  1. yup- tires are matching and in decent shape. How long can I drive this thing in fwd? Any downsides? I guess I'll start looking for a tranny....
  2. UPDATE: Okay- fresh tranny fluid and 1/2 a bottle of lucas additive didn't make a difference... I did disable the AWD and in FWD mode it didn't have a problem in a tight turn. Also, no CV boots torn on any of the 4 wheels that I can see or feel... Am I screwed yet?:-\
  3. Big - That's been my solution so far - just go straight! Thanks for the clarification, Skip - Could the extreme cold weather have brought on these symptoms?
  4. I'm still not clear on if you can have TB in an auto trans.... I'm going to start with a fluid check - should I run some sea foam or something through it? I'll check the boots as well.
  5. Thanks Skip - perfect description. Does torque bind happen on autos or only man. trans? could I check for this problem by disabling the RWD with the little fuse thingy on the firewall?
  6. It definately feels like a differential problem - could it be fluid? Am I totally screwed? How tough is it to replace? I have a sinking feeling...
  7. searching for "torque bind" now - what the heck is that? It certainly describes the feeling... BTW it is an automatic trans.... thanks all
  8. okay - yet another new problem with my legacy - when making a tight turn, like in to a parking place, it makes a weird dragging, binding kind of a vibration in the front end - I'm thinking that this is not good.... any suggestiions much appreciated...
  9. Skip, you are the best. Sorry I didn't reply earlier - my rural internet went out for a day in the storm. You do indeed rock! Photos and everything! Thanks a bunch. I found, and pulled the cable - it seems to have just come loose- I put it back in and it works, but it vibrates a bit - oh well - good thing, 'cause noplace seems to have a replacement except the dealer... Thanks again bro!
  10. Well, I was just chuckling over the posts about noisy speedo cables in cold weather - mine does it too! Well, this morning mine stopped making the noise - when the speedo stopped working completely. I don't find a replacement cable anywhere at the online parts places - about to start calling around the local parts stores. There is also nothing in the Haynes book about replacing it. Anyone have experience with this? It's a turbo, auto trans - does it even have a cable? Hmmm- I'm about to suit up and go crawl under and look - at least it's above zero today!
  11. Thanks again for all the advice! It ran okay today - did about 70 miles on the interstate and in town. Is it possible that one of these sensors caught some junk and then cleared off? As I said, it hadn't been driven much for a while. Maybe I'll pull out the tps over the weekend and take a look...
  12. Hmmm - could be! I'll let you know after I take it on the highway today - thanks for the edgey-ma-kay-shun!
  13. Thanks! Hmmm, that's interesting - the day it started acting up, I did hear a weird noise from the dash behind the speedo - I thought it was just a rattle and I gave it the good ol' fonzie fist and it stopped- maybe I knocked a sensor loose? or maybe was a symptom of an exisitng problem...
  14. Weird! My new 91 has a set of old school big fogs - it also has a little toggle set in the empty slot next to the fog-light switch - no idea what it is - oh, the joys of a new car with no background info!
  15. Thanks Homeys! I ran the diagnostics suggested by Mr. WTDash - "current problems" mode flashed continually (don't know what that means - off to do more web crawling), "previous problems" flashed 3 long, 2 short, 3 long, 3 short - 32,33, as I understand it (this is all new to a cave dweller such as myself) which according to the chart is vehicle speed sensors? How does this fit in with Mr. Porcupines theory? But get this - I took it out and beat it a little bit, and it didn't do it (no drop out of od, no power light flashing on) - possibly dirty sensors from sitting in all summer? The dude who had it before me didn't drive it much in the last year. Regardless, I appreciate the feedback. I'm a little warry of these new (less than 20 yr old) scoobs, but I decided to give it a go - one thing is for sure - this thing don't run like a GL wagon! Scarey quick!
  16. Hey Y'all - First post here - I used to hang out on the "older" side when I ran GLs, but I took a leap and picked up a 91 legacy turbo, and almost immediately started having issues with it dropping out of overdrive on the highway. RPMs jump up, "power" light comes on, then it kicks back to normal. It has what appears to be an overdrive overide at the base of the shifter by the gear indicator panel, an I right about that? I pushed it, no light or indicator to tell me it was doing anything...is it possible that swich is bad or something? Any thoughts are much appreciated! R
