These brakes have been poor to ok at best on this car since new Disc front and drum rear Now 220K on car and the brakes are grinding so it's time for rotors etc. Please give me some advice on where I should buy these parts -- I'm North of Houston. What should my approximate cost be to buy these parts and put them on vs. taking to a shop? I realize that you don't know all the parts that I need. Should I go to Napa or or? ----------- I just left a local KWIK KAR shop to get my yearly inspection and I asked the guy what he'd charge to put on a CV axel and his quote was like $350: Then he said maybe I could find one for less and he'd put it on for $65 --I fould one for $55 so !! I think if I showed up with new discs & pads he'd put those on as well - for a decent price Sorry to ramble on -- Thought -- Advise

You said that you have one. I'm in Texas though -- not many subies down here. There's a guy who posts here -- he's a moderator? He's in Houston... Perhaps he can chime in here as well. How many miles on the one you have and how much would it be to buy and get down here? I'll probaby need a CV axel too the driver side is making noise and the boot is in bad shape. I think the pass side was replace once. What is recommended for this replacement? I appreciate everyones help!

For $1000 +- I should be able to get the steering rack, drive axel and some other goodies fixed. It would be nice to get 300K+ out of this legacy. What is your opinion about rebuilding the one that's on it now -- I was told it's better than an after market one? The Rack I was quoted about $600 to rebuild including labor w/warranty!

Which new model would you buy? I'm a Realtor and I need some inexpensive transportation -- but maybe on the new side of the block. You can see my post on the 96 Legacy -- great car 220K + miles still looks good needs some TLC Are these new ones as good as our old 96??? Subara has a few specials on lease etc. right now too -- Impreza, Legacy, Outback etc.... Hate to be milage restricted though.

I have a 96 legacy sedan 220K that appears to have at least a bad steering rack and maybe one one of the drive axels bad -- wet everywhere underneath. timing belt at 200K might be leaking at those seals too though. what 2 do fix or? I like this car Texas no rust nice interior & exterior. How much should I be looking at for repairs? A mechanic that I discussed this with suggested rebuilding the rack rather than replacing it with an aftermarket rack? He said thatsome of the aftremarket ones weren't too good? Opinions thoughts etc. How mush will it cost (ballpark) to bring this suby back 2 life? Thanks!

Thanks guys I'll do a better post on the problems. The car steers and handles great. It's leaking and oil and or fluids and landing on the exhaust causing smoking I could have leaky seals near the timing cover too but that's another issue, The belt was changed around 200K now at 220K During my last 100 mile ride I started hearing noises and grinding in the front end. I thought for sure it was the brakes but i pulled a wheel off and I don't think its the brakes. The driver side boot has pulled away and ripped apart and it looks like the bearings could be damaged. If I had a good manual of the front end underneath I could describe all this better. If someone could e-mail me something it would be helpful and then I do another post. It might not be steering it could be the drive shaft! Thanks!

1996 Legacy 2.2 sedan 220k miles rack & pinion was leaking boots falling apart nasty looking under the car. Started making a lot of noise while driving so I thought it was front brakes but I think it's a lot more. I love this car as it's like a little sports car and handles great... I can't find the after market site where I saw steeering parts etc for Any help comments etc would be nice
