  1. EA81 struts will fit, however, you'll have to make new mounting tabs on the strut housing in order for it to bolt up correctly to your knuckle. If you do end up converting your front end over to an EA81 setup like i have done in the past, you'll need to make some custom control arms which aren't hard for someone who has a metal lathe. All I had to do was make new stabilizer bars for the EA81 control arms since they were waaaaay too short. Since the original EA81 stabilizer bars were bolted on, I unbolted them and welded the new stabilizer bars on. I made the stabilizer bars the exact same length as the original EA71. For the rear, I don't have a clue:-p
  2. the board member who had made a set of adjustable cam pulleys was All-Talk. He was going to do them for $120 a set plus you had to send him a set of core pulleys as well. I was going to get a set but I never know what happened to them... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29308&highlight=adjustable+cam+pulley
  3. Ding ding ding... we have a winnAr! I did a write-up on a parts list and some tips on how the swap goes, depending on what parts you use. If you have any issues, just shoot me a PM and I can help ya through it:)
  4. Well the bulbs in the Honda cluster had the blue "condoms" over them so easy enough as to pop one in and pop the other one out.
  5. Leave it as it is. Backfire is very bad for your engine. This is an economical car, not a 400hp rally car. Rally cars have the backfire because of the turbo and a few other extras. Rally cars, unlike regular street cars, get rebuilt before and after every race, end of story. So unless you feel like going through engines like water in the desert, my advice is "If it ain't broken, don't F*** with it!"
  6. go Tex go! Mine seems to run all right but I still have a power issue. She moves when she's about 3k but under that, she's kinda doggy. I guess its time to get it tuned up since its been nice out:D
  7. I do know that when garner put the EA82T into his '79 Brat, he also upgraded his brake booster and brake master cylinder to an EA82 as well. Search around in his pics cause I know he has a couple quick shots of it installed.
  8. yup, I worked one onto my '89 RX. All I had to do was add in a fitting on top of the water passage right about where the stock turbo pipe would poke out to go to the turbo. I drilled a hole and with the aluminum being so thin, I used some JB Weld and make a nice seam all the way around the fitting. No leaks that I can tell.... yet:-\
  9. You could get a 4EAT as an option in the '90-'94 Loyales as well as the '88 and most '89 GL-10s or RXs if they didn't come manual. However, the 4EAT was an OPTION for these cars so you had to order it with the 4EAT. If you got a regular Loyale, you could get it with either the push button 5-speed or a 3AT.
  10. the easiest way to remove the pedal cluster is to unbolt the steering column which is two bolts right under the dash, a small bracket on the firewall, and one bolt at the U-joint inside the engine compartment. Then from what I can remember, there's 4 or 5 bolts that hold the bracket to the firewall but remember, the brake booster is also connected to the pedal assembly via studs running through the firewall which the pedal bracket bolts to. Make sure not to let it shift around too much because the weight of the brake booster will be supported by the brake lines underneath it.
  11. I got this DL gauge cluster from Tom's Brats the other day and when I got home, I noticed the speedo neeldle was bent. So I pulled it apart and I figured it was metal like the other two gauges (temp and fuel) so I wnt to bend it back and SNAP! A few not so friendly words later, I knew I could fix it. So I went into my garage where I had this late 80s Honda Accord cluster lying there. Bingo, a needle but it was white. Meh oh well. I had to modify the metal rod coming out of the gauge itself in order to fit it (I had some rubbing issues at about 70mph) and bam, it was all good. But it looked funny with 2 orange needles and one white one. So what did I do? Busted out the white out! About 10 minutes later, I had matching gauges. I actually like the white better, especially since I also put in some blue bulds instead of the stock white bulbs. Now I need to snap a few pics of it and show them and then get it hooked up:headbang:
  12. do a quick search of an auto -> manual swap. I did one in my '89 RX which had the 4EAT automatic in it. If yours has a 3AT, you'll need to swap the axles IF you get a turbo tranny which has the 25 spline axles. If you end up using a NA tranny which has a 23 spline axle which, if yors HAS a 3AT, then the axles won't have to be swapped.
  13. I know you can make a stock shifter into a shor throw, I have done it by moving the pivot point up on the shifter about 3/4". I also chopped my shifter as well to make it sit lower.
  14. not the ones you find floating around in the ocean. I need to find a source for a set of new door seals for the Brat, along with a new windshield gasket as well so I can install a windhield myself. Anyone know where I can get these select, hard to find items? I found my original door seals today and was going to put them in BUT my driver side was torn up in a spot. Bah...
  15. LOL I was just givin ya guys crap. I've been on here long enough that it doesn't faze me unless it goes off on some tangent about something not having to do with the same car that the post was about:D Anyways, yeah, I'll be posting pics up every few weeks on it. I got the engine sitting in my garage right now and I will be starting to get some work done it here before too long. I think I'm going to go with a stock Hitachi for the time being until I can get a Weber and adapter again. Oh, and you can't forget about my custom exhaust either. Granted, it'll be a little different with different components but it'll still have that nice boxer sound;)
  16. well now that people decided to hijack my thread, I decided it was time to do a quick update;) Here's the plans for the drivetrain of the car... solid lifter EA81 with about 100,000 miles on it, needs a reseal single range 4wd 4-speed from a '83 DL wagon stock driveshaft and stock 3.90 rear diff The tranny will be locked into 4wd the whole time. Also, since I'm going RWD, the front axles won't be there for clearance issues with the steering column. Also be adding a Weber and a few other slight upgrades to the engine, and of course, it will be the Ford dark blue I've always gone with in this car. Body will consist of my shaved front fenders, shaved doors of the locks, handles, trim and mirrors. Also, the side markers in the back are getting shaved, the front valence which is totally straight thanks to a couple hours and a bodyhammer/dolly, is also getting the front holes for the bumper filled in, the rear is getting a custom roll pan made by yours truely, plus the drip rails on the sides will be getting shaved. I also scored a few extra parts from Tom's Brats like the bracket to bolt the bed carpet to the back of the bed, right next to the tailgate. Also got the tailgate seals as well. The engine compartment is getting everything removed off of the inner fenders and firewall that won't be needed like the jack bracket, battery tray and a few things like that. Battery will be relocated to the bed in a custom battery box that will also incorperate a box for some subs, since I am cutting the back of the cab a certain way. I'm installing a custom tinted lexan slider in the back. I do have a sunroff I plan on putting into it from an EA81 car but that will be later on. Suspension will be stock in the rear, possibly a slight tub into the bed to accomidate larger tires, front will be my custom EA81 setup with the vented rotors. I think I have decided that the car is getting painted silver with black and red targa stripes. I'll have to see what it will look like before i do it but I think that would look the best. What do you guys think, eh?
  17. you want to use the SEARCH function this lovely board has. You'll be able to get it answered.
  18. yeah splines are the same but the EA81 axles are about 3/4" longer but they work in a gen 1 vehicle.
  19. hmm yes, good idea to measure it. Didn't think of that. I do have the engine/tranny in the parts car so I can go measure it today:banana:
  20. So I really need this question answered before I start putting the drivetrain into this car. If I used an EA81 solid lifter engine, and a EA81 single range 4-speed, will the stock '78 Brat driveshaft work without being modified? If noone knows, I guess it'll be time to see what I have to do:rolleyes:
  21. really? I might be hitting you up for those here before too long. Just gotta get some parts shipped out to you first:-p
  22. I just got home from Tom's Brats house. What an awesome guy. I helped him strip this parts '79 Brat of what it was worth. Body was pretty far gone due to someone not knowing how to do bodywork (rust where the bondo used to be). This guy even had lists or parts people were looking for such as TwoWagons and cricket. He'll probably be sending you two a couple PM's if he hasn't already. The list of parts I got isn't too long but its things I've been needing. I got me a tailgate (sorry TwoWagons, not the best shape and we decided he could find one better for you), some blue carpet which I'm either going to dye black or use as a template to make some new carpet, wiring harness for the engine compartment, the trim piece that screws to the back of the bed to hold in the bed carpet, a few little odds'n'ends, and a instrument cluster. I'll probably be looking for more parts such as a windshield (kinda broke the one in the parts car:eek: ), and a set of tailights as well in nice shape if I don't decide to try to retrofit a set of gen 2 lights into it. Hopefully tomorrow, I can start on more of the body and get it closer to paint. I can't wait... he he he:banana:
  23. well even if it wsa the original pump, it wouldn't make a differemce really. I've always had the stock pumps in my gen 1's and they worked great. Yes, please do remove the air cleaner so we can get a better look at that carb
  24. Thank you Skip. I was actually planning on doing this to my '78 Brat since I am currently putting it back together. I have the same sort of habit of my own where I forget to turn the lights off (my sister's poor Del Sol)
