  1. I love my hill holder. One of the best car features ever.
  2. I don't stare much at mine as I'm the only one who ever drives my 'Ru. But I would like to stare at a new unblemished one (but not while I'm driving).
  3. Some XXX-hole poked holes in mine several years ago after breaking into the car. Poking the holes was pure maliciousness - some tweaker looking for whatever metal they could steal. Look like they took a screwdriver to the headliner - really mangled it. The replacement material seems really hard to find, for some reason. There is a place in Oregon that has what I need but their reviews are terrible. It's the perforated gray that came on a graphite-colored 1986 GL wagon. Maybe on some other colored exteriors as well. Anyone know of a source? I am not the pick & pull or do-it-yourself sort. Just the yardage would be great. Thanks in advance. Subarule (I am in SW Washington)
  4. Good stuff - thanks. I saved the link into My Favorites. Here's my car's symptom: diesels really bad about 50% of the time when I shut it off. Seems to need higher RPM setting for idling.
  5. Thanks for the bump. Can't have a shop do it since it's a modified system with the Weber replacing the factory Hitachi, and the retrofitting. Illegal in WA state for certified shops to work on fuel system mods. And who now working in a shop knows how to work on carburetors? Not many left with solid experience. Subarule
  6. Or maybe it's a timing thing. This is for an '86 GL. I'm in the Longview/Kelso area. Pls don't tell me how to do it myself - I'm elderly, somewhat disabled, have no tools or mechanical skills. I can talk about car stuff and systems but can't work on them. Can anyone help me out? Subarule
  7. What additional parts should I buy for the strut replacement job?
  8. The Sachs seem considerably more expenive than the KYBs. The KYBs are in the right price range for me.
  9. That's what I'm looking for, direct OEM replacements. The KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G SHOCK ABSORBERS AND STRUT ASSEMBLIES at AutopartsWarehose seem like a good buy. Free shipping too. at AutoParts Ware house seem like a good price. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/search/?Ntt=1986+Subaru+Struts&searchType=global&N=0&submit=
  10. Thank you both. I don't mind paying "a bit more" for good struts. I'm guessing I want gas struts. Besides getting the stiffer ride I'm looking for, would I also get lift? My car seems to have "sank" over the years. The gas is mostly gone from the factory struts? I'm just guessing here.
  11. I like the high stiff ride that was on the wagon when I bought it new in '86. What type of struts do I want, to get back to that stage? I don't want it jacked up any more than the original state. It is a 4WD. The shocks/struts have never been replaced. Can you recommend any brands? What brands should I stay away from? And do I want gas or air struts? Stupid questions - do the front and rear both have struts? Are they called something else in the front? I DO NOT WORK ON CARS (female senior citizen).
  12. 86 GL wagons are getting really hard to find, ones that are clean, rust-free and haven't been messed with. They may be plentiful depending on where you live but not stock or near-stock condition. And who wants someone's else's FrankenSube? If you don't believe me, pick any major city in the U.S. and do a Craigslist search for an 86 GL. Nice ones are getting to be as rare as hen's teeth.
  13. Different chokes. http://www.redlineweber.com/carb-kits/auto/subaru/
  14. She needs some white snowflake rims to look sharp.
  15. I think "improve" and "Hitachi" are mutually exclusive terms.
  16. Vacuum line leak somewhere. You're describing a typical symptom of that. Replace the vacuum lines with new before investing in a fuel pump. Subarule
  17. Hmmm, haven't heard of that product before - can it be purchased in automotive stores?
  18. Now it's the glove compartment - it won't stay closed. Nothing is impeding it. The parts seem to be all there. The spring pin seems to not be catching whatever it's supposed to grab. But that's a guess, since I can't see what's going on inside when I try close it. How do I fix it, back to original working condition? Taping it shut is not an open....tacky, tacky (no pun intended). 1986 GL wagon
  19. Uh...no thanks. I believe you. But my low gas icon/light has never come on since I bought the car. A quarter of a tank left (according to the needle gauge) starts making me nervous. Wherever you live, you should think "possible evacuation". It could happen. It does happen. Wanta' have the ol' Subie gassed up and ready to get out of Dodge right quick.
  20. The electrical shop I took it to does marine wiring too. They're good.
  21. I've had my '86 GL its entire life and have driven every day since it was new. I've never, ever been able to put more than 12 gallons in the tank when I fill it up, which I always do when it's time to get gas. The specs say 15+ gal. tank but that is not reality. I wish it would take that much to fill it. Subarule
  22. Seriously. That's what I thought too - what a pile of morons.
  23. The solution: repair shop wired it wrong, the Subaru dealer service shop wired it wrong, finally took it to an auto elctric shop & they got it right.
