I think I got everyone beat! Rebuilding an RX that had a hard life before it went into the junkyard. I've touched at least every bolt on that car. Everything from the 5-lug swap with broked boots on the old front axles to pulling the old engine out, tearing it down and finding out it had two blown headgaskets and two cracked heads. Oh and swapping the automatic outta it for the manual. The auto was pretty dirty. You probably think this is a bunch of different jobs but to me, its all one since its a full on rebuild of the car;) Hasn't run for over a year now, since I pulled it into the garage under its own power...

OKAY!!! Anyone with snow want to host?
Caboobaroo replied to Baysurfin's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
dude, come to Wyoming. We've got enough to go around and plus, we've got the Rockies just west of us too. Plenty of snow for everyone and their brother to have... I'm gettin so sick of it but I also have to ride my bike to work, ugh! -
Head GAsket done now this?
Caboobaroo replied to Joey Joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On my RX before I pulled the engine, I had oil leaking from around my turbo as well but it was hard to pinpoint since the turbo was in the way. Turned out the return hose for the oil going into the head was cracked and leaked oil all over the header causing it to smoke. -
Damn, looks like I'm going to be having to babysit my RX for about 5-10 minutes in the winter since it gets sub 10* in Laramie. I'm also planning on hooking my AAV back up in my RX but it doesn't fit in the stock location on the spyder intake. I'm going to be mounting it to the passenger side strut tower but it'll be out of the way. Let me know how it comes out Jay.

Co: Meet In January!!!
Caboobaroo replied to The Korean's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Well right now, I'm in Oregon visiting my family for Christmas so it wouldn't be possible for me to work on it. Maybe when I get back on the 2nd, everyone can come on up and help if you'd like. I'll even pitch in some beer for the trouble;) -
Well you might be surprised since my '78 Brat is getting resurected as soon as maximumBRAT's turbo Legacy is done and outta her shop. Then we're gonna be dropping either her old EA81 from her '81 Brat into there or I might snag one of my EA71's from my parent's house and drop a set of dual carbs I got layin around on there. If I'm really lucky, maybe I can get the old high compression GF motor back from XSNRG;) Yeah bring her on down, we'll lower her and give her a nice note comin from the back, and plenty of power to go around!

Front diff interchangeability: The true answer
Caboobaroo replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Are the internals the same from auto to manual or are they different as far as the center diff is concerned? If possible, what about swapping the internals from the manual center diff into the housing of the automatic, then connecting it with the manual tranny and running gear oil through it? Just doing some theoretical research since I myself have never had any of these trannys apart yet. -

so an older Legacy VLSDCD might work? I heard that in the automatics, the AWD was engaged by a solenoid on the tranny. What if you were able to use the center diff from the automatic, hook the solenoid up to a potentiometer and turn it into like a DCCD? Possible? -
so when are we gonna have a "Lets get Caboobaroo's RX running" party? Do I have to drag it down there to get some work done on it or will people be willing to come up here? Anyways, drive that beast up here and help me. Afterwards, we'll hit up some awesome trails and some big friggin rocks to go play on. Great place to get some pics of articulation:D

Front diff interchangeability: The true answer

Next I wanna see what it might take to mount a center diff from an EJxx series car into our EAxx series cars. Can it even be close to possible? -

hmm I might snag up a couple of these since I can use them or have a couple spares. The one in the bottomr left (the square one with the large hole) is for the throttle body on the spyder, not sure about the non spyder intakes which I'll take since I need one, the two just to the right of the O-ring on the right side and the two on the bottom right, next to the brown EGR gasket. Whatcha lookin to get for em? -

well I don't have very many people willing to help me on it on a regular basis so its just me at the moment. Laura's come up a couple times and helped with it and Andrew... well he's come over a few times, maybe helped once or twice. -

very nice Will. I think I have another FT4wd RX tranny somewhere that I could swap an LSD into for it -

Hmm well I was kinda thinkin about towing it down there for the meet and bringing all of my parts that I wanna get rid of etc. Mabye have a work party or something since the only one who has come up fom Colorado to help me on it is my own girlfriend. As of right now, its just reclocking the throttlebody on the upper portion of the intake and then dropping it on, plumbing the IC in and a few other little things... Maybe, just maybe.... -
LOL I didn't know I had a Suzuki either. Good thing I traded it for my Brat over a year ago.

changing tranny/LSD gear oil
Caboobaroo replied to avatar382's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, IIRC, the drain plug on the tranny is a 20mm but I'm not quite for certain. I can run out and look later today if you'd like since mine is up on jacks right now. -
I'd be happy for a 3.90 front diff, a VLSD 3.90 for my rear and a Forester 5th gear. But hey, if you can do the 4.44 front and a Forester 5th gear, I'd be one happy camper in my RX;)

what do you like about your suby?
Caboobaroo replied to Buddy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the fact that it gets AWESOME gas mileage... well since it don't run, don't gotta put any gas in it, plus I don't have to pay for insurace. Well the main reason is cause the parts are 10X less expensive then my Camaro, PLUS I've done a lot of parts swapping and figuring out what parts I can use to make performance parts for it. Gotta love the Subaru man! -
I know Hondasucks did it on an '82 sedan and it worked fine, just had to make a couple mods to the body since they don't have a certain nut that's needed to bolt it to the body. He just drilled through the body and put an actual nut on it but I bet you could weld a nut to a metal coupon and then weld to the body. Would make it a lot stronger I would think.
