  2. yes, I'd go with a nonturbo tranny but there are some nonturbo trannies that have the 3.7 final drive, which are pretty rare (why I refered to them as "weird"). Most turbo final drives are a 3.7 whereas the nonturbo are 3.9
  3. But remember, thats JUST a motor. You'll need a full wiring harness, ECM, fuel lines, fuel pump, coil, MAF sensor, and a few other items to even be close to getting it to work. Now if for $650 bucks, it comes with all that, then by all mean, go for it. Also, ANY EA82 5-speed tranny will bolt onto an EA81. So you have a choice of tranny... NONTURBO: Part Time 4wd 5-speed, single range pushbutton (DL, some GLs and Loyale) Part Time 4wd 5-speed, dual range (Nonturbo GL and some Loyales) Full Time 4wd 5-speed, single range with locking center diff (XT6) TURBO: Part Time 4wd 5-speed, single range pushbutton (GL turbo and GL-10 turbo) Part Time 4wd 5-speed, dual range ('85, '86 RX sedans and some GL-10 sedans) Full Time 4wd 5-speed, single range with locking center diff (turbo XT, some GL-10s) Full Time 4wd 5-speed, dual range with locking center diff (RX) Remember, all of the turbo trannies have a 3.7 final drive. Most of the NA trannies have a 3.9 final drive but there are some weird ones with 3.7. Also, turbo trannies have a 25 spline axle stub so larger DOJs would need to be retrofitted onto your stock front axles, whereas the NA trannies don't (but again, there are some weird ones).
  4. Shawn, even though I haven't had one of these manual trannies apart, I'd be willing to lend a hand with it. I've rebuilt a few other manual transmissions, like VW 5-speeds and Chevys as well. I might be able to supply a Impreza AWD 5-speed but I don't know what the final drive ratio is....
  5. Do you have a test light? If you do, take the ignition and hook it back up, only way to figure it out. Then, connect one side of your test light to a known ground, like a bolt on the center console, and start testing which wires have power in different stages of the ignition (OFF, ACC, RUN, START). I wired in a pushbutton into my RX and it only gets power when the key is in the "START" position. I bet someone might have a FSM as well with a wiring diagram.
  6. Even though you didn't state it, its an automatic, probably a 3AT. My suggestion would be to check the adjustment of the shifter cable linkage down on the tranny. The shifter might be going into park, but that doesn't mean that the tranny itself is going into park. IIRC, the adjustment is on the passenger side but its been awhile since I looked at a 3AT. You can't miss it when you crawl under the car.
  7. I'd swap it out if you have a spare. Doesn't take more then a half hour to do it, just make sure you bleed it good. I would try and bleed the pump installed first before swapping, just to rule it out. Here's a quick way to bleed a power steering system... With vehicle off, pull powersteering cap and make sure fluid is proper color and at proper level. With the cap still off, start car and let it warm up to operating temp. After reaching desired temp and with the engine still running at idle, crank the wheels back and forth, holding them against the locks for about 2 seconds. Do this about 10-15 times. This will eliminate any air in the system. If it keeps making noise, then yes, replace the pump if you have a spare. After replacing it, make sure to bleed the system again.
  8. ok, for one, interior stuff from a WRX or an STi won't fit, period. You have to remember that there is an airbag on the passenger side so it would have to be removed, then, you'd have to find a spot to cut the dash down. Center console is going to be way to large for the car. Basically, by installing the interior from an STi or a WRX, you'll lose all extra, moveable room inside the cab, so imagine driving with your knees in your chest and not being able to turn around to look behind you. Also, good luck on finding an EA81T, which is what came in the turbo coupes and Brats in '83 and '84. If you want to do some fab work, you can put an EA82T and a 5-speed in it but that requires cutting and boxing the front frame rails to give enough clearance to the valvecovers or you'll have maybe 1/2" on either side on them. In my '78 Brat, before I decided to tear it down, I was running a FE 1600cc engine. It has a higher compression then the regular EA71 so it required better fuel then regular but with a Holley 5200 on there (Weber), and with it being rejetted, it had a ton of power. If you're looking for something that doesn't require tons of fab work to make it go pretty decent, you might want to look into getting an EA82T car, if it be a sedan, a wagon, or an RX. If you are up to doing all the tons of fab work and figuring out how to make it all fit/work together, then by all means, go for it. Don't let us try and tell you its not possible, because it is, its not going to be a very easy or cheap road by any means.
  9. I have my RX tranny in good shape and I would be willing to put it out and have it pulled apart to have a 4:11 stuffed into it... and maybe a NA low range as well;) I'll see if I can't dig up some other parts either!
  10. I've searched and searched but no luck. I know the EA81 A/C electric fan will go on but don't have any of those lying around. So, I remember Tin Soldier I believe, had a Napa part number for a second electric fan that fit in there. I, however, can't find it and have been searching for the past hour. Does anyone have it or can help me find it?
  11. his hood is his stock hood, with an aftermarket WRX hoodscoop look-a-like on it. KBD - I replaced one of my headlights on my RX awhile ago, with one that came off of a wagon or sedan. My grille didn't want to fit back onto it because the frame was different for the alignment screw for the headlight. So I had to put the frame and bracketry from my old headlight onto my new one to get it to fit my grille again.
  12. well I've already been broke for the past couple years because I've dumped a tome of money into my RX (roughly $7500!). I'm not big into wheeling anymore since I'm into speed. With my RX, granted there's still a few things I still want to do to it but, I have done basically what I first planned with the car. Built EA82 turbo, WRX TD04, intercooler, cams, cold air intake, custom piping, 5-lug conversion, larger brakes, and so on and so forth. But... its still a Subaru... Now if I were to dump any amount of money into a car, it would be my 1988 Camaro IROC-Z. Full police interceptor car but top of build sheet says "1 of 1". ONly one made with the police package and a t-top body. All police interceptor cars, even if they weren't used for patrol (civilian use), were hardtop. She'd be fully restored with a few minor engine mods but still relativily stock:brow:
  13. EA82 won't be a direct fit. Frame rails have to be modified for clearance of the valvecovers. an EA81 will fit though BUT the stock engine in the car (EA71) and the EA81 bellhousings are different. You will need to swap to an EA81 4wd transmission for it to work. Yes, the 4wd in these is awesome. Great for the snow and mild offroading since the stock tranny is only a single range 4wd.
  14. sounds like you might have too much fuel going to the cylinders. If you have fuel covering your plugs, then thats a goos sign that its rich, so rich to the point where it fouls the plugs and won't start. Have you tried to clean the plugs and put them back in?
  15. and if you plan on pulling the engine to do these various seals, belts and whatnot, also I would do the rear main seal and the oilpan gasket. Should only take a couple hours to pull it if its your first time, 45 minutes tops once you've gotten it down and doing it by yourself. since its an automatic, you don't have this issue but if it were a manual, this would also be a good time to check the clutch condition, and throwout bearing as well.
  16. I've done it a couple times with the fellers out west. I had a ball! Played in the snow, wheeled a bit, cut a couple trees and drove back. Was a great day!

  18. So yesterday evening, Laramie GM had a dinner deal up at a local mountain lodge (Snowy Mountain Lodge). Its about a 45 minute drive west of Laramie up in the Snowy Range. Anyways, about 30 minutes down the 2 lane highway (WY130), there's a little town called Centennial (yeah, every state has a town called that). On my way back home, I was cruising through this town, population 100, and just east of town is a fireman, training area I think, or an older abandoned shop. To the right of it, I saw a Chevy pickup I think but what really caught my eye, was a gen 1 stage 2 4wd wagon in that beercan silver color. Bet it has a blue interior too. Bet I could also score it for free! Bet I could go out there and drive it home! All I saw was the back hatch and the passenger side but it looked fairly clean as I drove past it at 40mph. Its fun spotting these at a glance. There's also another gen 1 stage 2 wagon just a few blocks from my house thats blue/blue, 4wd, and has some rust... If I find a way back out there, I'll get some pics and see if I can't figure out who owns it:brow:
  19. When I first got my '89 RX, I swapped the engines with a good 120k mile engine that I put all new gaskets in. It then sat in the car for like 8 months after I put it back together. Decided that I needed to time it before I fired it up and couldn't get it to turn over by hand. What a pain. So I did what these guys recommended with you. I poured some MMO down the cylinders and let it sit for about a week. Then I put the breaker bar back onto it and it broke free, literally. It felt like it was caught on something and with the amount of weight and strength I put on it, it felt like I broke the socket. Nope, broke the engine free though!
  20. You are talking about the bushing in the control arm, where it bolts to the crossmember right? Its is for the most part, a pressed fit, but however, with age and the years on it, it'll be stuck, bottom line. Easiest way to get it out, is to heat it up with the torch and pound the living crap out of it. I've replaced them by burning them out, which was a lot messier but required less work. You will have to do it off the car because of how stuck they tend to get. Better have a vise handy or an extra set of hands!
  21. Just a stupid question but it would have the same effect for overheating. Did you make sure to burp the cooling system in it as well?
  22. so this is a rebuilt engine or a swapped engine? Since it seems to overheat while driving, you might want to check the radiator for a slight clog, since you mention it doesn't get to the red.
