  1. Hi, i'm Pete and I own an 82 wag and an 86 hatch. I'm looking for some folks to learn some things about old school subarus from. I've learned a lot from here already, from a nonexistant mechanical background. If anyone ever wants to wrench around with a motivated noob, let me know. Hope this didn't sound too lame
  2. Thanks Skip. It looks like something i could probably tackle, although the instructions are rather vague. Is there any chance of something like a step by step diagram being available. Methinks this can be done with a bit more direction. As GD suggested, this would be a fix that would allow me time to work up to the 5 spd swap, which ultimately seems like the long tem solution. *edit* - I must be overthinking this whole thing. Basically an 8mm bolt will drop right into the hole where the roll pins are/were, so all that needs to be done is the sawing of the slit in the sleeve for clamping force? My question now, is how do you get the rod out of the sleeve or vice versa?!
  3. Thanks for the thorough response, although i hate to hear the truth of the matter. With no welding skills, no garage, and minimal tools... it looks like i'm stuck with #7 for a while until i find someone local a little more mechanically equipped than i to show me the way to #1. I'm not a complete bozo and am motivated to learn;)
  4. On my 86 hatch, it seems as if the shifter is moving towards the passenger side. A week ago it was tough to get into reverse, yesterday it was a 5 minute PITA, and now it won't go into reverse at all. 4th is where reverse should be and 1st is where 3rd should be. Tried to search something up but to no avail. WTF is up with my tranny ?
  5. What a shame. That hood had the scoops on the sides and everything too. Thanks for the quick answer.
  6. So i found out the hard way today that the grill and round headlight assemblies from an 81 brat do not fit on an 86 hatch. Probably stupid to even try it, but it would have looked sweet! Anyway, i have some credit towards parts @ PAP and was wondering if the awesome hood off the same brat (81), would work on an 82 wagon? What models could i pull doors off of and have them fit an 82 wag ? Thanks in advance.
  7. No offense was intended towards you or other board members... could just be the tourists, but i call it how i see it... I've lived down the hill from tahoe for a while and am up there a couple times a month. As far as yachts go, keep 'em. I'd rather have my 16 foot Zodiac behind an old school soob anyday.
  8. Tahoe is full of yuppy yachtie folk who carry the big logo boxes on top of their new soobs year 'round to fit in with their wheatgrass shootin' buddies. I've seen one ea81 up there and less than five ea82's. Puget Sound is definately where it's at, although Portland may very well be too - i've never stayed there for more than just passing through.
  9. I was indeed under that impression. Thank you for clearing that up. Oh well if anyone reads this with a DL there is a 1982 1600 FSM on ebay for 10 bucks BIN.
  10. I knew it was an EA81 by the casting, but from this page it seems there are 2 versions of the EA81. No designation of which vehicle has what though.
  11. Simple question. I'm looking for a manual for my 82 4wd GL Wagon, and i am unsure about the size of the engine. Any advice appreciated.
  12. Hey TomR., Any ideas on treating rust ? Any experience w/Rust-Mort like Indrid cold suggests? I'm not too worried about it, because it's in the desert now, but it looks pretty gnarly. New doors would solve some of the problem, but the area which you would jack your car up, under the doors, on the body ( name ?! ) is pretty shot as well. As a matter of fact, as i changed my 3rd tire in a week, the jack pushed right up and bent the heck out of the metal with rust showering the ground. I'm probably not jacking it up correctly, but it's the way that makes the most sense to me. I wish i were taught these things in school, as opposed to irrelevant jibber jabber :-\
  13. I'm addicted! Here's my new 86 hatch that i traded straight across for a non-op 1980 westfalia. Looks beautiful and runs like champ, i'm picking her up tuesday!
  14. Thanks for the warm welcome ! There seems to be a lot of potential, although the rust issue seems to be pretty bad. All the doors are rusted through. I had to swap tires today and as i was jacking, lots of rust was falling from that area. No holes in the floor and the chassis is solid, so it may not be all that bad :-\ I've got the temp sticker in the windshield, might as well use the free 30 days of registration the DMV offers.
  15. I stumbled upon this site trying to eat up as much info as i could about older subarus. Great information hub ! Anyway, this is my first post, and i figured i would share some pics of my soob with everyone. Typical rats nest when i got it, not much has changed since other than a complete gutting of the interior to literally clean out fossilized mice and all that comes along with them... Obviously not pretty, but he runs like a champ.
