Recomendations on rotting Subframe repair
PHATBRAT replied to romcat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, Then spend more money trying to title it because it was salvaged plus add in gas, hotels, meals. Yeah, You'd be making out like a bandit! J/K Besides, When I was in Tx, I saw maybe 3 subarus in about a total of 8 different yards. -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2463624184&category=31868 I really like this car but was wondering if the tranny really is toast or if they still put modulater valves and such in the trannies. Sounds like something stupid. Anyone have ideas? I may go for it. Pretty close to my house.

up on the STi and came across something interesting. It is a 3.9 final gear ratio in the ever so wonderful 6 speed. Probably doesn't bolt right up to an old EA81 but wonder how much work it would be. All of this reading came about after a friend of mine said his Lexus IS300 can spank the Sti. He's not too bright. He was saying something to the effect of his car has a six cyl with xxx HP and no 4 cylinder could even compare because he eats mustangs for breakfast and such. When I told him it was 320 HP he brought out the BS flag so I took it and put it where the sun doesn't shine. I brought the STi brochure in the next day. I haven't heard him say much since that except talk of trading in his car.

Recomendations on rotting Subframe repair
PHATBRAT replied to romcat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Gareth, I thought of another suggestion for a cheap fix. Go to a tech school that teaches autobody and let your car be their practice. That would be much cheaper than an autobody shop and it would be done under the supervision of an instructor so it should be done right. Other than this and what we already talked about, I am out of ideas. Boz -

High performance crossover pipe
PHATBRAT replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
"Faster than a WRX now" Man that cracks me up. If a 379 dollar pipe can make an EA82T "faster than a WRX" than I will be 1st in line. Bwuahahahahahaha -
Gen2 brat waterpump replacement?
PHATBRAT replied to Bigbusa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am on dial up and connected at 46 and the pic was up by the time I scrolled there. Real fast, no probs. Anyway, H20 pump really easy, do yourself a favor and replace the hose like stated earlier and just my personal technique, replace the thermostat too at the same time since you are gonna have coolant loss. I suggest PepBoys 160 degree. Works great. No condensation issues like stated in EA performance page. I never had a problem when I did mine. -
Reassembling EA82T/worked plenum(pictures)
PHATBRAT replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, the bird thingy, as you call it, appears to be a part that Subaru did not manufacture. Some other company made it and Subaru had a contract for it would be my guess. What company? I have no idea. -
Basically, what you want is to put a digital dash in the wagon, right? Anything can be done, You will just have to figure out how/where to splice wires. If this isn't what you're saying then please be a little more specific. I am dumb.

Damn that thing is clean. I really wanted to tear mine all the way down but I know me and I know that it would be yrs to put it back together. I am still working with the one I have had for too long now. Looking great! Keep it up! -
should I fix my loyale b/f selling it?
PHATBRAT replied to jim martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On a loyale, No don't waste your money. They are a dime a dozen. You will NEVER get that back on a trade in. -
I believe the original headlight covers in question were plastic ones, not the wire mesh. They do not make them for a BRAT. Are you telling me the plastic ones for a monte SS will fit a BRAT????? If so, what year SS?
-
No one makes them for a BRAT I know, JC Whitney used to list them but it was a misprint. I made some for my BRAT but one eventually was broken and I never made another set.

Correct me if I am wrong but those are 14" American Racing wheels. I know where 2 of them are on a Gen I BRAT. -
scuse me while i gloat over my new brat!
PHATBRAT replied to baccaruda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Awesome, Welcome to the NASBC (North American Subaru BRAT Club) (It's an idea I have been toying with for a while in my head. I was gonna get floormats embroidered with "NASBC" and what it stood for in small letters underneath. But I don't have the smarts for a website etc... and time/money is an issue for me so for now, I will just keep the name and idea) Anyway, Sounds like a good deal. Like taking candy from a baby, or was it a BRAT from a LOL. -

Board Member Engine Rebuilders
PHATBRAT replied to Myxalplyx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's really not that difficult. You should do it yourself and have 1 or 2 people come help you if needed. I always have a second or 3rd set of eyes when I do stuff. Get yourself a FSM. You will learn and have fun as you go. I would offer to help but as it stands right now, I cannot even find enough time for my wife/kids/projects I already have. If you get stuck, ask the board until you understand. Worse case scenario, pay someone else or buy another engine. -

EA-82 died on the highway
PHATBRAT replied to hilux_1990's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't sound good at all. Sounds like alot has happened. Timing belt and or headgastket, cracked block, No one will know for sure until you rip it apart. Probably cheaper and easier to find a good used engine, and do all maintenance before installing it. Good luck! -
Newb question about a fuel problem...
PHATBRAT replied to iheartmybrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had similar symptoms once, I SWORE it was a fuel problem. I replaced both filters yadda yadda yadda in the freezing (Literally) rain still same problems. Waited a day or two, refilled with gas, same stuff. Ran ok when I dumped fuel down the carb. It had me going crazy. Long story short, Turned out to be a vacuum line that I just noticed out of the corner of my eye while I was banging my head on the air cleaner out of frustration. I had previously checked the vacuum lines too. I guess I just needed to slow down a little. CHECK YOUR VACUUM LINES REALLY WELL. -
OK Guys, I am gonna stick my foot part way into my mouth here. I sat here and thought about this for a while and I do recall turning those damn pistons back in. It was a real PITA at times. The part where the C-clamp came in was at the end when I couldn't turn anymore but still needed a little more room. I may have been thinking of some other vehicles at the time as well. Yes, the piston has to line up. I APOLOGIZE for the bad info on my part. I hope no one went out and said "Well, uh, PHATBRAT said you can just clamp it in..." I doubt anyone took MY advice anyway. Well, as hard as it is to admit when you are wrong, I'd rather look like an rump roast right now, then after someone messes up their car. Bring on the tar on feathers, I already know they are coming my way......It happens to the best of us from time to time *Disclaimer*(NOT SAYING I AM THE BEST OR EVEN ONE OF THE BEST, I AM FAR FROM IT.)

A wise man once said "Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see" 35-40 MPG, Yeah right! What was the gas mileage figures on the sheet when it was new? Maybe 32. 35 is really stretching it I think but is still possible depending on location, type gas, maintenance on your car, and how many hills you went down with a wind behind you, but 40 MPG, Sorry guys, I like all of you but I am throwing up the BS flag here. Diesel engines get 40 MPG and better. As far as I know, none of us owns a Diesel Subaru. Just trying to keep it real around here. Boz (Anyone that wants to challenge this needs to show me proof)

Excellent score Mick! I never knew they even made those.

Congrats, I hope everything goes well. And remember, Life is like a box of chocolates.....
