  1. I just took my old one's off and took them to an auto parts store (O'Reilly's) to make sure I got the exact replacements. Or, you could take yours off, lay them out flat, and photograph them, for matching up with RockAuto's pictures.
  2. Maybe rub a little vaseline around the O-ring with a q-tip, to keep it from drying out and cracking.
  3. So the clutch, flywheel and clutch cable were replaced after 32 years of great service. Replaced with OEM parts. Exedy clutch kit (Amazon) LUK flywheel (RockAuto) Subaru OEM clutch cable (Lithia Subaru of Oregon) I've had a Weber carb on it for years and now the clutch & shifting feel like when I drove it off the dealer's lot all those years ago. A few other things to attend to but nothing that affects how it runs.
  4. '86 GL. I live in a fairly small town and there is a wrecking yard but it has no Subarus in the years I need. The nearest wrecking yard in a city of any size is 45 miles away. I'd like to find the gray cloth buckets seats, if possible. Or even one, for the driver seat. A real long shot, I'm sure. I'm in southwest WA state.
  5. It's the oddest thing...I was going to order my clutch cable from Lithia Subaru online, and the order form is asking for a part #, along with the VIN Precise person that I am, I always try to have a part number for any specific item I need, no matter what the item may be. I keep lists of things I need to buy with all the pertinent info ready. Only I seem to have caused a meltdown by asking for the part number. Btw, I never gave any indication of when I was going to place the order. Someone made another assumption. I make a budget for every month and work in the extras when I can. Just because I like to get my ducks in a row shouldn't generate a lot of erroneous assumptions on the part of anyone.
  6. I'll buy the best ones I can find. I need way more than 7-8 years out of them. The ones on the car now are 32 years old. The only thing wrong with them is that they're leaking a little bit of oil.
  7. You ASSumed. Nice of you to apologize. And for telling me how I *should* do it. Like I'm in the wrong by doing it my own way.
  8. And for your information GD, I am a 75 year old widow getting by on my own, and never in my life has anyone ever thought I was a cheapskate.
  9. Excuse me but I AM going to order from the guy & place you recommended! I never had any intention of doing otherwise. And SHAME ON YOU for assuming something that is so totally wrong. He called me back on my cell after I'd left my # for him while he was at lunch. I was in my car, pulled over, with traffic going by while I was trying to write down the details he was giving me. I wanted the part # so when I ordered from Lithia I could tell them what it was I was after when I had the money to place the order. I lost the scrap of paper I wrote it on. That's why I called him back later to get the part #. Again,SHAME ON YOU for ASSuming I am a deadbeat and trying to get away with something underhanded. You are very insulting.
  10. I know the parts are hard to find but I'd rather do a lot of online searching for new or professionally rebuilt parts. So far I've been successful. I enjoy the hunt.
  11. My car is 32 years old. What are my chances of finding good axles in a junk yard that fit a car that old? If they're in a junk yard they are likely junk. I guess I'm a Sube-snob - I would never put junkyard parts in my car.
  12. Not sure what you mean by "lift". I don't want it lifted any more than it was when it came from the factory. Yes, Cardone is a brand I've looked at. But that does me no good unless I can match up my particular vehicle with the right Cardone product.
  13. Prefer going the OEM route if possible. Vehicle: 1986 GL, on demand 4WD, 5-speed wagon, EA82, SOHC carbureted, H4 engine
  14. Me, I'd prefer to sat time & effort, let someone else do that, and buy a reman.
  15. Some people can't or don't want to repair an alternator. The ones for sale are all remanufactured anyway.
  16. https://www.ebay.com/b/Alternators-Generators/177697?maspect=contextType%3ACAR_AND_TRUCK&Model=GL&Make=Subaru&Engine+-+Liter_Display=1.8L&Engine=1.8L+1781CC+H4+GAS+SOHC+Naturally+Aspirated&Submodel=Base&Year=1987&Trim=Base+Wagon+4-Door&LH_PrefLoc=1&rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=1000 Don't know how fast you need it but it's usually better to order online for an exact fit because you can be very specific about the vehicle it's for. That has been my experience anyway.

  18. I did locate a main seal. I had to call several places around town before locating one. Napa had it. It got installed along with the LUK flywheel and the Exedy/Daikin clutch kit. My local Subaru dealer is lousy for parts on old Subes even tho' several other parts places have what I'm looking for. I should know better than to even try with them. Thanks for the source on the clutch cable. What will they need to know specifically about my car in order to match up a cable?
  19. Subaru dealers should have these? I won't run into the "Subaru doesn't make those for cars that old anymore and we can't get any for your car." I tried to get a lower main seal from them this week and that is what I ran into.
  20. For '86 GL 4WD 5-spd. wagon, 1.8L, SOHC, carbureted. Looking on RockAuto after selecting for my model they are showing: 33.40" and 33.27" for 4WD. Then 36.02" without specifying if it's for 4WD. Naturally, I'm confused.
