to 01 impreza, but i have one from a 1999 legacy outback that had an EJ25 in it, so what i am wondering is, can i just swap the front diff from my car to the trans from the outback, and use that, or is there some other reason i cant use the outback trans?
  14. Subaru said they couldn't get them, except the complete kit, and opposed forces said they couldn't get it for anything after 98.
  15. I was going to post this in the transmission, brakes and axles forum, but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Anyway, i am searching for a couple of gaskets for a 1999 Subaru Legacy, with an EJ22, and an automatic. I have done several searches online, and noone seems to sell them separately, so i figured i would ask here. What i am looking for are the gasket that goes between the front diff, and the trans oil pump, and the gasket that goes between the trans oil pump and the trans itself. I have already done all the seals and stuff, so i don't want to spend 150+ just for those 2 gaskets, but all the shops around here say they can only get the gaskets in a complete set, so my question is, does anyone know anywhere that sells just those 2 gaskets?
  16. Thank you for the info. Now a couple questions, first, did you do anything else to the engine when you built it?, and second, wouldnt drilling the head gaskets hurt them in some way? Someone should make a lifesize template, and then people could print it out and use it.
  17. The knock sensor issue finally seems to be solved. I used the wiring and knock sensor from the old engine, and just replaced it at the engine wiring harness connector, so i didnt have to do any splicing.
  18. Im only looking into all the ins and outs of this build, because i now have 2 1999 EJ22 automatic cars, and while i know the EJ22 can last practically forever with minor maintenance, i thought it would be fun to do the frankenmotor, and then if one of my engines does go, or i happen on another cheap outback with a bad EJ25, i can drop that motor in it, and not have to always go to the local yards and hunt for one. Plus, i do like to mess with my cars, mainly off road, and have been known to blow an engine by not paying attention to what im running over. I now keep 2 spare oil pans, just for that reason.
  19. You must use the 2.5 head gaskets, get them from a Subaru dealer or get the updated Felpro three layer metal gaskets. You will have to drill additional water passages, helpful if you can lay a set of 2.2 head gaskets over them so you can match up the water passage openings. You have to pay attention to what heads you get. You'll need 1995 2.2 heads for the exhaust ports to match up, but depending on which transmission you have you may or may not have EGR. The donor will have to match. Thank you for the info. Is there a thread on here that shows how to drill the new heads, such as precautions and such? My car is an auto, so i know i need the EGR heads, and i already have the newer single port exhaust manifold on the car, because when the original EJ25 started pouring water out of various places, i dropped in a 1997 EJ22 that i took out of a wreck at a local yard, and dropped in my car.
  20. My thought was, so that i didnt have to dig into the cut wires on the car, it would just be easier to pull the harness off the old intake to put on the EJ22, but i didnt want to do all that until i knew for sure the old harness would fit the new intake. Either way i have to pull the intake off the EJ22, because at some point it has already been off the engine, and they somehow stuck the harness under the intake so that its not easily accessible.
  21. I have been searching here and on NASIOC, but i cant seem to find the answers im looking for to some simple questions, so could someone please direct me to threads that will either answer the questions i have for my exact scenario, or at the very least answer the few questions i have. Here is what i am looking for correct answers on, so i know what i need to order to get the engine i am working on done. I have a 1999 EJ25, that blew a head gasket at 78k, and i would rather use the heads from an EJ22, from 95 to 99, that im gonna source from a local yard that has a few of the EJ22's, than to mess with putting new head gaskets in the engine i have, so my questions are as follows: Do i use the EJ25 head gaskets, or the EJ22 head gaskets? I have read on some threads to use cometic gaskets, but i was trying to source all the parts from rock auto, so would fel-pro or victor reinz gaskets be better? And do i get the gaskets for the year of the engine i have, the 99 EJ25 if i need the gaskets for that engine, or is there a better year gasket for this combination? Do i use the EJ25 intake, or the EJ22 intake? And lastly, do i need a special t-belt and component set for this, or will the stock EJ22 t-belt and components work for what i am doing? I am not looking to build a high compression, or high revving engine, i am mostly looking for something i can maintain myself, without having to buy the tools needed to work on the EJ25.
  22. I have a 1999 legacy outback that had an EJ25 in it, but after a bunch of issues with it, i swapped it for a 1997 EJ22, that seems to run fine, but has a couple issues im still working out. My question concerns the wiring harness that is attached to the intake. The wiring harness on the EJ22 was cut at the knock sensor, in a way that makes it impossible to just rewire, so i am wondering if i can just use the intake wiring from the EJ25, or does it have to be from an EJ22? I live in NY, so i have to have the knock sensor installed so the CEL will go out for inspection. My other question is, can i just bolt the EJ25 intake to the EJ22? Also, would not having the knock sensor cause loss of power and hesitation issues at lower RPM's, or on steep hills, or would that be timing or vacuum related. I haven't checked the t-belt yet, as i haven't had time, but the car starts right up, and seems to run ok, except it seems to use a bit more gas than my other 99 with an EJ22 does, but once it gets past around 1900 RPM's, the power seems to come back, and it will wind out to around 80 MPH or so, without any hesitation at all.
  23. I have swapped the 2.2 from a 95 auto car into a 98 legacy gt wagon, so it should work.
  24. I was just curious as to what advantages and disadvantages i would find if i were to swap the heads from an ej22 to an ej25. Im concerned with swapping the heads from a 95 to 98 EGR car, to a 99 ej25 block. I keep hearing conflicting ideas about it. Some say it would be less power than a ej25, some say it would be more. And i have also been told i would need special head gaskets to do that kind of swap, but then others say i wouldnt. I have a 99 ej25 that im taking out of my 99 obw, and replacing with a ej22, but there is no knock in it, and even with a bad head gasket or two, no noticeable loss of power, and i have a ej22, that blew the bottom end, but the heads are still in good shape. I want to build the motor for a streetable car, and since i live in NY the MIL would have to be off.
