  1. Jessica,

Do you still have Mtn Grizzly? I built that car quite a few years ago. Looks like it has had quite a few owners and changes. I really miss her and only sold her when she wouldnt pass smog in California anymore...we had to smog them while on a dyno type thing! Anyways, I would love to hear back from you. Her original name was the "tomato" and a lot of hard work has gone into her!

  2. Finally got my Suby running! Here is a video of its first start! http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k223/59bisquik/?action=view&current=Movie.flv
  3. Thanks guys! I dont have a manual for it yet. It was from a JDM 89-93 Legacy. Not sure what manual would be the right one to get since the car was never imported here. I really only need the engine info.
  4. Even sillier question, whick one is # one? I was thinking odf doing that with a dial indicator. Is there a way to tell by the mark on the crank/timing belt pulley? Timing belt marks?
  5. Long story short, there is no timing marks on my balancer. I need help finding TDC so I can position the crank trigger. I am assuming that 0 would be TDC correct? WHats the best way to check this? I really should go get a manual for this thing! Quite a bit different than my old EA81!
  6. Yup, turbo too! Now the hard part...welding shut all of the unused ports on the manifold. Assembling a Megasquirt. Fitting an intercooler to it with the offroad header and such. Looks like the JDM engine is rated at 220ps or 216hp!! Probably get a few more ponies with the offroad exhaust and custom tune.
  7. Well it apears to be an EJ20G from a 89-93 Japanese Legacy. Suposedly somewhere between 212-248 HP according to the NASIOC guys. Thanks guys!
  8. Well, I finaly got a good deal on an EJ20T and an adapter kit. I know that EJ20T is not the correct name and I am not sure what is. I will be picking it up tomorrow evening. First off, what is the correct name for it? And secondly, am I correct that it has 200 or so stock hp? I will have more info tomorrow like block numbers and such. I believe it even has coil on plug. Any info guys?
  9. The problem with the TT's is, I would have to build a new exhust and have tons of plumbing. The turbos are in the wrong spot and will interfere with my CV's and such. Not to mention, a car that sees lots of steep dunes does not need a dead spot! If I strip it down and go with a single and header, it should work good. My goal is lots of power and try to keep it very simple. Basically, just wondering if the engine was the same. I dont want something that will be hard to get belts and parts for. I am trying to do something like this.
  10. I am saving up for a EJ20T swap into my dune buggy. I seem to find tons of EJ20TT JDM motors but the EJ20T seems harder to find. My question is, if I strip the twin turbos off and put the offroad header and a single turbo from a EJ20T...would it be the same? All of the TT stuff seems to be a bit much. I am going to use a Megasquirt ECU and trim all of the extra stuff off. WHat do you guys think?
  11. If you are looking at A-Arms, have you looked into Fox 2.0 air shocks? They are half the price of coilovers. They are valvable and and rebuildable. Ride height is set by the nitrogen charge and can be adjusted. No coils to worry about. Just a thought! Here is a guy who uses them on a much heavier rig...
  12. Mostly dune Dumont since it is only 2 hours away. WE are going to Glamis in January though...but thats a bit of a road trip! It also sees alot of desert use out in Stoddard Valley. We throw on the desert tires and head out there alot to test the car after I fool with it. Where do you normally go?

I dont have a link, maybe a web search would work. But a few years ago there was a guy who installed front and rear TTB D28's with a V8 and had a small car body installed on top. He was trying that since the TTB front works so well in desert racing. I think he was trying to build a prerunner type rig. I dont think it went over very well. FWIW...I think a solid axle swap would be easier. THe TTB is going to need alot of brackets and there are wierd factors due to the design...like 1" or lift actually gives 1.5" of lift and if the drop brackets are not long enough, they only sell 3.25 degree camber kits so you will have alignment issues. I have had good luck with mine and really like it, but to each thier own. I included a link to my cardomain page. It has the build up of my rig and I have some pretty good pics of the 12" extended radius arms I built for the front. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/958490/1
  14. I run an 002 Bus tranny that should handle it for a while. Or atleast till I can get a built tranny. I have been doing research on the swap but havent bought anything yet, till I know exactly what I need. Also, I am working on adding 10" Fox shocks and extended arms to the front and working on getting a 3x3 kit for the rear. Once the suspension is done....the subie transplant will be on!
  15. I currently run a 1915cc VW with a single Empi 44 HPMX. The car is pretty quick and VERY reliable. However, it is almost the slowest car in our group now. One guy has a 660lb aluminum rail with a 200hp 2332 (not very reliable) another has a 1915 with a turbo with 12 psi of boost putting out 180-190hp. THe other fast guy is running a 2180 with dual carbs and a thousand dollar set of heads. The first two mentioned are beating the LS2 cars up Comp Hill! My car is slower and heavier, it is a dual sport desert car unlike the rest that are pretty much strictly sand rails. I am currently working on getting 12-14" travel front and rear and then will start building the subie. My theory was have enough suspension to be fast through the rough terrain first...then make it faster. If you have tons of HP but have to slow down every time you see a whoop or rut...it seems kinda useless.
  16. I am looking to install a EJ20T in my sandrail. I will be using a Megasquirt ECU system with a crank trigger style ignition. I will be using an Outback motorsports header with an open exhaust. Stock they are about 220HP correct? What do I need to do to put it around the 250 range? More boost? Bigger Injectors?? Emissions and exhaust and stuff will be trimmed off... just looking for plenty of HP to spin those paddles. Thanks!
  17. I loved my old Subie...but I dont have time to build another car. I think I will stick with my Bronco II on 35's! I have my Bronco II, Chenowth sand rail getting the EJ20T swap soon, 54 Ford Coupe getting a frame off....So I have WAY too many projects going!
  18. Hey Shawn! Im glad to see the old wagon is getting lots of use! As for the EJ20T swap, its going in a sand rail that sees lots of desert and dune use. With a bus tranny the gears are pretty low. So it will spend most of its time in the upper RPM range, Torque shouldnt be that much of an issue. A car under 1500 lbs with an EJ20T should be pretty quick!
  19. I am starting to round up parts for my EJ20T swap into my sand rail. Has anyone here used the Megasquirt computer system and harnesses?

Now im not sure how you would swap a TTB D35 into a subie.... And if you did do it, I would recommend very soft Jeep XJ coils. You can choose different manufacturers of springs and they all have different spring rates. TTB lift springs are too stiff for really good flex. I have a 86 Bronco II with a D35 up front and a 8.8 out back. I spin 35's with 4.88 gears and a t-case doubler. Double low is 6.15:1 ! I know alot of people hate the TTB and the D35, however when built right can give great flex and be plenty strong. I decided against the SAS full width Dana 44 swap after running the Rubicon and the Dusy Ershim on the TTB! I also have no tire wear issues and it aligns great! But of course, everyone has thier own opinions and experiences. Dusy Ershim Odessa Canyon
  21. WOW! I must have been gone a LONG time! When did people start doing SAS under thier soobs?? I sure miss that car...it was a one of a kind out here in SoCal. I sure hope she gives you the same amount of fun and enjoyment I got out of her. BTW, before she was the Mountain Grizzly...She was affectionately known as "The Tomato"!! After getting rid of the soob, I inherited a Bronco II and built that up. She now sits on 35's, locked front and rear and a t-case doubler. It has taken me to the Rubicon, the Dusy Ershim and will be going to Moab this year. And as previously mentioned, I will be lurking in the newer forums. I will be installing a EJ20T in my sand rail once I get the mid travel suspension worked out!
  22. I put alot of work into that car back in the day. Back then it was one of the few with a lift kit and all of the goodies. Too bad it wouldnt pass smog in California anymore. I really missed that car. Looks like time and rust has really taken its toll on the ol' girl.
