  1. Hello, I am in the process of cutting out some rust from the rocker panels on my 1984 GL wagon. I bought some 1985 Leone rocker panels, thinking they were the right ones, they're not. They are a little short. I plan on using rivets, and carbon fiber, and , sigh, likely bondo. Suggestions? mkoch
  2. I would like to know what these relays are. Here are a couple of pictures and a video. Thanks for any help on this! https://goo.gl/photos/WMvog46RqkaT4u8e9 https://goo.gl/photos/J11d48W25VJw8JFa9
  3. This is the "before" photo. I took a wire wheel to the inside of my passenger side quarter panel, removed the surface rust, and then applied Rust Bullet. I have learned from experience, it is important to attack any and all rust. It will only get worse. I think I saved my quarter panel!
  4. I need to take my door apart on my '84 GL. I cannot remove the crank, how should I do it?
  5. I need to buy some touch up paint for my 1984 Subaru. The paint code is 17. Do I need to use a clear coat over top?
  6. A picture of the hatch. The section to the left of the emblem was sanded and polished.
  7. I cut out some rust on the battery tray, in preparation for Rust Bullet. I removed some oxidized paint from the hatch.
  8. Thanks for the pics 1982gl4! You are helping move this project along more than you know. And, the job you did in the build-thread, just wow.
  9. Rust patrol. I sanded down some rusty spots, and applied Rust Bullet. I tore out the much of the interior in preparation of installing new rocker panels.
  10. Heya, 1982gl4, Thanks for the build thread. I the rocker panels arrived. Here is a video where I describe the problem, Could I just replace the lower part of the rocker panel? mkoch
  11. I have a 1984 GL Wagon 4wd. The muffler is rusty, and it looks like Autozone, RockAuto don't have it. Oddly enough, catastrophic converters are still available. I better buy one. Does this have to be a custom job?
  12. Yep, they rust from the inside out. This looked pristine half an hour ago, then I started using a wire brush. Much of the car is not rusty, and I feel I can get a few more years out of it. I found rocker panels at this placehttps://www.millsupply.com/auto-body-rust-repair-panels/subaru/ After I order the part, what's the next step? The rest of the car really is in great condition
  13. My 1984 GL 4wd is approaching 200,000 miles, and I plan to replace the front axles, struts, bearings, and calipers. Did I miss anything? While that area is dis-assembled, I would like to do the easy fixes now, so they don't have to be done later.
  14. Here is a pic of the flasher unit. It is very difficult to reach! Other threads mention removing the frame which holds the fuse box. I was able to reach up with a screwdriver and unscrew the flasher unit. It is a very tight fit! I removed the driver's seat in order to have room to work. I will put the replacement flasher in a more accessable location. mkoch
  15. Here is a link to a video. At 19 seconds there is what looks like a relay, with black, yellow, and green wires going to it. Is this the flasher unit? It is tough to get to! <edited to add..> The flasher unit is in the video at 19 seconds, on the left side of the screen. mkoch
  16. I have an exhaust problem with my 1984 GL wagon. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/weimadog/media/IMG_1068_zpsf20d217a.mp4.html The video explains the problem. I found it by connecting a shop vac to the exhaust pipe, and listening for the hiss. That's a lot more pleasant than getting under a car and dealing with a hot exhaust. One bold is rusted in place, the other one is still springy. What's the solution for this one?
  17. 1984 GL 4wd wagon, All four of the boots are ripped on the front axles. The CV joints are not causing any problems. I would like to replace the boots without removing the whole axle from the car. That is, remove the DOJ, and slide a boot over to the CV joint. What boots, and source, are recommended for this task?
  18. About a year ago, I found a curb in a snowbank also! It caused a bent rear rim, bent suspension arm, and no other damage. I hope your repair will be as simple as mine was.
  19. Thanks for sharing this! No charge for the remote fuel filler door release!
  20. Hello,

I need better lights on my '84 GL wagon. Where did you get your Hella conversion?

  21. I am also looking for one. I found this, which could be useful when you do the swap: http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/parts/84/subaru/gl/windshield_seals/windshield_seal.html?3593=8398
  22. I have noticed the same thing. I am wondering why there are not as many corresponding wagons for sale. It looks like the number of available GL wagons for sale has gone down for a couple of years.
  23. I removed a panel, sanded off the rust, and applied Rustoleum Rust Reformer. I plan to treat one part every week.
  24. I just installed a Weber Carburetor (electric choke) on my EA81 1984 GL Wagon. I just tried to start the engine, and the idle was very rough. The engine would not go above about 500 rpm, if that much. The exhaust does not smell strongly of gasoline. I smells more like coolant, with maybe a bit of gasoline. There is coolant on the outside of the intake manifold, as shown in the photo. Could something I did during the installation of the Weber cause a coolant leak? This one has me baffled, because of the location. The view in the photo is looking at the front of the engine. The distributor is on the left. What could cause this, and what can I do to fix it?
