  1. OP Parts is another company that makes new axles as well for EA81's.

A local import parts store near me used to sell EMPI's. But switched to the OP Parts ones due to too many failures the past year. (what they told me)

I had bought two of them (EMPIs) and the DOJs would blow up before the warranty was out. So though inconvenient, at least it was like lifetime free axles.

But I noticed the boots rotted fast as well. Only got a year out of the last set before the boots fell apart.

The OP axles seem to have longer thicker boots. Only had them a couple months so I'm not sure about long term yet.

  2. I use various methods depending on the job.

Have a parts washer for big nasty stuff (20gal HF special) I forget the cleaner I used in it. Stuff was $9 from HF, looks like antifreeze and I only needed half the gallon diluted in the washer to clean some really nasty caked engine parts.

Careful with soaking though. It eats aluminum. But I was cleaning to get a bit more out of the scrap so all the etching was no biggie.

I'll just use some brake cleaner for small stuff. Little blast and a rag wipe usually gets it.

And for the medium jobs I got a gallon of that Castol Super Clean that I'll put some in a spray bottle, which never lasts as it eats the seals, so use a cheap/old one. Stuff works great but is really hard on the skin, wear rubber gloves.

  3. Thanks. :)

I know I about blew a gasket when I flipped through it at the mailbox the day I got the issue. Took the sting out of the bills that came that day too. hehe

I thought it was funny mine is right next to the lifted short bus.....

I figure it never hurts to submit to the mags. Took awhile for them to put it in (like I said they wouldn't even recognize it now, and it's more "worthy" these days).

But I thought it was neat they held on to it for one of the "best of" issues.

  4. I had over 300k miles on the EA81 in my GL before I replaced it.

It had a nasty rod knock.

I used to bury the tach and just flog it out at the dunes.

    Never had a problem.

I recently took that engine apart and was greeted with an oil pan full of main bearing and rod bearing chunks. They were well embedded in the sludge on the bottom. So they had been there awhile.

So an EA81 will run at 7,000 rpm with no bearings in it for at least 50,000 miles (the length of time I owned it with the nasty noises coming from the case) no problem.

  5. Well, thats one good guess from Northwet. Another would be the steering rack mount rubber has slipped out and is letting the rack move up and down which changes the toe-in.

    Ed

I've had that happen on mine as well on one side. It did do the pulling either way while accelerating/decelerating. Also it gave a loud clunk at times during steering and getting on and off the gas.

After it happened a couple times in a row. (I had to fix it almost every time I took it out) I took the bracket that clamps it down and layed a couple weld beads along it to give it a bit of bite into the rubber. Grips great now and the rubber bushing has not slipped out in over a year.

  6. I think I'm busy this weekend. Plus I've been out the past couple weekends so my girlie proly would like it if I spent less time with the Soob for once....

It should be good and nasty up there. I'm looking off in the valley and the snow has dropped quite a bit. So Goat should be already dumped on.

I left the house at about 8:00 monday night to go up.

I'm always prepared to stay over night anytime I go wheeling though.

Had a few times I wasn't stuck or brokedown. But just said screw it and decided to camp out while doing some late wheeling. :)

A TSF or sand lake run is in order soon though. Not been to either in awhile. Thinking of doing a winter camping trip at TSF. Alot of the trails are closed/snowed in already but a few lower ones are runnable.

  7. It was good times. Except for the rain while airing back up. That sucked.

Always nice when some in the group are looking at ya sideways at the meetup spot. Then at the end of the day you are still there in their rearview mirror.

Me and Gregg didn't hit the top though. We stopped at the gravel pit near the top. It was starting to get a bit high in the center. Not much you can do about dragging bottom in that icy slushy stuff. It just holds on.

I find you get invited on more runs when you know your limits rather than always forcing it and then needing a pull out. Bigger 4x4s tend to give more respect that way. :)

  8. Soobs with the 4x140 wheel stud spacing (like your EA82) can use Peugeot 505 wheels. They will bolt right up.

There should be a wheel guide in the off road FAQ showing some of the options. :)

Also you can modify your hubs a bit for the six lug conversion so you can put wheels from say a Toyota pickup on.

You can also modify the six lug wheels to fit your 4 lug hubs.

Make sure where you are at they will not inspect these things. Might be something to make you not pass. (I know some countries in Europe do a thorough inspection on mechanical stuff)

    Have fun! :)

  9. Yeah they put me into the "Strange gang" section, but that's alright.

Whats funny is I would have thought peeps here would have been more excited too.

I keep getting "Hey I saw your Soob in 4wheel today!" PMs from guys on the 4x4 sites. Even before I started posting up that it was in there.

Jeepers just show me more love I guess. hehe

Yeah we'll have to hook up. The XJ forum is doing a tree run up Goat next sunday. Meet at the ranger station in Estacada I think at 9 or so.

Mainly Jeeps (of course) but we generally have a good mix of rigs. And those guys love seeing Soobs. Last year was a blast.

  10. They only have up to parts of the Jan issue up on the site.

It's in their 40 best readers rides section.

Should be posted up soon I would think.

I have a subscription so I got the issue already. Don't know if it's out yet in stores though.

  11. If you flip to page 32 of the February issue of Petersen's 4Wheel & Off Road.

You'll see the old version of my Soob. Funny how much it has changed since that was done (took 'em long enough hehe). They printed the year wrong as well. Oh well.
