For head unit i think ill go for whatever name brand is cheepest. Other then dual. How about speakers what size are the ones in the door. 6 or 6 1/2 but again this is all speculation because i need car parts first and foremost. Yea Mcbrat is going to help me with the balljoints and i guess i assume its going to be both sides:) i guess well see what happens. IM going to put the money into my car there are no 2 ways about it. At the very least ill get 1 cv shaft that way ill be prepaired when one goes bad on the front. Probally try to straighten out the 4wd system. Maybe buy a muffler ohh that would be nice. West Des Moines folks dont like loud subie. Ben

well there are certain repairs that need to be made. The ball joint is going out on that side. I just figured with it apart go ahead and go crazy. I guess i was just trying to capitalize on a product that was on sale is all. Honestly if i keep the money i might just buy garbage with it. At least if i bought the axels when they did go out i wouldnt half to be stuck with finding the money then. As far as vibrating i dont know. I swear when im turning and i go from 1st to second feels like either the engine is gonna jump out of the car or the front end is gonna jump off the car. Needs to be roadtested buy a suburu guy who can sence what is troubling the car. Ben

Lets face it a subaru is no sports car. She aint no ws6 trans am. But i was passin every high dollar suv during the ice storm:banana: But yes im going to keep it. If the engine blows ill get another, tranny same thing. Only if the body rusts away will i get rid of it. But then ill just get another suburu like this and take the good parts off of this one. The passanger side cvshaft is fine, no noises. No the wheel bearings arent howling but i believe that side is the one that my brother hasnt changed yet and since the darn thing was going to be apart anyways i figured y not. That is what ive always done. Maybe its bad but if im going to do one thing i might as well do it all. I hardly ever just change brake pads. If its the first time ive worked on the brakes on my car i replace everything i can pads, rotor, gear u name it. I figured since i had the ball joint and the cvshaft to do on that side i might as well do the bearings as well. And for alittle xtra practice and piece of mind just go ahead and do the other side that way i know the front end is in tip top shape. I would love to buy a cd player for my car. Maybe new speakers but those arent going to do me any good if the darn thing leaves me beside the road. If anything thats the first to get riped off.

Ive been give 150 bucks for christmas and i am debating on what to do with it. Im going to throw a andrew jackson to heartless cuz i oweher but the rest im puzzled. I have a cv shaft going out on my drivers side so im getting one of those reguardless butt........... Since there haveing that sale on gck axels im wondering if i shouldnt just get one for the other side as well while there on sale and i have the money. Im probally going to be replaceing some wheel bearings too but i dont know. I could save the xtra money for something else but since its free money and i need my car to work for me it makes sence to invest in its future. Any advise would be great. Ben

refinish the wagon wheels for Brat
The Dude Abides replied to bheinen74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you dont mind me asking where did you go to get ur wheel sandblasted and how much did it cost. Ben -
so your saying that subaru never intended on speakers being in the hatch of a wagon. Well that fine but the previous owner before my family had some installed in there. Cut holes through the plastic and everything. The wireing is currently there as well. I took apart the rear door panel to bang out a dent and i saw the space for speakers but i dont recall seing any slits through the actual door pannel itself. If i do get this it will be a christmas present so i guess doesnt matter about speaker kind or size. I just wanted to put them in the hatch because the setup is already there. Ben
-
sorry what i ment was has anyone put the 6 1/2s in the rear hatch and how do they sound. I know how 6 x 9s sound but just curious how the 6 1/2s sound. I can hack into my hatch that isnt the problem just dont want to make it to entisive for thevery. Ben
-
yea my struts arent that good so it wont hold up. I am curious as to if anyone even has the speakers in there rear hatch and if they sound ok. I dont mind rewireing i guess just wanting to see some results. I think im going on ebay and getting some cerwin vegas. Say what you want but i had a pair of these in my eagle talon and they sounded great. Seem to have alittle more lows. But then again it will be a while before i can get anything. Ben
-
I have an 88 dl wagon and was wondering if anyone had tried putting 6.9 speakers in the rear hatch. The only reason i ask is because ihave a set of 6x9s now. I know about rewireing. The speakers in my car now are awful and would like some better sound with what ive got. Someone has already cut out holes for 61/2s in the rear hatch. Ben

4wd Not Working?
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes i have defrost and heat but it isnt very powerful but i think that has more to do with blockage in the vents and an old blower motor. I tried the engageing the 4wd and turning sharply in either directing. No clicking no bindeing nothing. So blah one more thing that needs checked on. Man haveing kids takes alot of time out of the simple things. Hey Mcbrat you better set aside some time for me please because weve got lots to go over:grin: Ben -
4wd Not Working?
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
theres a 4wd indicator light. I have a dl so i dont know if i have a light that lights up but try this. with the single range push button. We had snow and it was plowed in the parking lot. There was a drift pushed up on one of the parkings. I put the front end on the snow and the rear on dry pavement and pushed the 4wd button. The front tires just spun nothing from the back. Something pooped out on me. Or never really was working right when i got it. Ben -
What is a surefire way i can tell if my 4wd is working. First off i only have the pushbutton so its single range only. We had this bank parking lot buy our apartment and it was a sheer ice, smooth as glass. Anyways took the suby up to it to double check the 4wd. Put it in neutral engaged it and hit the gas. Looked out the drivers door and the tire wasnt spinning. But the thing is i feel it kinda bog down, like its in a lower gear. Any suggestions. Ben

Hello! (New Guy)
The Dude Abides replied to rallyxPOS13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome To The Board I used to have a 89 BMW 635 CSI with the rear cooler and thehydraulic assistance and everything. I got it cheep but man that thing had problems, was fun to drive though. Did about 140 on the freeway (in the middle of nowhere naysayers) Youve got a good car there. Should be great enough in the whinter. These are quirky cars sometimes but people on here have been through it all and know how to help you. If you want straight up no nonsence reliability just stick with the motor youve got. Ive got 200 thou on my clock but people on here have up to 300. Welcome to the world of Subaru Ben -

The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well like i said i have been a good boy and kept driveing to a minimum and off the freeway. I guess i just dont have a choice when it comes do needing my car. I apreciate the offer though means a lot. And i think i will take you up on your previous offer but since i live in an apartment maybe we can arrange you to send it to mcbrats house. I have some parts i need to pick up over there anyways. Would half to clear it through him first. ben -

The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No the stereo fit in there fine. It just likes the most advanced wireing back in 1995 and definately needs updated. Will probally get a different radio when i have some money and straighten out my front end situation. Ben -
Blower Motor
The Dude Abides replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The front end has not been sorted out yet. Ive been just bideing my time and staying off the freeway not driving it other then to work. I should be getting some money for christmas so ill be buying all the parts i need. Maybe i can convince a certain iowa brat guy to possibly help me sort out my cvshaft, wheel bearing, ball joint issue. Ben -
So while i was tinkering on the car in the parking lot i decide to remove my stereo because its shorting out, turning itself off, getting all staticy. Its an aftermarket stero buy they way cirga 1995 so i already have the aftermarket install kit. I pull it out and holy god it was a mess of wires. It looks like it was professionally installed though but ive never seen all these wires like that before. Ill take a picture so you can further see what im talking about. My question is that were there stereo wire adaptors back in 1995 for these cars or is this more then likely something someone hacked up. The wire loom where the stereo wires are coming out of has alot of wires that have been just cut off. There not exposed or anything just cut. Any help would be great. ben

My blower motor is on the fritz. I said before i was going to take it apart and see what the deal was because it was whirling alittle loud and airflow was not that great. Well it has replaced the loud whirling with a even louder screeching. Im assumeing its going out, so my question is this. Since living in iowa the subaru stockpile isnt that great i have a couple choices. Buy from parts store but i have no idea how costly this will be. Find an old used one from someone here. Or do i take it apart greese the hell out of it and hope for the best. It does still currently work though but the screeching is unbearable and its iowa and almost december so its coooold Ben

1988 Subaru Wagon ?
The Dude Abides replied to cole098's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
youd be better off finding a dual range ea82 manual trans to drop in. lord knows theres plenty to be found and from what i heard les headaches. I have the push button 4x4 on my 88 dl wagon and will be converting to dual range when my tranny goes out. We had a bit of a snow storm here last week and i finally had the chance to try out my 4wd. Had to say it did great. Definately a difference with front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive mode. Even after the snow melted and froze backinto ice i had much much better traction on the ice with 4wd engaged. Dual range is nice but if its a daily driver might not be necessary. The only reason i will change it is because as long as im there might as well do what i want. Ben -
are you able to do that on any other subaru Ben
-
i had that problem on my 88 dl with the quad headlight setup. I came to findout that i had the original lights from the factory. I replaced them with sylvania silverstars. They are bright white lights not blue. Those are buy far the only headlights i will ever use. You dont need to convert anything over. Its strictly a plug and play system. I can see 10 times better then i originally could. On top of that i replaced them in my minivan after one of the factory ones burnt out. They are much brighter then any factory light other then the expensive car lights. HID I believe Ben
