EA82T won't budge by hand... FIXED!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I'll get the rest of the parts for my spyder intake tomorrow hopefully and then its a matter of bolting it on, plumbing in the IC, finish up the small bits on the TD04, make a couple gaskets and hopefully I can get her to run:D -
lowering a gen 1
Caboobaroo replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
well I lowered my '79 by reclocking the torsion bars in the rear, and I also cut 3 coils from the front springs which still gave it a decent ride in it. The Brat on the other hand went with cranking the torsions down all the way, and removing the front springs totally and the front bumpstops. Rough ride but some of the looks I got with it were priceless... -
EA82T won't budge by hand... FIXED!
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well a couple nights ago, I poured some MMO into the cylinders since it was the only thin oil that I had. Wel tonight, maximumBRAT and her friend Mike stopped by while they were in town and I put the breakerbar on it to show them it wouldn't move and guess what it did.... it turned over:slobber: So now I can continue with the project but now I'll have the Camaro to drive while I work instead of riding my bike to work at 13* outside -

yes thats right. The crank pulley bolt just tightens/loosens but no movement from the crank. Ok so here's what I did... I recieved the engine from Stan in Casper (stngllhm) on the board. He had it out of his wagon for about 2 months before I got it and all it had was a bad intake gasket which I later discovered since the headgaskets in it weren't bad. When I got it a couple months after he pulled it, it turned over but since I suspected a bad headgasket, I pulled the heads, I DID NOT tough the shortblock in ANYWAY, SHAPE or FORM. I put in brand new OEM headgaskets and a set of gen 2 turbo heads I bought since I didn't want to risk cracking the gen 1 turbo heads that were on it. When I got the engine assembled, it turned over fine with no problems. I installed it in the car, still turning over fine. It turned over until I went to Steamboat Springs, CO for a couple months. During this time, the car sat, still never been started. I came back for a weekend while I was still working down there and worked on it some more at which time, it still turned over (Sept. 23rd, 2005). When I got back for good on Oct. 10th, I didn't have a lot of time to work on the engine since I was doing more wiring for electronics in it and other small things like that. Since then, I have gotten a spyder intake which I am going to install which was a couple weeks ago but I'm still awaiting on some parts. I decided about a week ago to reset the timing belts to make sure I had them on correctly since this is my first EA82 that I have done by myself, gotta double check everything. At this time, I found out, she doesn't want to turn over. So I'm thinking it might be because the compression is fighting against itself. I pulled att 4 sparkplugs since there's no intake on it. Still not wanting to turn over. I then pulled both timing belts thinking it might be a cam or something in the heads. Well still nothing and both cams turn just fine. I know I haven't dropped anything into the bellhousing since I have had the timing cover on it so I wouldn't do that. I thought it might have been the stage 2 clutch possibly sticking so I had Andrew push in on it while I tried to turn. Still nothing. I realized if it was the clutch, the car would still rock back and forth while I turned the breaker bar. So I know it has to be in the shortblock since I have elimiated every other possibility. So, I still need to get some diesel to try and free the rings. Hopefully that'll work, if not, I got a big air compressor... -

ok I'll first try the diesel trick and hopefully that'll work. This motor, I replaced both headgaskets for pure comfort and both heads are new to the engine as well. I know I already can do the stage 1 and stage 1 part but stage 3 I know will work but it'll require that fance grease fitting piece to make it work... I'll let you know what becomes of it. -
Pillar guages for EA82 cars?
Caboobaroo replied to Tin Soldier's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got a 3 gauge a-pillar pod installed in my RX which came from an '02 WRX. With some slight modding to the base and the top of it, it fit perfectly and looks like it was made by Autometer to fit the car. Here's a pic of it without any gauges in it. http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/389939708mtzKpQ -

the valve train turns over fine, I was turning last night when I put some MMO into the cylinders. The engine won't turn over either way. All I end up doing it either tightening the crank pulley, or loosening it. so I KNOW its something in the bottom end. -

well I might as well pull it out for a little while and get it unstuck, prime the oilpump up and whatnot, then drop it back in -
TD04, how do you mount it in an ea82?
Caboobaroo replied to ausubaru92's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
on mine, I have the outlet facing the engine but I'm also making some custom plumbing with the help of a Samco y-pipe. I'm also running a WRX TMIC as well so it was kinda a must but its all in what you wanna do. I had to cut the y-pipe so it makes a 90* right off of the turbo, add in an extra length of aluminum tubing and then it connects into the rest of the y-pipe and into the IC. Sounds a lot harder then it really is. -
with stock Impreza springs, I sit about where I did with the stock RX springs BUT now I have a lot of options for different springs, struts, brake upgrade and the whole shibang for the front.

well when I tore it down, I cleaned the cylinder walls and whatnot but I made sure to make them nice and clean before I put the heads on it. Last time it ran was about 8 months ago or so. I've got some PB Blaster in the garage and I'll spray some of that in there. Also, this wasa good running engine before I tore it down. No funny noises, no nothing, just a blown intake gasket. So I don't think its a bearing or a bent rod (one of my coworkers suggested that). -
EA82 & EA82T Head Gaskets...
Caboobaroo replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and Brian, I know Will said he can get EA82T headgaskets all day long for 25 bucks a pop IIRC... -
I have come to realize my EA82T WON'T mvoe at all, almost like its froze. Here's the history of the engine... came from an '85 RX which was put into an '87 GL-10 wagon, then removed due to blown intake gaskets where I stripped it down to the shortblock, put new OEM headgaskets on in, gen 2 turbo heads and stock cams. I have yet to fire this engine up though I have gotten it to turn over a few times prior to this. All modifications made to the RX are outside the engine, the engine is all stock. I pulled all the plugs, still nothing. Pulled the timing belts, still nothing. Yes the car is in neutral and its not the stage 2 clutch (Andrew stepped on it while I tried to turn). Nothing has been dropped into the bellhousing of the engine. I am at a complete loss. Is is because there might not be any oil or enough for it to rotate smoothly? I put all my weight on my 1/2" breaker bar. I know its not hydrolocked because I haven't had any antifreeze in the cooling system since I tore the car down like a million years ago. I'm about to drop my spyder on and plumb the IC in, then its finish the plumbing on the turbo and set the timing... then its VROOM! What could it be??? I guess this car must hate me. If its not one thing, its another.

bodhi, if you're ever in the Laramie area, I can give you my number and you can come voer and take a look at the RX which has a full 5-lug done to it. As far as that USRM, thats the old version of it from the original board so it doesn't have any of the newer stuff. Here's a list of people who have done a 5-lug conversion that I can think of off the top of my head... Dr. RX Me (Caboobaroo) Hondasucks (I helped him with his) Calebz SubaruTex MilesFox subaru_styles yes there are probably more people who did it but I cannot remember who all has done it. If you need a parts list and some tips/technics, just send me a PM and I can help you with as much as I can. Also, if you need parts, I know where there's a whole XT6 that can be used for the conversion.

TD04, how do you mount it in an ea82?
Caboobaroo replied to ausubaru92's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
well I know a couple other people will pipe in here I hope but I've done the swap, but currently not running, yet. Yes like you said, the rear stud on the stock EA82T header needs to be moved back about 3/8". I used a Megan Racing downpipe for a WRX on mine as well but I need to make a custom hanger for under the car (hits my driveshaft). As for the compressor housing being turned, I don't think its possible since the wastegate actuator is connected to the housing itself. The stock oil line coming into the top of the turbo is the same so it bolts right into the TD04 but you'll have to get some hose that is petrolium product resistant for the oil return coming out of the bottom of the turbo but thats just some rubber hose basically. Also, you'll need some small radiator hose for the inlet and outlet of the antifreeze into the turbo as well. Other then that, I'd recommend running an intercooler as well with it since it is able to create more boost and flow better then the stock VF7. If you go to http://community.webshots.com/user/caboobaroo and go to my RX folder, you'll see pics of the install and whatnot that I have done so far. -
ok ok ok, well besides searching for it, there's should be talk of the people who have done it like myself which can answer any questions through PMing. As far as the USRM, I cannot access it for some reason, probably a software upgrade or something. If you need questions answered, or parts that will work, let me know, I can help.

well with ARP's, would the copper headgaskets work better or would the still leak, and require more re-torquing then I'd like to do. If we want to see how many people would want to buy a set of Cometic MML, I know I would be in line since I paid 75 bucks for a set of OEM headgaskets... I don't see why another 15 bucks would make a difference in my bank account.

<-- $600 bucks.... but I also have Impreza front suspension/brakes/axles

*starts making a list of more mods he needs to do to the RX* Actually, this is on my list of stuff To-Do already but I'm glad you covered it since I was gonna ask you anyways:D -
I'm actually going to build a hard tonneau cover out of some angle stock and some sheetmetal for my Brat. Not going to be the easiest with the way the back of the cab and the front of the bed are shaped but I can do it.

FE fact or bullshyte?
Caboobaroo replied to the sucker king's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I had one in my '78 Brat and lemme tell you, holy crap! I could roast the rear tires in 2nd gear and it would kick it sideways if I dropped it from 3rd to 2nd. I also had a Holley 5200 on it and an electronic disty as well. Coupled with some aftermarket exhaust it was a fast little car! -
Lets see.... '79 4wd wagon - August 2003 '78 Brat - June 2004 And I still have both!

damn that sucks. Tell him I wish him the best of luck with the surgery! -
woohoo, sounds like there'd be a lot of people coming to see it. As for a date, it might be in the middle of the week since I have Wednsedays and Thursdays off. It all depends though. If anything, it might have to be after I get home from going to see my parents for Christmas. She might not look pretty, but she'll be running....
