I may be waaay off on this, but I'll just toss it out there since nobody else has. How 'bout the screws on the back of the oil pump. Legend has it that they are prone to backing off, I've read that on here more times than I can count, but I've never read what the result is when they do back off. Is this it? Good Luck! Will-

I've never checked to see if this is true for Subarus but, on every other car I've owned, the washer fluid comes out of a little ball mounted in a cup sort of like a ball point pen's tip. I was able to change the angle of spray by sticking a needle in the output hole and rotating the little ball a bit. You might give that a shot. Good Luck! Will-

Watch out for Highway Patorl 'cause they are not going to like that. Is there a plug in the floor inside the cabin you could knock out and run a long length of hose to a gas can in the back seat or something? Good Luck! Will- -
I happen to have the motor out of my GL10, so here you go. If you want any other measurements, I can try and give them to you. Remember, pics can lie and I don't know if I'm measuring in the correct place for your application. Good Luck! Will-

I'm not as worried about finding the shift linkage. A low mileage trans is harder to find, I've come across a few 5spd d/r's but they all had like a million miles on them so I didn't want them. I'm sure I can go back and get the stuff anytime. Of course now that I've put that in print the yards will probably crush them... I'm going to register, as far as whether I'll actually be able to go, I unfortunately won't know that until closer to the date. One of the projects I am heavily involved in at work is this and the competition is in early June so if the baja car is not finished before Carlisle I probably will need to stick around. That is good info. I read on the TDIclub that the starter for a TDI is 1.4kw which, I think, is the same as the EA and thus the EJ, so that should be fine. And yeah, I was relieved to see the turbo, I was NOT looking forward to having to shell out for that one. I also got the wiring loom and the ECU and really everything I need to being able to run it. The only thing I'm still trying to locate is the electric gizmo that controls the throttle at the pedal.

Except that the busted valve is on the side with the obliterated piston...

Well I was waiting until I had some more pics of stuff to share, but since ya'll are gettin antsy... First off, we FINALLY got some snow. Here I am reading the "I can't wait for spring" thread in off-topic and I'm all like, "man we haven't gotten any.... hey what's that?" Of course it's only like a piddly 3 inches and it'll be gone in a day or two I'm sure. Anyway.. Last weekend was a total bust. I spent the whole time doing chores and chasing down parts none of which I actually got. Grrr (not you bratman, other parts ) Most notably, no trans. I decided to hold off on that trans I was going to go look at yesterday. The guy wants 200 for it, he's not budging on price and it doesn't come with any shift linkage or trim. To be fair, he would've thrown it in, but he says he doesn't have it anymore. The only reason I want to get my hands on one now is so that I can start making the adapter. I want to leave the push-button in the car to help with measuring and fit up of the engine. I decided that if I haven't found another trans by the time I get paid, I'll bite the bullet and buy it. I'm sure I could find one farther north, but by the time I factor gas and the time it will take to get there (and maybe multiple trips if I strike out the first time) then $200 isn't looking so bad. So, plans for the weekend... The next thing I'm going to do is whip out the ol' angle gauge and hang the TDI from my hoist at the stock 20* and dangle it in the engine bay as close to the trans as I can get. One clearance issue I already know I'm going to have is the oil-pan clearing the engine cross-member. The EA motor has that little 2" section of bell-housing that pushes the oil-pan forward. The TDI doesn't, and I doubt I have the room up from to move the engine far enough forward. But that's part of why I'm going to dangle the engine, so I can find that stuff out. Once I know what kind of clearance I'll need for the oil-pan, I'll make the decision whether or not to modify or remake the cross-member. It will also depend on what the engine mounts need to look like. Fortunately, this TDI motor is used in like every vehicle VW made during this period so there is a virtual plethora of mounting points on the exhaust/intake side. The other side is a bit more restrictive, but it will be the side tilted up so I should have an easier time measuring and fabricating there. I did finally get a good look at the other motor. It does, thankfully, have the turbo and other miscellaneous sensors and whatnot that I'm missing from this motor. I was glad to find that out, because if that stuff was missing, the budget for this build would have to increase significantly! This week I should be pulling that motor from it's current location and bringing it home. Also, been thinking about flywheels, clutches and starters. Since the power output of the TDI is more comparable to the EJ's then the EA's, I though using a 2.2 or 2.5 setup would be better. I think I read in one of the various EJ conversion posts that a re-drilled EJ flywheel is used, that means it will fit in the bell-housing of the EA trans. I haven't compared starter power yet, but if the EJ starter will fit in the EA trans, I'll use that as well assuming it's of a comparable size to the TDI starter. OK, well that's about it for now. More when I got more. Will-

Bevelling Drilled Wheels
lostinthe202 replied to renob123's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Most drill bits have an inclusive angle of 118* or 59* off the center line. You should find out what angle your lug nuts have and buy a countersink to match that. If you can't find what you need locally, you can get it at Mcmaster.com Good Luck! -
I think that chart might have some typos or is missing some numbers. I tried to look up my trans ('96 obw 2.2l, 5spd) and the number wasn't on the list. My code is TY752VABCA which is a mere one character off from TY752VABBA,which is the trans listed for a MY 95-96 legacy outback. So that would suggest a typo. However, when I plug my final drive, tires size, gear ratio for 5th, and speed into one of those calculators such as this my rpm doesn't match. The rpm does match the outback trans ratios for the '97 outback but again the number is one character off. Anyway, I don't know if this is helpful but I thought I would toss it out there. Good Luck! I've got an '88 GL10 that has a persnickity air suspension system that I want to replace. Recommendations? Use will be both on road and off road. Thanks! Will-

Single Range Trans Ratios?
lostinthe202 replied to lostinthe202's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The rear diff is a 3.7 but this car left the factory as an auto and the PO put a 5spd pushbutton in and lets just say that I have my doubts about his knowledge of all things subaru. He had no clue what the trans came out of. I'm not going to be using it, I'll be using a 3.9 5spd D/R setup, but I want to try and identify it for whoever will be using it after me:) I haven't pulled it out yet, I should be doing that this weekend, when I do what will help me identify it? I think bratman18 mentioned to me that turbo axles have a different spline count then N/A cars so if the splines indicate a turbo trans (I doubt the PO had the ability to replace the stub axles) then, if I read subiemech85's chart right, that would make it a 3.7 because all turbo trans regardless of type are 3.7? No can do, there is no engine in the car. Thanks for the tip though! Thanks! Will- -

Bratman18 just told me about this, sounds like fun! I'm good for two cars. Is this the site and would I be registering as "Import/Kit-Replica Nationals Non-Judged Showfield?" I'd like to get in on the camping too if the sites aren't full. It would be me, possibly the wife if she's into going. When do we need to register by to get the USMB site? Will- -
I've got a push-button trans that is out of a mystery vehicle. It's currently in an '88 GL-10 which has a 3.7 rear diff (as it should). I have my doubts that 0the trans is also a 3.7, but really I have no idea. For all I know, all push-buttons are 3.7. All the tranny charts I find are for the dual-range trans. Is there one for the single range stuff? Or failing that, is there a general rule for the push-button variety? Thanks! Will-

I hope to have it done long before then. It's all I can think about:rolleyes:

OK, so my dirty little secret is that I don't know squat about turbos. I've never owned a turbo car until now. Aside from a specific shape to the mounting points, what makes one turbo different from another? Size of the rotor or impeller or squirl-cage or whatever is in the "snail"? Can two turbos of similar size be interchanged if you provide for the difference in mounts? The TDI motor I have I don't think has it's turbo included. I've been looking into them and they are expensive buggers so I thought about adapting the turbo from the ea82t I just pulled out of the GL-10. If it turns out that I really should be using the VW turbo, what would one look for if they were to go JY turbo shopping? Anything besides the obvious loose/noisy/grinding bearings and miles on the car? Thanks!!! Will-

Had a chance to fire up the ol' instant gratification machine today and cut out my template for the VW to see if I have the correct cad drawing... Looks like I do... I was hoping to try and pick up a trans on the way into work tomorrow, but looks like that isn't going to happen which means it has to wait until next week. So Saturday I'll pull the push-button that's in there and drag that into work on Sunday when I go to get the other TDI (which hopefully has the turbo on it) and use that trans to make the subie side.
