New (old) sube, need help
markjw replied to SubaruMaverik's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On the loose exhaust headers..If your just trying to tighten the bolts and they are no longer grabging, pull them out. Chances are they are the threaded studs with nuts rusted in place. Break loose the nut, unscrew it out to the end of the stud, put a second "jam" nut on it and re-insert into the head. Maybe the extra lenght will find new threads. Maybe not. I just got a set of Pugeot wheels just like yours. Hey, Ya wanna sell a couple of those Lug Nuts? Just Kidding. -
I have this Dual fan radiator from a a/c car that I have been using. The secondary fan doesn't do anything 'cept sit there.( I don't have A/C,it's not hooked up) I'm adding P/S to my '80 wagon and am now trying to bolt on the pump. The aluminum fan is in the way of the pump pully. The aluminum one is the one that is functional. Should I remove the black fan and move the aluminum one into its spot, so I have room for the pump? Or, should I remove the aluminum one all together and wire up the black one? Or, does it really matter? The pump is just laying there not bolted up yet. Any ideas?

What do ya think about this steering?
markjw replied to markjw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dont know. I talked to Albie just a couple days ago and even though he never came right out and said they were done for good, he did say they were concentrating all there efforts on machine guns and that soob lifts "were so long ago" -

The lift install went pretty good actually. Ive have some camber issues that may need attention. I want to actually drive her around a little before I get to concerned about that.( I had the motor out, too.) This steering thing is what is most concerning. The input to the new power steering box is too close to the axle. It will rub. Ill get some Pic's -

Im still a few days away from driving/testing the steering. If it doesn't rub the axle or bind, I guess i'll leave it. It is kinda scary looking thou. If someone could snap a pic of a AA/power steering shaft setup on a ea81 car, i'd sure like to see it. -
If your at the end of your adjustment on the old and new cable, and everything else is fine, I would think that maybe your clutch components are worn out. More than likely the friction disk. Also, the fingers on the pressure plate are week. Is your clutch slipping?

I finished the AA, 4" lift and am now trying to work out some of the bugs. One being the steering. The Kit I bought was NOS with a manual steering shaft. I pulled the engine, added power steering and installed the lift. I called AA today and they dont have a power steering shaft or anything else related to Subaru lifts. But if you need a Maching Gun...anyway, this is what I came up with. The input shaft to the steering gear is awful close to the drive shaft boot. So close it may rub occasionally. Anyone got a better idea? Thanks.

Hey Sean, thanks for the info on the steering joint.Yup, more than likely I'll just order the piece from AA. (maybe order one of the BMG's while im at it) First I'm gonna install the power steering and then the lift and go from there.

Thanks for all the info,Guys. I looked at that site last night but didn't realize they were so close to me. I can drive there in about a half hour. I called, no answer. Closed for the holiday. I'm headin up there on Tuesday for a idle jet and its holder and a rebuild kit. Thanks again.

Thanks for the link. You are right. It was not missing the accelerator pump. In the original pic, its just a blanked off spot where the pump could have gone, but the pump is on the other side. I went and bought it. He said he will have others for sale,$50 also, that he has to find. They are moving apparently. He's an old Datsun guy. Heres his CL link. http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/pts/410372735.html The only thing I see missing on this carb is in pic #1. It is a screw that had a rubber o ring. The o ring is still there. The screw is gone. Anyone know where I could get one? Or,what it's called specifically?
-
It looks like the accelerator pump is missing. I'm thinking its probly more of a headache than anything else.
-
Thanks for the reply. Im sure it probably needs a rebuild. Will there be some Model Numbers on the Carb somewhere? Thanks.

Im no speaker expert, but I have read that the 4 ohm, 8 ohm mix will eventually damage the equipment. I believe its the head unit (4ohm) that gets the worst of it.

I'll have to find an adaptor plate. I seen one at Redline. Im wondering it this is a DGV model I hear alot About in the Forum. Or is it something else. Can you tell from the Pic?
-
This is the only Pic available. Can someone tell me if this may work on my ea81 with the adapter plate, of course. The ad says "Weber 32/36 electric choke" I called and talked to the guy, but he didnt know anything else about it. $50, what do you think? Thanks. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1305/1281212321_6d128d0842.jpg?v=0

About that Steering Knuckle Extension. It is 10" long, exactly. I don't currently have power steering, but am certainly going to get it. What would a Power Steering knuckle look like? Maybe just shorter? I could maybe order one from AA. I have a mig so maybe I can just cut or weld this one? What do you guys think? Thanks.

I found the rear main seal at Schucks. $17....I just stuck the blade of a flattip screwdriver into the rubber, inner, soft portion of the seal, closest to the crank, then gingerly worked the blade in and up behind the outer (hard) portion of the seal then used the crank for leverage and it popped right out. Worked very slick and never jepordized the seal surface of the crank. (Do not use screws or anything like that to drill into the seal)

Well, Here's what I got. It looks good to me. The deal went down perfectly. I met Sean, (a member here) at Snoqualmie Pass and made the xchange. Great guy. He packed the kit on his Motorbike and drove up from Wenachee. (Thanks Dude,You Rock) I left there and headed to Renton to meet the guy who is currently advertising Puegoet wheels on Seattle Craigslist. He was a no-show. Whatever???? So, I need wheels! I may just go ahead with plan A and drill my hubs. The directions are pretty skimpy but alot of it looks self expanitory. We'll See.

Good idea about reading thru the instructions. I looked at the site, saw the lift but the pic looks kinda generick. I'll throw caution to the wind and go for it. thanks for the reply.

I'm meeting a guy this afternoon to look at a Allied Armament, Standard Lift Kit for the EA81. Apparently he bought it a couple years ago and never installed it. I found this deal on Craigslist and was wondering if I could get some ideas as to what I should look for. Im mostly concerned about installation instructions, which he says are included, but vague at best. Also, are these kits usually sold complete from AA or, might this be a partial kit, how will I know? Any ideas appreciated..

My First Snag..EA81 d/r 4speed Into '80 wag.
markjw replied to markjw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yo Mad Max, Ya still want that eng/trans? I'd like to see it gone. 10416 Old McKenna rd, Yelm.... -
I thought You might like to see a few pic's of our first roadtrip with the '80 wagon I have been working on. Really I'm just showing off this sweet, bone stock GL (except for the engine and trans)that sits in the garage while my Wifes new Yukon sits outside in the driveway.hahahaha Thats St. Helens in #3 and #4. There is actually smoke coming out of her, but you cant see it clearly in the Pic. This angle shows the Crater very clearly. Were kinda on Rainer so I couldn't take a Pic of it. http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u111/shedmr/roadtrip1.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u111/shedmr/roadtrip2.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u111/shedmr/roadtrip3.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u111/shedmr/roadtrip4.jpg

Head gasket nightmare
markjw replied to Andy FitzGibbon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I gotta tell you, I dont drive anything I cant work on/fix myself. Exactly for the reasons your talking about here. Not to say all mechanics are shady 'cause I know of a few Good and Honest ones, but like you said, "I dont want to get into that Game", ever. My wife drives a new gmc something or rather and only the dealer garage ever touches it. I feel for you man. Maybe your right, cut your losses and move on.
