Axle stubs: are these just a direct swap from the internal to the external axle stub type? Or is there machining that needs to be completed?
-
EA82 is what I would be hoping to use it for. I am assuming that the newer style is a stronger method?
-
Good! Does it come on stock on something older that has the external axle stubs?
-
Opps, no, I just didn't think about what I was typing, I completely spaced on that. Question 1 deleted. What 4.44 diffs bolt directly in? Thank Gloyale for the info!
-
After doing some research I ended up with more questions than answers. If anyone has any more information I would be very grateful. Statement 1) R160 4.44 Gearing only came on some 98-03 2.5RS's? False - It also comes stock on: Some new models as well, Manual Outbacks and Forresters? Statement 2) R160's with 4.44 gears only come with "inverted" (there must be a better term) axle connection rather than the axle stubs we (the EA82 crowd) are use to? True - Not certian though Statement 3) The cv axles can be modified to make the inverted or inner axle stub work with the EA82 axles? Maybe True? inner CV joint off of the EA's can be modified to make the internal axle stub work, although I don't know the specifics. Question 2) Can the ring and pinion of the 4.44 fit into the 3.9 R160 case? Question 3) Can the axle stubs be changed so that the external axle stubs can be placed on the 4.44 r160 housing? Unproven Please correct any of the statements if they are incorrect. Thank you guys for any/all of your help!

1998 - 2003 2.5RS Auto, rear diff question
Knichol replied to Knichol's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Ahh, I figured short and to the point so people don't have to wade through more info than needed (although I obviously put more than needed to get people ask'n other questions) that way, if someone needed to swap in newer rear ends in these old rigs, reguardless if they have a matched front diff, matched gearing in the trans, different sized front/rear tires, removed front cv axles, etc, they would have the straight facts... anyways it didn't work so well. -

Awesome... Do you know if you can convert it over to the external/male axle stubs, or is the only known way is to convert the axle? Is this what Storm was talking about in this thread? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67019&highlight=differences+diff -
1998 - 2003 2.5RS Auto, rear diff question
Knichol replied to Knichol's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I apologize for wording my question in a confusing manner. Let me try it again. Are all rear Subaru r160's interchangeable? If they are different how are they different? (axle stubs, flanges, mounting points, etc) More specifically do the late 90's early 2000s interchange with the older EA's r160? I honestly appreciate your other concerns but the question above is all I am looking for and answer for. -

1998 - 2003 2.5RS Auto, rear diff question
Knichol replied to Knichol's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Yes, thats why I am getting two! Sorry for the title difference. I believe that the 4.44 gearing was available from 98-2003 in the 2.5rs but the two specific years i am looking at are 99 and 2001. I am not looking for an LSD style. (I assumed they were open i am not too in tuned with newer subaur facts.) -
I am looking swapping out my old R160's with 3.9 ratio in my 91 loyale and relpacing them with 1999 and a 2001 rear diffs out of 2.5RS's with the 4.44 ratio. Unfortuately I would have to buy them site unseen. Can anyone help me out and tell me if the New R160's are the same as the older R160's? I am assuming the basically are, but may have either, different mounting brackets or axle stubs. Thanks once again for the help.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think I mean tubing, nothing thick wall like schedule 40 pipe. I have tried those cheap pipe benders you can pick up for 100 buck or so and it just kinks the tubing I want to bend. Tubing size to match what my bumpers are now, I would have to measure. Then smaller tubing for a basket lets say 1 inch or 3/4 inch.
-
Scott, you have the bender at your shop? If I purchace some dies i need, and keep'em there for you to use, would you let me use the bender?
-
The OBDII harness should be long enough that you can run it through the firewall on the passengers side, in and below the radio area, and then to the same area as the EA82 ECU. You will have to make up some different brackets to mount it. That's what I did in mine and it seems to work fine, I don't know if you're going to keep the OBDII plug for a scan tool but if you are, I just mounted mine in the blank panel below the radio face plate. (I don't have the stock head unit) Easy access for laptop plug in and you don't have any cords at peoples feet.

*Mods please move it in wrong place* Looks like Subaxtreme is back up and running. Has anyone ever purchaced anything from these guys? I know Forrestranger or whatever the Forrester with the D/R Trans swaped into it, had the skid plate or "sump guard". Anyone else running any of thier stuff? http://www.subaxtreme.com.au/

So very true! Do you agree it's a night an day difference between the feel of a stock wagon and a lifted/loaded wagon? Although I am impressed with the fact that even with a load on the roof rack it doesn't feel as tippy as I thought it would. As for the Magnetic Breaking system, while indesign can you design me one of those hover boards they have in back to the future... I really want one:banana:
-
Did that! Do this, 99.9% of the time anyways, but I am always amazed how often people don't do this, especially coming down a long mountain road! My key question was in a panic situation. I like dogs, I don't really want to hit one if it comes running out of the woods and you have no warning. (Which is what just happened) I would agree if it were stock, but the three lifted subs I've tested, with at least 27" tires and extra weight in steel bumpers, winches, skid plates roof racks, batteries, and gear = panic stopping, not so good. I was just looking to see if anyone has tried any other brake mods, other than the typical 5 lug and EA82 turbo disc swaps? Anyone?
-
I agree, that was one of the first upgrades I did. With alot of the guys now running 15" rims, I am hoping someone has started looking into bigger discs possiblities for the fronts.
-
As my subaru gets bigger and heavier it's seem to have lost the ability to reasonabliy stop in a panic situation. (Yes my brake system is good, no air in the lines, and the pads for all four discs are almost new) I know others notice the lack of braking power with larger tires and extra weight but what have you looked into to try and fix it. Has anyone tried anything with larger front brakes? (disc, calipers, pads)
