  1. well maybe if you're in a turn but on dry pavement, shifting from High to Low is perfectly fine that I know of. Done it lots of times and never had any issues...
  2. well myself, I've never been a big fan of wedge looking cars but I do have a '76 Triumph TR-7, bleh. I like the bodystyle of the RX better then the XT personally. As far as keeping one if them, look at what swapping of parts you'd have to do to the XT that the RX already has. As far as wheelbase, they're the same but nose vs. nose comparison or trunk vs. hatch comparison is different. XT by far has a longer nose on it which makes it a little heavier on the front I think but the RX doesn't have the areodynamics of the XT wedge design. So basically you're looking at either doing some bodywork on the RX and dropping a new engine in it or swapping the swaybars, rear diff plus other things you would want from the RX plus the installing of the new engine. Basically it comes down to, more work or less work?
  3. stupid RX springs... What kind of a clunk is it? Usually if its suspension related, you can feel it in the steering wheel but if its motor/tranny related, you can feel it through the floor. Also, take a passenger on a trip in it and see if they can help pinpoint which side its coming from and thenget under there and start shaking the bejeezus outta it. If anything, jack it up and go poking around with a prybar. Might also want to try the brake calipers to see if one might be slightly freezing on you.
  4. oh you'll be back, trust me. Especially when you see LUVMYBRAT's '84 Brat which I'll be pimpin on down to the meet.... MWAHAHAHA!
  5. Well I would but I don't have any currently and the 4-speed was already pulled and ready to go in. Bill and I will probably install the 5-speed later on down the line but for right now, the 4-speed is the cheapest and easiest way to go since I just have to swap trannys. Ravenes - I'll be down in Denver on the 15th for the meet we're having. If anything I might be able to come down and help if you still need it.
  6. Maybe I should move? Would put me closer to actual civilization then this dead state. It would also put me closer to other people as well;)
  7. so I looked at the calender and it seems the 22nd or March might be the best day to do it, even though its right before my payday. How does that sound with everyone else?
  8. LUVMYBRAT has been so kind to let me borrow his cherry Brat although, the body is in wonderful shape, it has a few drivetrain and suspension issues. Also, a year ago, we ended up swapping the 160k mile Brat engine (hydro lifter EA81) for a 90k mile '81 wagon engine (solid lifter EA81). Wow, this engine is a gutless wonder! So I'm going to be swapping the original EA81 back into it but I also have to swap the tranny as well. The tranny thats in it has some funky issues. First off, it feels like the shifter bushings are totally SHOT but when I pulled the shifter boot back this evening, I moved the shifter around in gear and granted, there was a little shifter play, there seems to be a lot of play coming from the transmission. So I'm going to be swapping in another 4-speed d/r 4wd tranny in there while putting in new bushings as well. Next off, the front end has a few noises coming from it like the castle nut on the driver side front axle isn't tight. I also crawled under it on the driver side and noticed that the cotter pin for the balljoint is missing, luckily I have a whole box of assorted cotter pins. So when I pull the tranny to replace it, I'm also going to be pulling the engine and dropping the original back in, while at the same time (or right after I get the engine/tranny in) I'm going to be running through the front end to make sure everythin is tight and in place. With that said and done, it'll be onto the rear disc conversion if I have all the parts to do it, and then bleeding the brakes. I have missed working on something this easy, compared to my RX. I loved my Brat and it was so easy to work on, 3 engine swaps in a week and thats when time permitted it plus a few other small mods I did to it. I'm back to the land of carburators!
  9. well I gotta come up with a day first. Looking about the middle of March so it can warm up a bit more. I'm going to figure out a day and I'll post it back here in a few hours
  10. SHEESH! You whine waaaaay too much. Just kidding. As far as power, I would recommend an EA82T and drop it in there since they're so plentiful and since some of us have been able to put different performance parts in one. Right now, I'm driving an '84 Brat with a solid lifter EA81.... talk about GUTLESS!!! I'm gonna drop the original hydro lifter motor back into it on Wednseday along with a better 4-speed. Oh you wouldn't happen to have a spare EA81 4-speed shifter would ya? I need one for LUVMYBRAT's cherry red Brat since his is kinda bent.
  11. ok so they just changed my schedule but lucky me, I got the same days off as I have been (Wed, Thurs) so its all good there!
  12. Sorry the Innovate LM-1. My mind is going to other places right now such as my dead RX....
  13. what about a loose carb? I've had a few carbs that were loose at the baseplate and it would run until you moved it back and forth, then it would sputter and try to die.
  14. WOW. Thanks for the info Kevin! A friend of mine back in Oregon was telling me about what kind of tuning I should do on the RX since he's gone through the whole "Blow up one engine with XXpsi and throw another one in and see if we can't get it right" He built a stock VW 1.7 liter engine with a Saab turbo and an intercooler and yes, he's gone through a few engines. He was explaining to me what I should do as far as tuning issues and what kind of numbers to be watching for as far as the wideband and stuff like that. As far as numbers, where would a good looking AFR be for our engines with 10psi coming from the turbo? Then, what would be considered running lean? rich? I'm going to be getting a AEM LM-1 here before too long because once the RX is running, I'm going to tune it no matter what. I don't want to grenade an engine or something stupid like that, wanna do it right. So with that said, I'm now thinking of going with a RRFPR and some larger injectors like from a Nissan since GravityMan has done a bunch of research on them. With those items, plus a better fuel pump, think I would have very many problems with pushing my injectors to the limits and running lean at 12psi or more? Next, what fuel pressure do you recommend running as well?
  15. well my days off are during the week (wednseday and thursday) but I MIGHT be able to get a weekend day off like a Sunday, just gotta ask. I still have to ask for the Sunday of the meet off but I don't see it being a problem since we have more techs at work then I can shake a stick at.
  16. So I'm really gettin into a spot where I need to get the RX running again. I'm getting so frusterated with this EA82T and the spyder intake stuff that its making my head spin. Looking for people in the area to help in an afternoon or so, granted it'll probably be during the week. I just need some knowledge besides myself since I don't have very much on EA82s.... maybe this is why I like my EA71;) So I'm thinkin sometime during either Febuary or March so it can warm back up a little more. What does everyone think?
  17. So since there's a few people here running aftermarket fuel pump and FPR, just wondering what kind of performance this has given and what kind of tuneability it has given as well? I know Tex has custom equal length fuel rails and other pieces but nothin has come up on what kind of brand will fit and what has been done. Also, wanting to know the tuneability to see what you can do to give more of an advantage over stock parts.
  18. ok sounds good. Just let me know what happens so I can give directions to where its sitting at.
  19. dammit! why now? I'm in the middle of a deal right now and so I'm broke! If they can hold onto it for a month or so, I might be able to pick it up....
  20. sweet man! Lookin good. Glad another person has come to the 5-lug side instead of trying to deal this this stupid 4-lug crap;) Did you use all XT6 stuff or did you go with Impreza stuff as well? If you did use Impreza stuff, welcome to the wonderful world of brake upgrades!
  21. If you want an aftermarket recirc hose, PM me. I got a Samco in blue that I don't need and I'm willing to sell it off pretty cheap. Yes 30 bucks is a good deal. I paid 115 shipped without the BOV, one part of the y-pipe was missing and I also got the hoodscoop.
  22. that and turbo engines kinda suck for wheelin. Not a lot of bottom end torque when the turbo isn't spooling due to lower compression
  23. isn't sounding like a headgasket to me. Sounds more like the car isn't cooling very well ie plugged radiator or a plugged heater core. I would recommend a coolant flush to help determine if it in fact a headgasket or just a plugged radiator.
