Hello an Help Requqest!
The Dude Abides replied to SubaruZach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Man just looking over your car youve got about 500 bucks worth of parts there. 100 for the lsd 100 for the rear brakes 150 or more for the rx body kit 100 or so for the awd tranny You could make up for the rest with the interior parts, hood, grill. Ill take some of those parts off your hands if you want. You would be better off with the yota in the background of your first pic. -

GD I love you Your about as suttle as a mack truck on fire with a load of naked girls on the back. Sadly though hes right. You do a search under turbo and your going to find a ton of headgasket problems. One thing i didnt want to do when i was 17 is work on my car all the time. I wanted to cruise and pick up chicks. That car is worth more parting it out then you could possibly get out of it. Listen to the older people on here. Not me the people whove been doing this for years. You want a sporty subaru get an impreza, you want a reliable one, get a legacy, you want a cheep one get a loyale. But dont start off with a turbo in the beginnings of your subaru upbringing, it will leave a bad taste in yoru mouth. Ben -
Is yours the auto, Maybe you know this or not but these arent very powerful cars also, especially if you have the auto. a 200hp stock iroc is gonna seem like a supercar to a 89hp subaru. Also guys do some research because if your going to change the pcv valve you really need to go to oem equipment on this one. Will save you headaches in the long run. Just pull the pcv valve off the car and shake it. If it rattles its good. Spray it with some cleaner reguardless if it rattles or not and all should be good in that area. I was kinda in the same boat as you guys on these cars. Just like any chevy or ford, just replace and go. But these are different, sometimes the parts you need to replace are expensive so a good cleaning is all it needs.

Have you tried cleaning the iac, look it up. I have over 200 thousand and my maf is fine. Things just get dirty guys, think simple before complicated. Look up the iac then theres some type of idler sensor also. Ben

Brakes Grindeing
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Man its gettin bad now. I cant believe i didnt have any indication that they were startin to go. When me and mick did the ball joints (mosty mick:D ) i saw they were low but not that worn. Im gonna need to replace atleast one rotor at this rate. Theyve already started wearing a groove in there. I thought i could pry some xtra bucks from the ole lady so i could convert the rears to disc but with the wheel bearing howling, timeing belt tensioners on the fritz and a clicking axel on the drivers side i think ill keep it on the cheep side. Brakes Grindeing
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just checked there not there anymore. I looked yesterday and they were there today they wernt. Ben -
Yea so driveing home and i hear that sound where you know your brakes are going. Funny thing is that they never gave any indication they were going. Fine one day then grindeing. So im going to replace pads and rotors. Ive read some writeups on what some people put on. Has anyone put the brembros on. What pads did you put with them. Man when it rains it pours for subaru repair, might need to sell my mazda wheels to fund it. Ben

Funny Noise
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like a very good possibility to me. Its on the side of the motor where there are no visibal pullys and it seems to be coming from the motor. If this thing grenades is the motor done for or do i need to do a timeing belt kit. Ben -
Just curious of you folks have heard of this one. Just noticed it today. When your faceing the motor from the front. A whirling noise coming from the left side. I dont see any pumps or pullys. I dont know if its the belt makeing this noise, or timeing belt, or if this is the famous tick of death but its not ticking like explained it sounds like whirling. Any thoughts. Ben

speedo swap possible?
The Dude Abides replied to crazylong127's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do what i do. Just embrace the dl for what it is. Does yours have the passanger side mirror delete. Ben -
Welcome to the board. Nunb is right, this is the best source to find what your asking about. One of the problems you are going to find is. A. Atleast in the midwest cars like ours arent very abundent or if you find them there rustbuckets B. Most things you can find for simple upgrades are even harder to find. Xt6 stuff is expensive and nay impossible to find in the midwest, and to ship them from our fellow bretheran in the pacific northwest is expensive. C. Some people might say that the car you have isnt the best. Not that it doesnt look good or probally run good but that it isnt 4wd. From what ive read alot of modification needs to be done if you were going to convert one from 2wd to 4wd. Well why would you want 4wd you ask. Because the impreza stuff with alittle finess go into these vehicles. Im under the impression though that its harder if your starting off with a 2wd vehicle. First thing i would do if i were you is get it running tip top. HOw many miles are on your car. Then go from there. Wheels will be hard to find but there out there. Look up pugs. Any other help needed just ask. Ben

Mazda Wheels, Now What?
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
in the midwest subies are a rairty in the junkyard. Is there a way i could knock out 2 studswith the hub still on the car then put them back in after ive checked it. Ben -
So i picked up these mazda b2000 wheels with tires for 50 bucks which isnt bad. But im looking at the depth of these things. About 6 inches and im thinkin there going to stick out. The guy said they sat on his truck fine but im having a hard time not seeing them stick out on my 88 dl wagon. These dont look like factory truck wheels they are more like these http://www.uswheel.com/wheel.cfm?category=65 14 x 6 Also the only way i guess to really be sure is to throw them on right. Well easier said than done. Either i drill out the wheel and possibly destroy getting my money back. Or takeing the time to disasemble my car and drill out those holes to see if that works. Putting my car out of comission Any Advise. Ben

Glad things worked out ok. Wish i would of been able to come and help but u know how it goes. Yes mick is a devoted subaru man, he is way to giving of his time. Im sure there is a linkage adaptor or something people use on here since there are so many lifted rigs. You would think when they enginered those lifts they would compensate for any types of customization. What are u talking about trimming. Fenders or the inner wheel well. Ben
