Not that I would know but I had a 97 2.2 that did that same thing. It had a very tiny radiator leak for years that was ok if I kept filling now and then, but in summer once I forgot for a while and so even when I eventually did add to the bottle it didn't have enough in engine? I sold it because I thought it was shot but I still see that darned thing driving around sometimes. Back then it had like 330k on it, and that was 2 years ago+.

Ok, so I got my timing belt kit replaced on my 95 2.2 the other day. (This was the one I wrote about a while back that had a gusher coming out of the tb cover.) Everything seems kosher regarding the kit change, the mechanic said it was the driver's cam seal went bad. But now I'm back to the "original leak(s)" I had. Very small, but I wondered if anyone could recommend a great oil product that may repair small leaks and possible protect from any damage I may have cause while driving it on that one or two quarts for a short while? I've actually been thinking about returning to Mobil1 in this car, which I used to run religiously in my old 97. For the seals' sake especially. Thanks for any help. (Once again). Dan

all i was saying about the head gaskets needing to be replaced, was that struck me immediately as odd, because if you're going to go out and buy a replacement engine, how much percentage will it need those gaskets, probably not much, so it suggests a whole other range of problems that could have happened. it's being presented as a plus, when i'd much rather knowing the 2.2s, have it not ever been mentioned. just that they put a replacement engine in and "listen to that!" (sound of hardly any sound being heard...) Oh, and here in Houston we have this place now that sells used engines right from Japan. They offer the 2.2 and 2.0? Would anyone know where/what the 2.0's might come from? I thought maybe for that high of gas mileage maybe they bought one of these factory resold models with lesser displacement...

but you have to check the actual month of 96 production on the door frame. I had a 97 that was made in 96, and yet it was an interference. Below is a post I had written in that has to do with the changover months, but it's more about the tensioner, but you get the gist. I forget whether the changeovers are the same month for tensioner and interference or not, because actually my 97 had the old tensioner and WAS an interference. Ultimately the only sure way I believe is to look inside the heads, but it's better to err thinking it is interference than not. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=85339&page=2

yes, and the month of production in 96 determines whether it's an interference engine or not, and which hydraulic tensioner you need for the timing belt kit, etc. I had a 97 that was made in 96, but it was after the changover, so it was an interference. Strangely though, it used the older tensioner.

But then if they replaced the engine, why would they also have done the head gaskets on the new one? Routine maint on a used 2.2? Naaahhh. I'd want to see the receipts where they got the engine from, to know its history a little, and/or get the vin number of the engine that's in the car to see if it was original matching it against car title or wherever that info's printed. I would definitely have it looked at. You don't say where you live but here in Houston there's a service where they'll check it completely over for 100 if you drive it there. To me that seems like a pretty high amount for that many miles, but tht would be right in Colorado. I saw a '92 just recently (in El Paso) with 190K on it for 750. The list of parts replaced, too, it's good they did the timing belt and wp but (I just had mine done and went through the whole parts list to get together, where to buy the seals, other parts, etc) there's a whole litany of different choices you'll find here on USMB about preferences of who like to buy which thermostat (look at sticky at top of page) where to buy crank seal, cam seals, oil pump o-ring, pulleys, hyd. tensioner. You can find kits with all these parts on ebay, which I used last t-belt job, but this time I went more with piecing it together, seals from Subaru, kit from Contitech including Aisin wp. I'd want to know who did the t-belt job and what did they replace, etc? If the pulleys have never been replaced, then you're looking at a potential disaster when one falls apart in there. So you're gonna have to get the whole job done again anyways.

Okay, not to hijack my own post, but can anyone expand this topic to be "91 vs 95 EJ22 comparison?" I am looking at a 91 Legacy. I still have the tb kit for my 95. Do you think it would work on a 91? Just checking. My 95 has so many issues I may just dispense with it, or keep as 2nd. Thanks again. Dan

what brand of anaerobic do you prefer? Is that a Subaru part, or by who? And there are two oil pump o-rings, I thought just one? (This is a 95 2.2) When I look at the Permatex anerobic, I see three products. http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/automotive_gasketing/anaerobic_gasket_makers.htm High temp, regular, or gasket maker? Thanks again. Dan

Hey all. Can anyone please tell me the various uses for Ultra Grey vs. Black? Like, I'm gonna get my oil pump resealed with my timing belt kit replacement. Can anyone tell me if Ultra Black is ok for this? He says he uses this. I hate to tell the mechanic what to do, or supply him with parts/supplies, but... Thanks again, '97

well, then you've answered the question yourself. if the waterpump was completely seized you need to go inside and check/change all pulleys and do complete timing belt service. including oil pump resealing and o-ring, you might even want a new oil pump, (can find "cheap" oem on ebay), but that's my own opinion. the thing is, you can imagine the pressure/tension on all tb parts when that belt in said seized state torqued your system. well i'm looking right here at the new wp i got with the tb kit for my 95, and it's a smooth pulley... but yeah, if at like 225,000 you changed only the wp and belt, that's a sure recipe for problems. you gotta think, those pulleys and idlers, have been turning (and or sitting) in temp changes etc for like almost 20 years? (If they've never been changed.) I'd definitely go with John, and take the tb cover off and check it out. before driving anymore. '97

How many miles on the car & how long since the timing belt was changed? That noise in the video sounds like a water pump, but it's kind of hard to tell exactly without standing in front of car. Does it sound like it's coming from underneath the front of engine on driver's side? That's where the wp is. I had a water pump make that sound for a while and still drove it. It was amazing how much play there was in its bearing after they took it out, and it still worked. I finally was motivated to get it done after coolant poured through the bearing. But I suppose it could just break inside where it wasn't turning at all, or since the thermostat's right there inside the wp it's not functioning or damaged thus causing coolant blockage. But the other main thing you have to worry about other than coolant problems is the timing belt also drives the wp, and you'd better get the whole belt kit and pulleys changed along with wp. Most kits come with one. (Example: search ebay for "master timing belt kit" and it should come up with importexperts. You don't want the timing to slip etc by play in wp, but the 95 is not an interference engine.

thanks for the help. as usual. i don't for the life of me remember where i got that idea about the crushed copper one. it wasn't the one that seals between the wp and engine, it was the one that sits inside the bowl. Or maybe the guy had to buy a new bowl because that has a gasket in the lip of it? I know he had put it all together and i drove it and it was leaking from between the bowl and wp. Thanks again. Dan

I know it's hard to find a mechanic that you can believe in. If you go to this page: http://www.cartalk.com/ and register, then you can go to the "mechanics files" link and it should show recommended mechanics in meridian. (I tried it with a meridian zip, 39305, and it only came up with two shops but meridian's pretty small so that's prob all people have written in about.) But it's a start. I have a very fond memory of meridian. When I moved from PA down to my sister's in TX, I brought 4 cats with me in 2 carriers, and had no A/C. in my Sube. I arrived in Meridian in the afternoon, this was June, and boy was it hot. There was actually a bar/gambling type place in the real old part of downtown, the old thick-masonry buildings, and they let me store my cats in the carriers along the cool walls and i had some beers while it cooled down outside. Never forget it. A whole 'nother world from PA, I'll tell you. Real nice tho. I couldn't believe it when he said, "Yeah, sure, bring em in!" Dan
