Is a TD05H 14B turbo to much
Caboobaroo replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
they're for a '83 Nissan 280ZX turbo IIRC... I'm going to be getting a set here in the next couple weeks, plus a AEM AFPR and a few other goodies for my RX:D -
length, mounting points, and the fact that both those control arms are totally different, even though they may not look it.

I think the most anyone here on this board has achieved with an EA82T, has been WJM. He has gotten roughly 230 crank hp out of one in his '87 RX coupe. I am currently working on getting more out of it, but I have tuning issues and some other things like that before I can take it to the awd dyno down in Colorado to see what I'm putting out.

if the hatchback has the OHV EA81 1800, then no they will not swap.

Clutch Cable Snapped... Yikes!
Caboobaroo replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had kinda the same thing happen to me in a GL-10 turbowagon. Instead of the clutch cable snapping, the clutch fork actually broke where it pivots on the tranny... that was a bad day... -
the speed wire for the GReddy turbo timer is used to show quarter miles times and some other fancy goodies like that but isn't nessesary. I have one in my RX and hooked everything else up and it works fine.

Need help. Trying to revive old subie.
Caboobaroo replied to OSUWrx's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
yeah it looks like a '79 DL wagon just like Paul said, the front "4WD" badge is different then the earlier style "4 Wheel Drive" badge. And yes, the DL in '78 came with the single round headlights, the quads were stock on the GL BUT you could order a DL with all the options a GL had. Everything from A/C to interior to the headlights... -

put me down for 2 instead of one... -
like what 75subie said. Doing a turbo swap into a gen 1 Brat is painstaking when it comes to wiring it all correctly and making it look good. Also the EA81T engines don't have a lot more horsepower compared to a NA EA81 with a SPFI setup on it. Not worth it IMHO. Currently, I am dropping a '81 EA81 solid lifter 1800 with a single range 4-speed EA81 tranny, into my '78 Brat. Just got a full gasket set today for the engine and I will be putting on a SPFI setup from an EA82 onto it for the luxury of the fuel injection and the ease of starting in my area. The engine and tranny are a direct bolt in BUT, since I am staying with RWD, I am locking the tranny into 4WD with the front axles removed and calling it good. I have thought about putting the stock 4WD selector from my Brat back onto the tranny to keep it looking stock but this car is going to be far from it. I have sourced a '81 GL 1800 Brat here in Wyoming but rust has gotten the best of it. In the same field with almost no rust, is a '80 DL 1600 Brat. I'm gonna go see if I can get them both and make one good one out of both of them. the GL has the jumpseats and a low rollbar and the DL has a low topper and a pushbar on the fornt of it;)

'78 Brat comin back
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
parts for the engine should be here today. Full gasket set, upper and lower radiator hoses, tune-up parts and a few other items:D -
How many of you have low mileage EA82T.
Caboobaroo replied to Gl-boost's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heh, my RX was hardly broken in when I got it, even though it was broke... 208,000 miles:D new engine has about 120,000 miles, tranny has about 190,000 miles -
ok here's a bit more info regarding the earlier style EA71s... The external water passage engines had68hp roughly, depending on the year. Also, the waterpump is totally different then the other EA71s. The passage runs under the intake manifold and bolts to the back of the waterpump, in the same area where the newer style EA71s have the coolant line that runs back to the heater hose. Also, the early EA71s have a plate which bolts to the back of the waterpump as well, except where the coolant passage bolts to. Next, is the top mount starter EA71. The waterpassage is now integrated into the intake manifold like the later side mounted EA71s and the EA81s but the case is still smaller then the later EA71s and EA81s. The waterpump is also the same waterpump as what is on the EA81s. The top mount EA71s with the EA81 waterpump was more of a JDM engine since the older style EA71 went right up to the bodystyle change (EA81). It was also a factory replacement as well. I've had both of these styles of EA71s and the top mount with the EA81 waterpump has quite a bit more power then the original EA71. Now I don't now much about the fatcase EA71 but I'll take a swing since I've seen one before. Has the same case as a EA81, same exhaust, intake, bellhousing, waterpump, but the bore is smaller then the EA81, thus giving it a 1.6 literage instead of the 1.8 literage. Thats a total guess but maybe I'm right?

another rare car found..
Caboobaroo replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's another rare car in a scrapyard in town. Its a '85 RX sedan, still has the LSD in the rear for now. I saw this car over a year ago, the same time I was lookin at buying my '89 RX from another yard. It sucks cause now it sits on a scrap pile with the drivetrain ripped outta it and the body is beat up now... -
Drove on rim for 26 miles.. problems??
Caboobaroo replied to kylecoyote's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
maybe some gravel up in the suspension. I don't foresee anything bad happenening for driving it that distance that slow... -

run stock boost during break in. It'll properly seat the rings like they should be IIRC. Then, once you get it broken in, my advise, since its a fresh rebuild, DON'T crank up the boost until you've gotten an intercooler, larger injectors, and a AFPR to give you more fuel. Ask Tex how much of a pain in the butt it has been for him and his RX......

Quick question. Will hydro lifter heads fit properly onto a solid lifter block without modification? The block I'm using is a solid lifter EA81 from a '81 2wd wagon and heads from a hydro lifter EA81 from a '85 Brat. I get my parts for my engine on Wednseday so then I get to tear into it and do a nice reseal before I drop this engine into my '78 Brat.

WCSS8 Mug Preliminary Poll
Caboobaroo replied to Subarutex's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
#4 there budy. I don't think I can make it to the show though so would shipping be an option as well? -
you're looking about 9-10psi without an intercooler but remember, even though you crank up the boost, means it'll run leaner then it does which means more engine fatigue. More of a risk of blowing your engine sooner.

another rare car found..
Caboobaroo replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if it has no pushbutton for the 4wd, then its going to be the 4EAT automatic, which they put in some '88s and more '89s. My'89 RX had one... until I swapped it with a manual RX tranny:D -
What a place to be stuck
Caboobaroo replied to Joey Joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok did you remove the steering column? Its much easier to replace the whole assmebly for the pedals, not just one pedal. SO go ahead and take out the steering column if you haven't already and it should be 6 nuts and it'll come off, if you have the throttle cable and the brake rod disconnected. -
2wd to 4wd on a coupe?
Caboobaroo replied to LUVMYBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If its an '85, it'll be a EA82, not an EA81. If its an '83, well, then its an EA81. Andrew has done a FWD to 4WD conversion under a EA81 sedan so you might wanna send him a PM and see what all it will take but my guess is: tranny clutch clutch cable driveshaft from a 4WD hacthback linkages center console -
WRX turboback exaust onto...a '79 wagon!!
Caboobaroo replied to MachineAgeVictim's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
well the WRX exhaust won't have anywhere near the same lines as the stock exhaust. If this was an EA81 bodystyle car or newer, they have simlialr lines to them. Like I said in the previous post, the exhaust actually runs through the body before going over the rear axle whereas the WRX just goes to the rear axle and then over. If/when you get it done, take lots of pics!
