I am in Missouri, where there just are not very many 2nd generation Subarus on the road, or in the parts yards. I need a recommendation for a parts yard that will ship rear suspension components. Thanks for any advice!

1984 GL Wagon, new front brake pads, new rotors, adjusted the parking brake. I need to put new carpet in. I'll save that for warmer weather! mkoch

I am replacing the front pads and rotors on my 1984 GL 4WD wagon. I am following the instructions in How To Keep Your 72 thru 84 Subaru Alive, by Larry Owens. The instructions call for "PBC" grease to lubricate the pad springs, and "Silicone" grease to lubricate the pivot pin. I could not find these products at my local auto parts store. I have Master Pro Hi-Temp Disc Brake Wheel Bearing grease, NLGI No. 2 and Multi Purpose Lithium Grease Are these sorts of grease an acceptable substitute for the PBC and Silicone grease? mkoch

After I posted, I added difluoroethane (Blow Off brand, canned propellant) to the cold-chisel attack. That Blow Off stuff is cold!. It took about a minute to chill the split cone, then it came off. No puller needed! Sorry for the needless question.

(edited to say, problem solved) Greetings all, Here is a photo of my replace-the-rotors project. The photo is of the passenger side front axle, and split center piece. My problem is, the split center piece just won't come out. I've tried the hammer/cold chisel around the perimeter method. It is still stuck. Does the split center piece have to come out before I use the drum puller? I don't want to use the drum puller (disc puller in this case) if that will only force the cone tighter.

Your GL looks a lot like mine! I am replacing the rotors, and axles on mine. The axles have been going "tick tick" for over a year.

I don't know of the interchangeability from year to year, as mentioned above, but the part numbers for the '84 non-turbo are Disks, front 7254 31090 Pad kit 7251 91074 I'll post a review of my experience with Rock Auto. Thanks for the advice!

It's a double-barrel cannon too! The 6 inch round ductwork looked so cool on top of the Subaru, I just had to take a picture.

I am looking for a source for a quality water pump, to order online. The story why is below: Today was an interesting day for me and a passenger. For the past 500 miles or so, there was a rattle or knocking at idle, to up to about 2000 rpm. It sounded like a loose heat shield on the exhaust system, so I did not put a repair at high priority. At highway speed today, I started hearing what sounded like pinging at about 3,500 rpm and above. It was a little worse under load. I noticed the car was running hot (when I looked down the temp gauge was pegged in the red). I pulled onto the side of the highway, let the engine cool enough that I could look down the fill hole for the radiator, and I saw no coolant. I drove another 1/2 mile, with the engine merely hot (as opposed to pull-over-now-hot) to a place with radiator fluid. I put about a quart in the radiator, while the engine was running. The alternator belt started smoking, and I noticed the water pump was seized. I don't know the condition of the pump before I put the radiator fluid in. My AAA membership paid for itself today! I would like to know the best place to order Subaru water pumps online.

I just bought a 1984 GL 4wd wagon! After 14 years without a Subaru, it feels good to drive one again. I bought the car without personally inspecting it. The seller told me he was not mechanically inclined, and he did the best he could to describe it. Here is a picture of the front passenger side DOJ boot As you can see, it is beginning to rip, and needs to be replaced. Amazingly, the car doesn't make any grinding sounds going down the road, or around a corner. I heard on Click 'n' Clack the a whole rebuilt drive shaft assembly can now be purchased, for what a CV joint used to cost. Are there any good companies where I can order the drive shaft assembly?

I just had a 1984 GL Wagon 4wd delivered to me. The key can be removed with the ignition still on. I thing the shipper left the ignition on while the car was being transported. It may have been left on for four days. The battery now will not take a charge from a plug-in charger, 6 amp. The starter relay clicks after about 1/8 turn on the engine. Maybe the coil, or the Electronic Control Unit were damaged? I'd like to know what might not be o.k. now. mkoch

Hello, I plan to soon be the owner of a 1984 GL Wagon. Years ago,I had an '81, which had a passing light. Knowing how cool one of those can be, I purchase a passing light assembly for the new car. I can't find a wiring diagram for it in the Bentley book. I now realize this assembly is far from "plug and play", and I will have to do more than just run current to it. Does the passing light circuit have some relays in it? I have drawn out a quick 'n' dirty wiring diagram of the passing light assembly. The big rectangle with numbers represents the six terminal plug on the passing light unit. The unit seems to work, as the light lights, the motor goes, and the position sensor (for lack of a better term) makes and breaks contacts. Any suggestions or information on this would be appreciated.

Will an '86 black roof bar fit on an '84 GL Wagon roof? The roof bar I am referring to screws into the long slots, which have sliding keys. I want a stock roof bar for an '84 wagon, and I may be able to buy one from an '86.
