  1. Hey Evo, you don't happen to have the part number handy, the dealer is quite a haul from me so I'd like to order them online if I can. Thanks! Will-
  2. Shazaam! That's even better then the link I had, thanks!! There's yer link Gary.
  3. Thanks for the link! I did come across that one and saved it for the good info it had. I was planning on starting a post once I had some more stuff together. Right not I've got the engine (two of them actually) but I need to locate my trans (5spd d/r) then I'll get started on the adapter etc. etc. Keep an eye out on the transplants page! Will-
  4. Ahhhhhh, OK, I get what you're saying. Shouldn't be a problem for me since I'll be using an ea82 starter, flywheel, and gearbox. But If I do end up with an ea81 gearbox I'll remember to check that out. Thanks for pointing that out and being patient with your description! Will-
  5. I still don't quite get it, you say the starters are interchangeable, do you mean that the bolt pattern is the same, but that the ea81 starter throws the gear out farther? Or is the flywheel on an ea82 closer to the trans in relation to the bell-housing mating surface on the engine backside then an ea81? Or is the seat of the starter on the trans closer to the engine on an ea82 trans? If that's the case, then I need to be sure to use starter from the same ea version as the trans is from correct? I plan on making an adapter that will space the flywheel out the same distance as the adapter spaces the trans away from the motor so from the standpoint of the starter, the flywheel would be in the same location as it was before. Thanks for your input Will-
  6. I actually do have a chiltons, I almost never open it, didn't even think to look in there. Thanks! Will-
  7. '96 OBW OK, so I've read on here that the lights for the environmental controls are prone to going out in my model of car. I've even found and saved the super cool link to the write up on how to fix it (thank author who I can't remember at this moment). Mine have been out since I've owned the car (3 years) and I never really cared since the order of them is the same as just about every other Japanese car I've owned (it's the most efficient use of space, thanks to Nipper for that bit of info) so I know where they are without having to look at the symbols. But I thought I would tackle it since the buttons are getting a little sticky (the recycle button super so). While I was cleaning my car the other day I noticed that the symbols for the vent selection looked (and felt) painted on which leads me to ask this possibly stupid question. Do the symbols light up? The little green lights underneath work, always have, but the symbols themselves as well as the fan knob are dark. But I don't know anybody else with my year range legacy type interior so I've never seen what they are supposed to look like. OK, I'm done rambling, thanks:) Will-
  8. haha, well if your clutch ends up being for an 88 GL10, let me know! Will-
  9. In my post here, http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=94470 Gloyale mentions that many part places have incorrect listing for parts due to the similarity of subaru names (GL, DL) among different motors and several trans options. For example, a clutch I was looking at on feebay was actually for an ea81 and not for my GL10 at all. So my question is, short of having the old one in hand to compare, what features can I use to see if the clutch I'm getting is correct? spline count? diameter? favorite flavor of ice cream? And, can anyone recommend an online source that is reliable in terms of shipping the correct part? This is for an '88 GL10 (turbo ea82) Thanks! Will-
  10. Hmm.... well, how do you tell the difference then? Spline count? Diameter? Any online places that are reliable for us poor shmoes out in the sticks? Thanks!
  11. Yeah, don't stop looking if it's not right. You'll be happier with a garage and you can find a place with one. I've done time in a place with no garage and it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I had to sneak into the underground parking lot at the grocery store to change my oil, lame!! (DC has a law that says you can't work on your car on the street and my place was across the street from a police station.)
  12. Yeah, I don't like autozone too much but they are the closest thing. The dudes that work there are dumber then a sack of hammers and are stoned more often then not. I just want a clutch to run for awhile before I pull the motor out so I don't want to spend a bunch of bucks on it. If people get parts wrong all the time, what would be the risk of going for this, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__Exedy-Clutch-Kit-for-1980-91-1-6L-4WD-Subaru-DL-GL_W0QQitemZ7977088310QQadiZ2865QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116 Thanks! Will-
  13. Excellent, thanks Gloyale. Bratman18 - nobody was asking for the whole vin, I was at some online places and they would say "such and such item fits vin 5" For example, go to autozone.com and try looking up a clutch for a GL10 you'll see what I'm talking about.
  14. Actually I was mostly talking about which position. I know the VIN contains a bunch of info about configuration of the car. but the sites don't ever mention which position they're talking about. Thanks! Will-
  15. I've been cruising various auto parts places for cheapo clutch kits for my '88 GL10. They all want to know if my car is a vin 4, vin 5, vin 7. I understand they're talking about one of the vin number positions, but can anyone tell me which? Thanks! Will-
  16. Didn't I read on here someplace that Forresters had a problem with the rear wheel bearings? You might do a search on that. Sounds like a nice ride though! Will-
  17. Yeah, this combo may end up being a transmission-eater, I'm still researching that, but some of the VW configurations used with this engine aren't all that far off.
  18. It's gonna be a fun project. I've got two of them that were dropped in my lap and a buddy knowledgeable in all things bio-diesel and WVO. I am in no way, shape, or form, a believer in bio diesel as a viable alternative for the nation as a whole. But as just a lone shmoe who happens to have the resources to take a whack at it, why not? If it all works out, I'll have a sweet 4x4 wagon that gets 40+ miles to the gallon. Of course with the price of diesel compared to gas I really wouldn't save anything if I ran straight diesel (I would have to do better then 50mpg to equal 30 mpg in gas), I could come out ahead if I can get a stable source of veggie oil. We'll see.
  19. I'm not sure if I'm understanding you properly, but if I am the idea then would be to use the same EA version flywheel as the trans came from? I'm making an adapter plate and I need to indicate the locations of the bell-housing bolt pattern, the starter center location and bolt locations, and the input shaft center location. So I don't think that the starter "height" is important just yet, but that will be good info later on. Thanks! Will-
  20. Even if it's not Subaru360, you might consider him, I respect his posts and he's gotten positive words from some USMB "old timers". Bet he could help you out. Will-
  21. I agree, the mechanic forgot or misassembled (is that a word?) something when he/she was buttoning up. Take it back and let them drive it, they shouldn't complain. Good Luck! Will-
  22. Here's mud in yer eye eh? Yeah, that slick mud is almost as bad as ice if it's deep enough huh? Time for a trip to the JY for an upgrade:banana: I hear ya, my little girls (1 year old 100% purebred mutt) and 10 year old (another "pound special") always give me the evil eye whenever I go play with my buddy and his husky. They're like, "you rump roast, don't even lie to us, I KNOW you were out with another dog, I can smell his fur ya know!!" Will-
  23. I don't know anything about 5spd swaps, but I can tell you that others on here and going to want to know what year, model, trans etc. you're talking about. Good Luck! Will-
