SERIOUS Gen I BRAT shoppers only please
PHATBRAT replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Damn Paul, You always seem to find really cool stuff. A Fiberglass BRAT??!! WoW!!! Someone had alot of time on their hands. That would totally kick rump roast with that 350HP EJ25 that was posted (EBAY) Street domination from an old Subaru BRAT. Bye Bye Mustangs,Camaros, Firebirds, Vette's, etc.. Paul, see if you can get some pics of this abnormality. -
That's called "kickdown" or "Passing gear" (Kickdown on a hill, Passing gear is for passing obviously) Sometimes, especially on hills, the trans is right on the line of 2nd or 3rd so it may "kick down" but most likely will go right back to third if it is in the redline. Nothing abnormal there. Not really good for a trans to be downshifting then upshifting back and forth like that especially with high rpm's but that's what they are made to do. Older Subaru transmissions suck *****.

Installing 3'' byb lift in my 86 rusty wagon? problems?
PHATBRAT replied to 83projectbrat's topic in Off Road
As far as I know, You really don't have to take anything out except the bolts that go through where the lift blocks go in. You then install the lift blocks with a new bolt that is included. You may have to disconnect one or two things in the process then reconnect them afterwards but it really depends on whose lift you are talking about (PK's, Mudrat's. other/or homemade) also, how high you are talking about. It is my understanding if you go more than 4 inches then other modifications need to be made such as lengthening the steering rod... Let's see what others have to say. I am not an expert in this area, I have never actually installed one of these lift kits on a subaru, This is just info that I have gathered over time. Like I said earlier, If the body is THAT rusty, I wouldn't waste the time. -
That would be an absolute wet dream in a BRAT.

Installing 3'' byb lift in my 86 rusty wagon? problems?
PHATBRAT replied to 83projectbrat's topic in Off Road
I wouldn't waste the time/money installing a lift kit in something that is very rusty. One, it just opens up more area to rust and two the car will not be inspectable before you know it. It just doesn't seem to be worth the time. If it had just a little rust that would be one thing but it sounds like your car will be one with the earth shortly. It just doesn't seem to be worth the hassle. Plus you may end up breaking bolts and/or other things in the process of lifting it. Just my $0.02 -
I guess it all depends on how confident you are in your abilities/knowledge, what route you will be taking etc.... Me personally, I would do it however THAT IS ME! I have towed quite a few cars and trailers and such. As for towing a BRAT with a BRAT, as long as you are driving a primarily flat route with very few stops/hills (Highway) and you stay in the right lane with the flashers on in the car being towed. Don't make any sudden turns left or right (you can always turn around) and don't accelerate or brake too quickly you should be alright. Keep the speed down (If you want to save money and tow with your BRAT than you have to accept the fact that you will be going quite slowly and it will take a while). I guess the bottom line is, if your BRAT is in good enough shape to take the trip with a load, you have a good route, and you don't drive like an rump roast and you really take your time, it can be done. However, I do not know you, and I do not know the condition of your BRAT so I will not recommend it.

Joe, Give me a call (609) 702 5966 Your PM box is full so I can't send anything to you. Boz
-
Dave, If you need one I know of the same BRAT with the good gas tank we could pull it off of there if you wanted. I would try a one of the BRAT's from Harry's first since that would be much cheaper.
-
Once I sell my BRAT I will sell my complete set of bed trim if the new owner doesn't want it. (Heck, Maybe I could sneak through this problem without selling the BRAT, who knows.)

will an ea81 wagon fender fit on a hatch?
PHATBRAT replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually, I do believe it is 1982 when the antenna was on the driver's side. Boz -
Still waiting. There's always a few people on here that always comment about the turbos so I am waiting to hear from you. You know who you are.......Don't hold out on us now.....
-
Alright, Something that's been on my mind for a while. How do you guys know what the difference is between all the turbos? They all have different weird numbers and stuff so how do you know which ones are bigger/smaller without looking them up etc... Which ones are good upgrades for an EA82T? (I am talking without any work or with very minimal work.) What are good things to do when upgrading Turbos. (Cams?) You know what I am saying? Like "As a general rule when upgrading to a larger turbo, you want hotter cams, advanced ignition timing etc" Spill out all info that you have...Inquiring minds want to know......

Hey, My way works 99.9% of the time and doesn't cost anything And the bonus is that it doesn't matter what state you are in
-
NO MORE than 100 bucks. Take it or leave it. Does he want it off the property? Offer him 50 bucks. If the car is open look in the glovebox for the paperwork. That doesn't cost anything. Slim Jim the door if needed. This is what I do when I want info on a car at the junkyard. I take the paperwork then look up the person's # in the phonebook and call to see why they junked it..... I can't see paying any money to find out unless you have no other options...
-
Surely there has to be a parts BRAT somewhere in Washington. I know of one here in NJ but you will pay an arm and leg for me to go to the yard and have them cut that out then to have it shipped. Yards here are not cheap by any means! Worse case scenario, let me know and I will see what I can do. Boz

It's funny you say that because at first glance I thought it was Ken's old hatch. I thought it was resurrected. Scary huh? Looks like a different color though.
-
Cool! At least someone can have fun. Say, who owned this hatch before, I swear I have seen it here before (On the USMB)
-
I looked into that at one point in time a few years back. I was gonna stuff a small block 327 in there. Just to let you know, you WILL need to make a custom frame.
-
Damn, That is definately cool! How much cutting was involved? What trans are you using? Makes me want the Gen I that I know of not far from here. I like the shaved front end. What color are you gonna end up painting it? Blue like the engine bay? I am most definately jealous!

PHATBRAT replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have heard alot of bad things about guys from the i-club (They are snotty etc...) However, When I was in Tx 2.5 yrs ago, they had a meet at some big lake and I took the BRAT down and met up with Josh (Legacy777) and I thought that most of the people there were ok. 1 or 2 snobby ones but other than that, they were ok in my book. Lots of interest in the BRAT. We took a pic with the BRAT and the legacy up front and tons of imprezas behind them. I met Troy from Cobb tuning also. Nice guy. I do know what you are saying though. There is a difference in the people that do their own work and/or fabrication vs the people that buy the bolt on parts. I am sure if we could buy the bolt on parts we would do that as well. Boz -
How many people can say.....
PHATBRAT replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

More on that STI Gen 1 Brat from down under
PHATBRAT replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A Truly AWESOME car! (However, Last time this vehicle was posted on the USMB it was stated that it had a forester engine/trans in it. From a wrecked forester) Now on his website it says otherwise. Regardless, I wish I had it.
