*sigh* going to take the plunge into EJ swappageness!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
well I've started getting pieces together already. I found a 5-speed tranny from an old parts Impreza that LUVMYBRAT got his EJ22 from. I don't think we grabbed the rear diff though so I'll have to figure out what ratio the tranny has as a final drive and see if I can't get me another one. I also think I have the driveshaft as well from the Impreza but thats another thing I'm going to have to see if its with the engine and tranny. But I do have a tranny and clutch/flywheel setup. Hopefully once I get some parts sold, I'll be able to go pick up that EJ20K and if the "G" intake won't work on it, I'll have to get me an intake to work with the "K" engine. But I'll ask on the new gen forum as well:brow: I thinkthe Impreza parts car was a cable clutch but I can't say for sure. If it is, then sweet cause I got my old pedal cluster from the RX with a brand new OEM cable. If not, well then it'll be time to source some more parts:-\ -
PROBLEMS!!! Need some MORE help plz
Caboobaroo replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you need small parts for an EA82T man, just give me a shout! I have a half dozed nonspyder intakes just laying around with good parts in them. 3 are complete, the rest are in different stages of tear down, I have one thats nothing but the intake itself. Let me know, just charge the shipping to you depending on the parts:headbang: -

my brother in law has a '73 Scout II in almost mint condition. Its in Wyoming though but you could fly down and pick it up. Only $4500 -

of course I'll be hanging out with the old schoolers, I mean, it'll be in a '87 GL coupe! Plus, I'm always into the older Subarus then the newer ones. Anyways, you have to remember, my current mode of transportation is either my feet, my $800 mountain bike, or a ride to work so I'm more inclinded to get it running ASAP, not portmatch the intake and the heads. More time then I'm willing to spend:rolleyes: -

Thanks Dave, I'll check with the guy and see if that intake will work for that engine. He's from AWDpirates but has recently joined up here (Matt Monson). Numbchux - I'm not too worried about the higher RPMs with cruising. I mean, I had a '78 Brat and I would do 80mph down the freeway with the stock 4-speed. Granted, it was screaming a bit, it still didn't give me any grief later on... until the alternator died:rolleyes: So Phil, if you can source me the parts I need, how much would all that run for say? I still have a clutch and flywheel that I can machine for free but I can also get a driveshaft shortened for pretty cheap up here as well. And would the EJ22T manifold work on the EJ20K? -

Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
yeah I kinda figured that as much. But a good thing is the 3.7 final drive will let it cruise at a lower RPM on the freeway. Plus, I'm currently at 7200 feet above sea level so with the air being as thin as it is up here, I think I should be fine:burnout: -

Well I just had a thought, so I'll see what everyone else thinks of this. I currently have the RX gearbox and the cost of another tranny would be a bit more then what I could get for my RX box. So here's my thought. What if I use the EJ20K engine and just use the adapter plate to bolt it up to my tranny, use my stock LSD, then save money for the AWD 5-speed tranny and rear diff, along with doing the rear axles to work with an EJ rear diff. Would that RX box handle the power all right or would I end up blowing it to pieces? -

ok so now we're gonna unhijack my thread and keep going. I think I figured out the radiator situation, gonna use my stock EA82T radiator I had in the RX with the dual electric fans I have mounted on it as well. Sourced an EJ20K without turbo or intercooler, but has the wiring, ECU and an intake from an EJ20G that the guy said would work with the engine and wiring. $950 for the engine so now I just have to source a tranny and rear end:clap: So next question, what fuel pump should I run with this engine? I have 2 EA82T fuel pumps, the stock SPFI fuel pump in the coupe currently, but I can pick up a WRX fuel pump for a reasonable price. Thoughts? Suggestions? -
just unbolt the whole front subframe from the '81, unbolt the front subframe from your '79 and swap them. Its easy. Only thing is, remember what GD said about the wiring. If you are calm enough, you can unsnake the wiring from the '81 and snake it into your '79. So then you'll have all the wiring for the tranny, engine, and the GL cluster on the '81 with no hassles, unless the wiring harness in the '81 is FUBAR'd. It would take about a day to swap it all starting early in the morning and working late into the night. They're pretty easy to tear down and put back together, especially when you have a friend helping:headbang:

but a Supra can't light up 4 tires from a stoplight like my RX could:brow: -

I don't wanna mess with the inside of the engine at all. Just want to drop it in and go. Maybe later down the road but that'll be awhile yet:-p I do have my 3" bellmouth downpipe I'm gonna put on it:brow: -

probably cut the lip off the top of the core support to get it to mount in there right. Only thing I can think of doing to get a taller radiator to fit in there... -

ok just did a search and read up on Daves conversion into his wagon since there was more details then his coupe. Found out the front section of the driveline needs to be shortened 55mm, got the part number for the races for the rear axles but nothing too specific on wiring. So another question, since my coupe is an SPFI AT car, is this going to be more difficult as far as wiring for me or is it going to be about the same amount of work? Also, once I figure out what engine I'm getting (year and such), hopefully there will be a few people on here that can help me figure out the wiring. I'm pretty sure I can figure it out for the most part but just in case I get stuck somewhere. -

Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
because the coupe is much straighter bodywise, not a speck of rust anywhere, and the RX currently is partially gutted suspension and drivetrain wise. 970subaru - I saw those on ebay as well but they looked like they were missing the rear diff. Any thoughts on those setups? Would those work instead of trying to get a full front cut? Another thing I thought of was the driveshaft. I am pretty sure a custom one is in order but I'm not entirely positive. Some opinions would be great. My new radiator is all metal and I have 2 electric fans on it so I think I'll mod that one before I go hunting for an EJ radiator. beataru - I've had enough with the "happy faces" when it comes to blowing up engines. Since I've had my RX, I've pulled the original engine out (208k miles), replaced it with a 120k mile EA82T, oilpump went south, took the bottom end with it, dropped another EA82SPFI shortblock turbo engine in there and blew the rings. Trust me, I've had more happy faces then one can shake a stick at. Just want the reliability, the cost down (RX has $8500 in it), and more power then the stock EA82T. -

Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Wow, thanks for the replies everyone. I've had a few suggestions on where to look for a front cut. As of right now, I want to stay away from aftermarket everything with this swap, so I was planning with a stock harness and ECU. The radiator I was thinking of using was a brand new 2 row all metal radiator. I just bought it for my RX before it took a crap on me again so it has like 5 minutes of run time on it. Depending on how thorough the front cut it, I'll either use the EJ radiator and make it fit (woo like I can't make stuff fit into a core support) or use my new EA82T radiator. Axles, yes I am running the 25 spline RX box in my RX in which will become parts for the 5-lug conversion onto my coupe. I have yet to have a rear axle apart on an EA82 so that'll be a new challenge for me. Also, how do I know what alxle I have in the back Dave? You said there's a larger and a smaller one, just curious if there's a definate way I can tell. Now I just gotta get the funding for this project. Time to sell parts! -

Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
well I'm wanting to ditch my RX tranny in hopes for the AWD EJ 5-speed and eventually, go with an STi 6-speed with DCCD. Anyways, yes, as far as axles, one question... since I'm running an Impreza front suspension/brakes with Impreza axles, do I have to get them shortened to work with an EJ tranny in my coupe or can I just use the axles I have without any mods? Radiator... do I have to use an EJ radiator or can I use my brand new 2 core radiator that I bought for my RX, so its an EA82T radiator. I'm going to search and search and search but I'm a little tired right now as it is and these were a couple things on my mind before I go to bed. Oh, and does anyone in the Denver area get front cuts by chance? Shawn, you know of anyone? I want to go local so I don't get killed on shipping... -
So I decided next spring that I'm going to just suck it up, and swap in a EJ20G into my '87 coupe. Decided that its not really worth trying to swap engines in and get running and blah blah blah. Just going to let it sit and start getting funds together to do the swap. Then, all at once, with the help of this lovely board, I'm going to get a front cut and do the swap into it. After reading some of the tips from suberdave and a few other board members, its going to happen. Screw those underpowered EA82Ts, time for the big powa! So for my swap, I'm trying to compile a list of what I will need from the front cut for my swap... engine, tranny, wiring harness, ECU, tranny, rear end... anything else? I think I'm going to need a custom driveshaft made and when I do my swap, I'm going to put my 5-lug conversion on as well which already has Impreza parts in the front... will I still need custom axles made? Any more tips when going through this swap?

I have seen only one black GL-10 wagon. It was an '89 GL-10 turbowagon with a 4EAT in it. It was sick, but it was in the junkyard as well -

yes I do believe they are but only one way to be certain is to compare them to an RX spring... -
does the carb have any side to side play in it? If it does, then you have a loose base so crank that sucka back down!

yes they did make those in '90. Like Mick said, its a Loyale RX basically. Granted, you could get the RS model with SPFI and an automatic which were more common but for the most part, boody wise, they were RX. Some of them had the full bodykit, some of them had only the front air dam and rear spoiler, some of them were white, some were black, some were turbo, some were a FT4WD, etc. etc. etc. -

I can build a new wiring harness if you need one! I'll have to get some wiring diagrams for that year but they're pretty simple as it is:brow: -
if it was right smack dab in the center of the base of the carb, then that will be your idle mixture screw which adjusting it thinking it was the idle, will make it be a pile of poo poo (I did the same thing:rolleyes: ). The idle screw will be off to the side, I believe the driver side, basically where the throttle cable goes onto the throttle linkage.

Now that the old wagon is a mini armored tank...

I was thinking about putting a small block into my '78 Brat... but that was going to have an actual frame under it... EJ FTW!
