'85 Toyota is officially mine!
markjw replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
Nice! A real survivor. The last of the "Real" Toyota trucks. I bought a 'Really nice '86 in '89. I had no idea of the problems I was gonna have with the IFS. Man,I'd be for restoring that thing. -
Where can I find a speedo cable for a EA81 4spd DR
markjw replied to Rally_Blue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found this one at Schucks. I'm not a big fan of Schucks, but I do like Cheap. http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=DOR&MfrPartNumber=03244&PartType=683&PTSet=A -
Clutch doesn't quite work(5 speed swap)
markjw replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think the idea is to use the ea81 flywheel,ea82 friction disk and ea81 pressure plate. I think. I don't quite understand what combination you are using. -
Yes..Scrap steel is way down from the crazy prices of two summers ago. I think the peak was $550 a ton. It's $65 a ton right now. So,yeah,it's way down.

If you do decide to reseal the oil pump, you might consider leaving off the timing belt covers. In fact, take the time to remove the cam sprockets and get the backs off too. It absolutly changes a guys whole attitude about maintaining the front components of your ea82 engine.

Hmmmmmm.....That Really Sucks. The place is amazing. I could roam around in there for hours. The prices were always fair. The old man,Jimmy Junk, was quite a charecter. All the other employees would weigh whatever you wanted to buy. Not Jimmy. He would look you in the eyes almost as if he was trying to guage how much money you had in your pocket. Maybe I'll drive by there today and see whats crackin. The place is Huge and all that scrap didn't evaporate.

J&J Metals. Over by the Tumwater airport. I heard the old man passed away earlier this year but,his son was gonna continue the business. I haven't been there in a while. Maybe worth a look. 912 73rd Avenue SE, Olympia, WA 98501

More than likely some of the compression rings were frozen/rusted into the grooves. I've run into this before. Seems the tell tale sign is really weird compression readings. Like zero to over a hundred and back to zero. Some marvel oil into they cyl. and put the plugs back in and crank for all its worth. It forces the oil past the rings and eventully they free up. If you can get it to start, they have no choice but to free up all the way. At least thats been my experience on a couple cars that have sat for a long time. -
Get an Oil Pump Reseal kit at the parts store ($20) and reseal the pump. Beyond that,I wouldn't do anything. Did you install new OEM Cam tower O-Rings when you did the HG's?

I messed with that screw a while back. And, regretted it. I had all the bad idle issues your talking about and I could never quite get it set right. I did actually get it really close to where it was tolerable, but,of course,I messed with it again, and made it worse. Very worse. It's only function,as far as I know,is to keep the throttle plate from sticking in the intake bore. If the throttle plate goes to a flat,90 degree horizontal position, and is allowed to cool, like your car sits overnight, then you come out to start your car in the morning, the plate will be siezed in the boar. The set screw is designed to keep the plate a couple degrees off horizontal so it doesn't do that. The plate can become so seized in the boar that it will actually destroy your throttle cable as your pumping on the gas pedel wondering why the heck the gas pedal feels weird. I know 'cause this is what finally happend to me before I "fixed" the problem. In the end,I went to the wrecking yard and found a throttle body that hadn't been messed with. You can tell a good one 'cause it will have dried white paint on the set screw that hasn't been disturbed. Thats what worked for me,anyway. Life is back to normal now. But,it was quite a horrible experience.

Best tire for 14" pugs with no lift or trimming?
markjw replied to AlPhil's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You need to stay under 25"....I had 25.4" tires on my '91 bone stock loyale, and they occasionally rubbed. Not bad,but any is too much. I went to a 24.4" and they are perfect. Use the Miata tire calculator (google it) or some other and just enter the numbers for the tires your interested in. If the Dia. is less than 25",you should be fine. 27's are out of the question, completly. -
I think the hatch's are going the way of the BRAT somewhat. But,they really need to be cherry. I sold a really nice one, like yours, to a guy back east for about $1400 and,he paid a grand to have it shipped out there. If you truly want to find the right market for your Hatch, you need to advertise it Nationally. I believe good ones are desireable to folks who have money to burn. That's who your looking for. All that said,I'll give you $40 for it.

Mounting Speakers in fron door panel
markjw replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Whaterver you do,don't half a$$ the job. It Has to be done with solid construction methods. The opening and closing of the door with the weight of the speaker will test your fasteners. If it's not right, the weight of the speakers will soon tear loose and leave you with a mess. Trust me. I know this. -

Well,it turns out it wasn't a blown headgasket after all. I was getting some really weird compression readings at first. I mean like 0 psi to 120 psi to 150 and then back to zero. Strange. So, I put some Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders and let it set for a couple weeks. I blew the oil out of the cylinders and was getting some decent compression. At least 120 psi on all four. I put the plugs back in and she fired right up. After driving around for a couple hours,I pulled it back into the shop. I'm getting 150 psi on all four cyl. Runs pretty good. Free Rice. -
Think its safe to re-install the Digi Dash??
markjw replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yup...I agree with Rob. Why risk it. They'r just too hard to find in working condition. Besides,if something was to happen to the digi-dash before the car goes to paint, it might instead be heading back to the Crusher. -
Yeah, man. Get your money back. Or,at least try. If you don't you'll more than likely have remorse. Besides, that price is how much I'd expect to pay for a freshly rebuilt Weber. With the problems your clone has, no way would I keep it.

Thats just sealent. Cam Tower Sealent,I think. It's suppose to be like that.
-
Well.I went to the yard and every ea82 vehicle there, regardless if it was a XT,GL or Loyale has the throttle cable with the lead ball and poly bushing on the pedal end. So,the one everybody is trying to sell me,big barrel lug on one end small barrel lug on the other, is incorrect. That one is absolutly for a ea81. So,here's what I have decided. New loyale throttle cables don't exist.
-
Well, nothing worked. I went to Schucks to pick up my new cable and it was diffrent. The end that attaches to the gas pedal on mine,'91 loyale, is a lead ball with a white poly bushing. The one Schucks had for a '89GL has a barrel style attachment like the other end that connects to the throttle body, but a little bigger. I called the dealer, too. They couldn't find one listed specifically for the '91 loyale:confused: And,the one they could get was also for the XT,all GL's and pretty much everything dating back to 1980. So,basically the same thing Schucks had. I think, anyway. I'm heading to the wrecking yard tomorrow. See what the deal is with these cables. I know the yard I have been going to lately pretty much has at least one of every model Subaru has made in the last 20 yrs. Except a brat.
-
That was it. How crazy is that? Past 1989,when the wagon becomes known as the Loyale,"no cable available". But,everybody has one for a '89 and earlier GL. Thanks,Man..
-
No...I didn't even think of that. I'll call and see if that changes anything. Thanks.
-
Seems everybody has a throttle cable for the ea81 vehicles.I'm wondering if that will work for me. So,I guess my question is,will the ea81 accerator cable work for a ea82 loyale?
-
I called a half dozen auto parts stores and looked at Rockauto. I can't find one for my '91 loyale, anywhere. It's not that they'r out. They are saying they can't get them. NAPA doesn't have it listed, either. I can go to the wrecking yard, but wanted to buy new. Anybody got a source for a new throttle cable? Other than the dealer.
-
You can also put a intake muffler on it. Seems I read somewhere that thats where alot of the noise comes from. I think it would work on a direct drive as well as a belted compressor.

I scored this neon off CL today. It was in the driveway of a house that a realtor lady had just sold. The owner of the house, and the realtor needed it gone before the new owners would move in. Anyway, its a bit of a project. Blown headgasket at the very least. But,its a 5 speed,Sport Coupe with only 130k miles on it. DOHC and,I got a supposedly "good junkyard engine" too. The PO was more of a "replace the engine" kinda guy instead of a "fix the existing engine" kinda guy. Me,I'm a fix the existing engine kinda guy. But,I had to take the extra engine 'cause they needed all of it gone. So,I joined the neon.org board today. I really have no particular interest in this sort of car,but my 15 yr old daughter does. In fact, out of the three subaru's that I have in my corral right now,she would rather drive this thing when that time comes. I'm gonna give the headgasket a whirl and whatever else may be wrong. I'm sure glad it's a 5 speed and not an auto.
