Jdm?
afterbang replied to ScoobyWho's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
i feel the reason why these engines have rod bearing failure is that they get abused due to the repeated overheating when the head gaskets do fail. people keep driving the cars because the overheating is intermittent and over time it just destroys the engine. i had a buddy who kept overheating his 99 legacy and when the headgaskets were finally replaced he experience rod bearing failure less than 10k afterwards. same thing also just recently happened to a neighbor of mine who drove to work for 3 months until finally getting around to doing a HG job. I would however still put an EJ22 in over an EJ25d any day. My wife's 93 has been so good to us in comparison to the money ive put into my 98. -

the jdm ej25d may not have the port in the driver's side head for the egr valve pipe. if that's the case and you're state requires no check engine lights to pass inspection/emissions, you may screw yourself over. -
i have a ticking coming from the driver's side only after warm up. it's not loud but i do notice it when im in drive thrus where the sound is bouncing back. i had a valve adjustment done when GD did the timing belt/reseal/clutch job on my 98 outback and it didn't make the sound go away. after using a stethoscope he thinks that it is just the fuel injector. i listened to it too and i'm pretty sure he is right. i guess you could always just unplug the injector to see if that relieves it but i personally really didn't care to bother.

thanks everybody for the replies. i just needed to know if they were mechanically the same. ive had a loyale and my wife has a 93 legacy so i know the difference between the two. im just talking about how the headlights, grill and im guessing the bumper are different in the very first legacys that were put out compared to the 92-94. i wasn't sure if those were the only differences. hopefully we will be adding another subaru to the family here in the next day or two.

so my parents are looking for a subaru for my younger brother as a first car. a friend of theirs has a 1990 legacy for next to nothing thats going to need a few things here and there. are the 92-94 legacys the same car but with just a different front end? just needed to know for junkyard scavenging reasons. thanks.

You found a good friend crossing paths with Rick. He has helped not only keep my daily driver running, he's also let me spend days in his garage letting me watch over his shoulder so I can attempt to learn a fraction of what he knows about subarus. Fair and honest with charging for his services and his work is meticulous. You should have seen how many shortcuts and possibly catastrophic mistakes that a respected Subaru shop in my area made that were found when my engine was pulled. Finding my timing belt tensioner bolts barely finger tight was pretty rad. Good thing the belt was still fresh!

you can use the factory crossbars that are on (or were on) your car and use products like yakima's mighty mount adapters to attach racks or cargo boxes to what is already on your roof. this saves a ton of money over buying towers and crossbars that attach to the factory mounts. i personally use the aftermarket towers and crossbars because i feel they are more secure and my mountain bike is worth about as much as my legacy.

I am glad I read this thread and the ones that were linked in it. my wife and i have been going back and forth about getting a newer subaru and it so happened that a family member had an 08 outback that she was looking to get rid of. that's pretty scary stuff. since all the cars essentially use the same platform with a different shell on it, i don't see why it is so specific to one model.

here ya go: http://www.1stsubaruparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=63&products_id=403&osCsid=a88fbe0b4cb269c9505646d699115ad0 you could get new plug wires too if yours are really old but i wouldn't replace a coil pack unless you knew it was bad. getting any misfire codes? run some 1/3 a can of seafoam in the gas and 1/3 down a vacuum hose that feeds all four cylinders. using a baby bottle to slowly feed the seafoam in works really well. that and the tune-up kit should smooth things out a bit.

with the help of GD i have taken care of my puking power steering pump. just wanted to share the solution with you all. these kits are out of stock at most vendors so i had to wait a bit for it to arrive but it's worth the wait. this specific kit is for 95-99 legacys. http://www.amazon.com/Edelmann-8832-Power-Steering-Pump/dp/B001KOZ1C2 after getting it apart we ran over to napa and picked up an "alternator bearing" to really do it up right. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=PGBP62032RSJ_0006379889 grand total: $21.99 and my power steering pump is now bone dry.

hey everyone. i have a 98 legacy outback that i have been driving for the past 7 years. ive been driving up to 80 miles a day lately and have been having some serious lower back pain while driving. funny thing is, when i drive my wife's 93 legacy the discomfort isn't anywhere close in severity. anyone on here with my generation outback have the same problem? ive been thinking about trying to put some money aside to buy some front seats out of a newer model subaru but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions about the problem. i know it's a weird question but i figured i'd throw it out there before i potentially waste money on seats that offer no help. thanks guys.

this past weekend i got to take a ride in a board member's brat that had the frankenmotor in it with torque cams and it was pretty ridiculous. that is definitely my next project after learning how straight forward and relatively cheap it is to do. i know the legacy weighs quite a bit more but for gaining power and keeping reliability without a turbo, it seems to be a no brainer.

the following should be finished tomorrow: timing belt w/ new tensioner and all idlers, new waterpump, reseal oil pump, crank and cam seals, new clutch kit and flywheel, valve adjustment, new valve cover gaskets, updated oil separator plate, new rear main, pretty much every hose, and some other needed love. the credit goes to GD and it has been awesome watching and learning from him. really helped me and the family out on this one.

this weekend im having a clutch job done by a board member here. i went with the exedy clutch kit off of amazon.com for $142.00 and purchased a subaru flywheel for $200.00 from 1stsubaruparts.com. It took me a while to figure this out but exedy doesn't make an oe flywheel for the phase 1 dohc engines (guessing this is what you have from your avatar). if you have a 2.2L you can get the exedy flywheel for under $100 dollars. i was able to have a family member who lives by the dealership that runs 1stsubaruparts.com pick up my order so that saved me a little bit of money but it's usually just 10% of your order for shipping. the exedy clutch kit had free shipping. i know which kit you're looking at w/ the lightweight flywheel and those on here with experience talked me out of it.

im about to order up a complete timing belt kit and seals. it just dawned on me that when my engine was swapped in my 98, if a 96-97 dohc ej25 was put in it could have the older tensioner. does anyone know if i can remove the driver's side timing belt cover to check? it looks from pictures it may be covered by the center cover. thanks for your help.

my current one has close to 200k and has been resurfaced twice. I was told that you don't want to resurface them more than a max of two times. I'm going to look into a used one but was hoping someone had an aftermarket brand in mind that I could purchase new if I don't have luck getting a used one to resurface in a reasonable amount of time. also, buying a used one and then paying to resurface sounds like it could be more than going new. I was planning on purchasing a new clutch kit and flywheel this week. thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

98 legacy outback dohc. this is the answer I got from exedy. I really don't want to spend 200 on a new subaru flywheel. any other brand recommendations? Matthew, Thank you for your interest in Exedy products. Unfortunately we do not offer a flywheel for your application. The FWSBL01 is for the 2.2L non-turbo. *** Sincerely, Evan Cline Technical Coordinator-Aftermarket http://www.exedyusa.com 800-346-6091 ex633 734-397-6633 direct
