Wagonstien taking fully independent suspension to the next level
SmashedGlass replied to Ioku's topic in Members Rides
So here's a noobish question then. Do the 2" and 4" lifts by, say, SJR create alot of bump steer problems when you are daily driving? As I understand it (limited knowledge of lifting at this point...) those kits are technically just body lifts. When I get around to mildly lifting my wagon, I really don't want to have to fiddle with geometry and still want a decent in-town/highway driveability. -
Shoot, you could probably offer to hack it out of that jungle surrounding it and get it for services-rendered My latest two tasks were removing the crappy home applied purplish window tint from the rear hatch that the PO had on the wagon, and exhaust repairs. Had to wrap the crap out of the drivers side manifold to Y pipe junction, as there no longer was a junction lol, and used some VersaChem Muffler weld on some pinholes and cracks around the front pipe hanger bracket.

No, I noticed it as soon as I got it home after purchase, I'm just really slowly sussing out all of the little repairs I have to do, as I'm not quite on the road with it yet. I know that the 4Lo works (crawled it up a nearby road hill last week) and would assume that 4Hi works too. I'll dig into the switches this week to check them, as I'm not up to pulling the dash apart AGAIN just yet. The switches are located under the shift boot, yes? On a separate note, from the on-going exhaust repairs.... it appears I have NO O2 SENSOR?! As in, strangely, there isn't even a bung on the cat/Y pipe for one, and a cut orange wire to a connector atop the tranny. Oh well, runs fine enough

Is it feasible to replace my fuel filter with one of the "universal" inline filters as opposed to the one specifically for the EA82? The "correct" filter costs an ungodly frikkin $20 @ Autozone/OReillys/AdvAuto, the uni inline is only about $4...

When manifolds go bad!
SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is on an spfi EA82, the dual port leggie manifold wont work. But thanks for the offer. -
Last month in our local p'n'p, my friend and I came across a 1gen Legacy that had been consigned to the scrap yard for......... a snapped timing belt. And that's all. It's frustrating to see cars that people just don't want to take the time to do simple repairs on end up that way. [if I'd had the $$$, that ej22 would be in my backyard right now]

Here's the newest situation in my Sube's odyssey: Went to repair a leak in the exhaust system today using one of those tape-and-resin cheapie kits (pin holes around the front hanger plate) and also to get a look-see at a minor bit of leakage at the Y pipe. After removing the heat shield for that (well....destroying it off, damn bolts) and loosening the manifold bolts......... the left side manifold pipe had cracked all the way round where it meets the Y pipe junction and I now had a two-piece Y pipe Question is, where would I get another Y pipe? They don't seem to be available anywhere I looked online. I'm assuming everyone just goes and grabs one out of the pull'n'pay? Welding is out, looks as if it had been re-welded once before this. She'll be okay for the time being, I wrapped the ************ out of the break with the kit and used ALL the resin on it, and it seems alright (no more puffing from that location), will hit the original leak further down the piping tomorrow.

Scott from SJR actually did respond to an email from me on the "no longer listed" 2 inch lift kit. He said there wasn't enough demand, but that he CAN still make them.

Wife Wrecked My 88 Subaru GL
SmashedGlass replied to MCS88GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There are about ten in just ONE of my local P'n'P yards here in Colorado. Repair parts are plentiful, if you're willing to front the cost of having to ship them. Real bummer on having had it get whacked....... Ban the wife from driving it or your next Sube?? -
Need a 'remote' diagnoses on front end
SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's about how we do the races on military equipment, only either using brass drift pins or humongous sockets..... seems the Army can never supply us lowly mekniks with the 'proper' specialized tools for the job. It's an '88 GL 4wd D/R wagon btw. -
Need a 'remote' diagnoses on front end
SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it possible to do the bearings without taking the hub into a shop to have them pressed out/in? I've done bearings and races on tanks and HMMWV's without access to a press before, but perhaps there's something particularly hard about the old Sube's?? -

SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's what I figured; hub was pretty hot after the 24mi drive from picking it up last month. I'lll order up some bearings Good point on the wheel though. That one seems fine but does have a dinged lip. May be a combo of the bearings + wheel balance. -
My wagon has been making a strange noise from the front end since I bought it, sort of "growling" at me from the passenger-side (as best I can tell while driving) becoming noticeable at speeds above 30+ or so and at around 50mph it has a rythmic quality to it. I had her jacked up with the front wheels off yesterday to check things out and could find no evidence of bearing play, a destroyed CV, or damage to the rotors. The previous owner had already replaced the drivers-side CV and bearings (at least, there were receipts for a shop pressing them in).... So I'm a little stumped as to the exact problem, and leery of purchasing parts I may end up not needing to repair it at the moment. I'm still leaning towards the bearings going out, what do those of you with more experience on the older Sube's have for advice?

L/F grille emblem from 3 door Sube
SmashedGlass posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I acquired a grille from a GL-10 3dr hatchie in my P'n'P today to replace my mangled wagon grille, but someone had already absconded with the emblem; it appears the emblem off of the wagons is a tad smaller and slightly different in shape. Anyone have one they could part with? -
Oh, where to start? -replace CV shaft, with new bearings: let's fail to properly grease pack them... -let's allow a vinyl-eating pitbull puppy to co-habitate while we're out on camping trips.... -hey, we need a new exhaust! but apparently we don't need to use new exhaust gaskets!?!... -i have an idea! let's make it look cool by spray-bombing everything from the trim line down with cheap rattle can flat black! (and touch-up paint the red...OVER the other trims and emblems)... and a personal pet peeve, while even just catching a ride in someone else's car: -let's use the interior as a trash bin and never clean it out! the fresh Colorado air will mask all odors! in all seriousness, i guess my purchase isn't that bad, these are minor gripes and expected problems with a 23yr old car that's been 'properly' used. there's virually no rust and very few body panel dings, she's runs well, and the 4hi/lo works

Cleaning a cruddy interior...
SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks, I'll give Murphy's a shot sometime in the near future. For now, I'm going to see what Meguir's Back To Black (for exterior trim!) does to it. -
Sube sending Indian smoke signals?
SmashedGlass replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lol no, I know a cracked head. Once owned an RX.... That would've been giant clouds of white smoke, if it would run at all. This car is running absolutely fine, just that my buddy said he saw a little puff once in awhile while decelerating. Checked over some things just now [again]. Oil is good, no contamination. Can't tell on the coolant as it's low in the surge tank, there is some gunk residue in the tank but it probably just needs a flush. I don't trust that the previous owner did regular maintenance, only failure fixes, like the cv and exhuast. Need to grab a compression test kit sometime this week as part of my full technical inspection work up. I could just be paranoid. But just because I am, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me -

Sube sending Indian smoke signals?
SmashedGlass posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
According to my friend who followed me home when I picked the Sube up, once in awhile it would puff a bit of white smoke from the exhaust, we think when I would downshift to decelerate. Is this a bad omen?
